Quote: Woodson on Sunday night’s win over the Mavericks

“I think our defense set the tone early. They got off to such a good start and then, once our defense settled in, we became a really good basketball team and that carried us through.”

-Mike Woodson, after Sunday night’s win against the Dallas Mavericks

Obviously Shump playing better is a huge part of why we are winning.  On both sides of the ball he has stepped up.  But also, Murry finally getting minutes is helping us out a lot.

Kmart was huge last night too.  Him, Shump and Murry up our defense a lot, even with Chandler out early in the game.

I am quietly optimistic but also really worried about what happens when Felton and Pablo come back.  I think they are both better than Beno, although Felton has played so poorly this season.  But my concern is that Murry and Beno will lose their minutes but JR will not.  Honestly, at this point the Woodson JR love affair is getting really old.  I like JR and he was huge for us last year, but he has been beyond awful this year for the most part but his minutes never get cut.  I'm worried with Felton and Pablo get back, it will be Murry, Hardaway and Beno on the outside looking in and JR will still get his 30 plus minutes a game.

The thing is, the team plays so much better when we have ball movement and when we have guards who can attack the paint and break down the D.  Felton (when healthy) and Beno help with attacking the paint.  Beno and Pablo help with the ball movement.  JR last season attacked the paint more.  I don't know if its the knee injury but this year he's all step backs and outside jump shots and he hogs the ball too much and stops the ball movement.  Sure, we all bitch about iso Melo, but at least Melo when he isos is usually in the paint or closer to the basket and he gets double teamed, can kick it out and he's freakin' Melo.  He's probably the best ISO player in the league.

But with JR, if the jump shot isn't falling, he just sucks.  Like I said, last year he would attack the basket more.  But we need our guards to create ball movement and to attack the paint.  Beno, Pablo, Felton (when healthy) and Murry all help with this.  JR not so much.

With JR, he should get some minutes.  But if he is not playing well or if he gets cold, he needs to sit and Timmy Jr and Murry need to be given the chance to play more.  Honestly, I'd love to somehow package Felton and JR for one better PG.

The defense was great then this fool puts in crazy lineups. He has no idea about defense and is stubborn with his switching system like Dantoni is with his offense. They can't adjust and we keep there system even if they don't have players.

So happy we got through this Texas stint with two. But... W's coaching is atrocious!

Off topic, anybody know who reps SAS?

Woodson went on to note that he blames Beno Udrih for the incident where JR untied Marion's shoe on the court.  Beno should have known to tell Smith NOT to untie anyone's shoe on the court.

I think the injuries has hurt the practice time on the floor to get the team in sync making Woody look bad now that he can practice with a nice healthy squad we look better on defense and Woody has looked better with his defense.

Did anyone ask at the conference why Smith got 30 minutes and Hardeway 11.  Wooson low IQ

@ReneNYK1 That def was ind effort which has been lacking. We still did the 1 5 switch, still had Bargs Amarie and Beno on the court (Blew our 19 pt lead in the process) and still had to use up his TOs because they dont have Out of bounds against pressure. We were lucky when these guys + Smith on the court, Mavs missed a s load of open looks. Results can be misleading. The def still looked like swiss cheese

@tifoso6

that would be an intellegent question to ask. This guy is still pizzed that Red didn`t play him as a rook because he couldn`t learn anything, and this is his revenge. He will kill all rookies if he can. Fire his azz

@tifoso6 The Woodson-Smith dynamic is toxic and crushing this team.  From sticking with him all through the playoffs when he was self-destructing, to blaming Beno Udrih (?) for Smith's bonehead shot the other night, to continuing to park Hardaway's promise on the bench…

Hardaway is going to be a player in this league, and all the Knicks brass sees is trade bait for another nominal 'star.'

@Kojo Brown Explains the whole thing. That is why SAS props up our DA coach regardless the egregious miscues he makes game to game. It also explains to a degree the rotation and his reasons for lambasting anyone that might take minutes from JR. I didn`t like DumPhony and don`t like this guy(Woody). The last coach I liked was Larry Brown. Probably not a CAA guy

@dave27a @tifoso6 Maybe Hard must sign with CAA to get minutes along with Murry. Imagine the conundrum that makes forDAW

@ReneNYK1 @tifoso6 JR played awful def. He gets rebounds the same way Lee did here, didn`t guard anyone and hung around the rim to get easy bounds

@BiggieSmalls @tifoso6 Biggie, you need to relax and let people be critical of the team.  Its a very fair criticism to point out that JR gets too many minutes when Murry and Hardaway are playing better.  Sure, we won.  Mavs also missed a lot of open 3s.  They hit more of those and the game is closer and maybe playing JR so much costs us the game.  Because it has cost us several games at least this year.  Its not "hating" (overused term) its rightly questioning the decisions this coach makes and his love affair with JR Smith.  Murry, Hardaway and Shump are the future.

@BiggieSmalls @tifoso6 You sure your not Woody. If you are your a fake coach, if your not then you really don`t know the game. You might know the CBA but you don`t have an idea about what a coach should be doing
