This was a frustrating game to watch and to be honest, a hard post game to write because you can start talking about this game with a number of starting points of how the Knicks played tonight and unfortunately lost the game.

The Knicks had a few opportunities to put Dallas away and could not from the opening tip till mid way through the third quarter. But give the Mavericks credit for hanging around time and time again and when Carter, Mayo and Jae Crowder got hot, that’s when Dallas took the lead and built it to the point where in the end the Knicks could not make the full comeback.

Carmelo Anthony started out struggling and yet kept battling and had the ball in his hands with a chance to win it, which is something that not too many Knicks fans will complain about. Sure he lost the ball as he was going up and could have driven the ball to the rim against Marion, but it didn’t happen and the play didn’t work. But the referee’s tonight seemed to be another defender on Melo in the fourth quarter. He was called for a very suspect offensive foul that would have been a chance at a three point play and Chris Kaman, after a block literally punched Melo in the face. As Tommy Dee was saying on twitter, the Knicks have got to battle when it seems like calls are going against them and they did, but you wonder if the lack of calls got in Melo’s head when he decided not to drive and instead pull up for a jumper.

Kidd and Chandler came back to Dallas and put on a show against their former team. Kidd filled up the stat sheet and Chandler played brilliantly in the fourth quarter as his three point plays helped the Knicks nearly pull off the comeback. Kidd has been very good for the Knicks this season and certainly played motivated tonight and Chandler had his best game of the season. We can all wonder why the Knicks didn’t use Melo as a decoy and run a Felton to Chandler pick and roll one more time for the win since it had worked so well throughout the comeback attempt.

O.J. Mayo is finally realizing his potential and has had a very good opening to his first season in Dallas and so you can understand how he can have a good game against the Knicks. But Vince Carter? Vince….Carter? Really? I half expected him to throw on a #15 Raptors jersey and start dunking at will considering how he was playing tonight. He really helped the Mavericks get back into the game and then keep the lead when the Knicks made their run. The Dallas starters were a combined -27 while the bench was a combined +42.

J.R. Smith had his worst game of the season and after nine extremely positive games from J.R., you had to expect that a bad game was gonna happen eventually. He was 5-13 for only 14 points and was a team worst -19 tonight. The Carter three that made it 108-101 was a big shot and it was Smith that lost him on defense and allowed that to happen.

This certainly was a tough game for the Knicks to lose considering that they had chances to put the Mavericks away a few times but again, give this team credit for battling back after the Mavericks looked like they would run away with the game and having a chance to win it at the end. The next game for the Knicks and us fans can’t happen soon enough.

Coming up next, the Knicks will have a reunion with Jeremy Lin and Toney Douglas as they take on the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center, Friday Night at 8:00 PM. The game will be on MSG.
