Quote: Woodson on Sunday night’s win over the Mavericks

“I think our defense set the tone early. They got off to such a good start and then, once our defense settled in, we became a really good basketball team and that carried us through.”

-Mike Woodson, after Sunday night’s win against the Dallas Mavericks

Yes! Yes! Yes! Let's go Islanders. Now maybe the team can exhaled, relax and beat Pittsburgh tomorrow.

Ottawa can still get in, and if so, they would be a very tough out

@William Thorpe Ottawa is in the 7 spot right now, and looks to have a pretty good chance of getting in.  They control their own destiny.

Those 2 pts you get in November count as much as the 2 you get in April, the Isles gave themselves a nice cushion with a very good first half and were able to get in tonight without winning a game, so be it. Now they need to get their act together by next week.

Wings clinched a spot tonight 24 years in a row for them, unreal.

exactly.  everyone trying to discredit the isles for "backing in" is ridiculous.  they hit a specific # of points that couldn't be reached by the teams on the outside.  as poorly as they have played of late, they earned that spot just like everyone else.....

FU smurfs I'm glad you lost 3 zip!

Hey, the Isles just backed into the playoffs.  Hooray!  Now, how about staying out of the wild card, or maybe even win the last 2 and have a shot at home ice?  Nah, way too much to ask.

@Mike T. Why don;'t you just give up Mike?  Seriously.  You have taken over the crown of the most negative fan on IPB.

Don't start rooting again if things turn around.

Mike, what happened to you? You posted sensible things, now its all downer, negative stuff. Come back to us, step away from the dark side.

3-1 Florida.  Unless Florida pulls off an Isles like collapse, we could back in tonight after all.

@buddyryan Wish I could get that game on tv.  MSNBC is showing Hawks.

I think the Isles should rest some more guys.  They clinched the playoffs about a month ago, right?

Don22

So, assuming the Senators hold on and Boston and Detroit win, will all the people that bellowed that the Rangers had X games at hand on the Islanders now bellow that the Isles have a game at hand on the Sens, Boston and Detroit?  Not to mention that the other fact that even if those 3 teams win, the Isles STILL have more points than 2 of the 3?

I get the panic, but the Isles have more going for them than any of the teams below them.

Let's win tomorrow and continue the downward spiral of Pittsburgh.  Kill 2 birds with one stone - literally.

Cheers.

Go Isles!

Mike T.
Mike T.

@jpizzy They technically only have to get a game to overtime, but nothing suggests they will be able to do that either.

Don22
Don22

@Mike T. @jpizzy Maybe so - but there are at least 2 teams that are in more dire straits than the Isles.  Pens aren't playing any better - maybe even worse and the Sens still need to win 2 AND get help.

We are all so focused on the Isles blowing things instead of focusing on the fact that other teams are in worse position and not playing well either.

jpizzy
jpizzy

Good point. Isles vs desperate pens team and then vs jackets who have beaten everyone over the last month. Anyone confident? Wish I was.

Don22
Don22

@jpizzy But why are the Pens more desperate than the Isles?

I am confident in a win tomorrow night.  The Isles play well against the Pens and their heads are spinning.

Mike T.
Mike T.

@jpizzy The only way the Isles are making the playoffs is if they back in.  That's been pretty obvious for some time now.

jpizzy
jpizzy

Bottom line is isles may be forced to win one of their remaining two games and wins have been very elusive for this team for a long time now.

Mike T.
Mike T.

@chrisredux @Don22 @jpizzy Because, Brian Strait will be in the lineup, and he's so good, the Isles could not possibly lose.

Unless the Isles get helped out by Florida tonight and back in, I have almost no doubt that they will be playing for their playoff lives on Saturday night, and in a fitting end to the whole Coliseum fiasco, will probably lose in regulation, probably on some ridiculous goal or call.  It's starting to appear as though that's just the way it was meant to be.  Hopefully, if that happens, it results in a complete overhaul of the entire coaching staff.

jpizzy
jpizzy

Pens shouldn't be more desperate than isles but isles should've locked up a spot weeks ago and haven't so...

Don22
Don22

@chrisredux @Don22 @jpizzy So are the Pens.  What makes you think they can beat the Isles?

If not for a fluky goal nobody would be saying boo.  The Isles made a furious comeback.  I am sure you were one of us sitting on your couch yelling when Lee tied it up. Were they not good enough at that moment?  We all were and we were all saying how awesome of a comeback it was and how great it is to clinch.  Don't let a fluky goal make you think they aren't going to clinch.

There is more pressure on the Sens and Bruins, who both need to win out AND get help for the Isles not to clinch.

Don22
Don22

@jpizzy So should the Pens.  In fact, you could say the Pens were in better shape than the Isles.  The Pens and Isles wer flip-flopping position most of the season.

Mike T.
Mike T.

@Don22 @chrisredux @jpizzy Of course people would be saying "boo", the Isles have played like crap now for over a month.  That wouldn't have changed based upon a successful comeback on Tuesday.  But the Panthers have a 2-1 lead right now, so the Isles could possibly back in after all.

Mike T.
Mike T.

@Don22 @jpizzy So because the Pens have been playing just as crappy as us lately, we should be confident that the Isles are going to go into Pittsburgh and beat them with the playoffs on the line?

Don22
Don22

@Mike T. @Don22 @jpizzy Why not?  Let's look at the last game.  The Isles showed heart and came back from a 4 -1 deficit. Again, a fluke goal makes this conversation a reality.  The Pens on the other hand BLEW a 3 goal lead.  The best thing to happen to them that last game was that Ottawa ran out of time and they were able to save a point.

You are a good contributor her on IPB, but you are also one of the most negative.  You want to write them off - fine.  But then write them off for good.  No coming back in when they clinch.

Don22
Don22

@Mike T. @Don22 @chrisredux @jpizzy  The discussion at hand is the Isles clinching.  If not for a fluky goal, we aren't going back and forth.  The fact that they haven't played well is a different story.
