Great news.  Congrats to the Isles who won games all year to get in.  They made it a lot closer than it needed to be, but they are in.  Whoever they play will be a good team.  Could be any of the NYR, Wash, TB or Mtl depending upon the last 2.  Doesn't matter.  The slate is wiped clean and everyone has a shot.

I do not believe they will fire Cappy no matter what now.  Had they blown the playoffs, Snow may have had no choice, but now he will be back IMO.

The Rangers may regret losing last night if they draw the Sens as the number 8 seed.  That is one of the last teams that I would want to play right now.

@since72 i think that i would prefer that match up if i am the rangers.  hammond has been great but hes still a rookie with 20 games of experience.  playoffs is a whole other animal

Reward the fans and 43 years of memories by winning all of our home playoff games and I will take our chances on the road assuming no home ice. Looking forward to having the roof blow off and landing on Hempstead Turnpike.

I'll admit that I'm a sometime sufferer of "paralysis of analysis" but I'm an Islanders fan and they are so gosh darn unconventional that it's justified. My latest take on the players; They like their coach, they are a close bunch, maybe too close, they are young and still impressionable they look for direction and because of this they are out of sync. They are confused by Capuano and his decisions, they wonder why their buddies deHaan and Grabner are not playing, they're confused with his line combinations and pairings. Instead of just going out there and playing they are thinking too much. As Yogi once said "50% of the game is 90% mental". I noticed a couple of postings regarding Messier and what he supposedly said to Keenan and I wish it could be so simple, players don't make up the lines and decide who's coming over the boards next. It can be up to them, deal with what Capuano decides and go out there shift by shift and give it your all.

@cournoyer. If I said it once I've said it a thousand times, Capuano WILL NOT be back. The only way new ownership does not relieve him, and in all likelihood Snow, is if they win the cup this year.

@jimmyc13 The problem with that theory is that the new ownership group does not take over until after next season.

jimmyc13
jimmyc13

Fully, they don't take over FULLY until after next season. I understand what you are saying but if you bought a business that allowed for a phase out period would you trust the previous owner to run the business as he/she wished withou your consent? No, neither are they.

glad to finally clinch.  hopefully they loosen up and play the way we know they are capable of playing.  beat pitt tonight so we can determine before the game tomorrow if we can rest our regulars.  we will know if the game means anything.

though, with the rangers you never know.  they've lost like 6 games in the last 3 months and now they are probably going to lose two in a row.  tanking for mcdavid. they better watch out though.  hockey is a game of fluidity and momentum.  if they change what they've been doing, that can spell trouble.  in all fairness though, they looked to be gliding through that first period last night and still dominating play.

@REDSpointofview    Red I lost sight of the point about the November wins, thx for the reminder.  Only good karma going forward.

After all those years where the season was essentially over with the singing of Auld Lang Syne,,, it will fun to watch meaningful hockey in the Spring.  And then perhaps "we'll take a cup of kindness yet",,, for remembrance of noble deeds done long ago in conjunction with the rebirth of this franchise.

It all comes down to this...  The NHL is now the NFL on ice.  Any given season substitutes for any given Sunday as this year it is almost certain that seven of the sixteen playoff qualifiers were not there last year.  The NHL Board of Governors can pat themselves on their respective backs for achieving parity with the salary cap.  The talent level from team to team has narrowed and now it's the intangibles like injuries or dead line trades that just might mean the difference between getting in or going home. The debate here is that we backed in???  Those wins in our normal swoon month of November are just as big as the wins in April,,, and once you are in,,, it's a whole new ball game so to speak.  Just look at last season's Ranger team, fifth place in the conference and a trip to the finals.  Can Halak get as hot as Lundqvist???  A hot goalie right now just might be the difference and a goalie that lets a playoff clinching point go by allowing a goal with 2.6 seconds left in a game might look in the mirror and decide he needs to play better.  If Halak gets hot,,, who knows how far we can go...

If it had to I had no confidence this team had the focus to win these 2 games to get in. Now maybe they can take a breath and refocus and go deep in the play offs.

I was listening to Brian Compton and Christian Arnold yesterday and they said that no matter what happens the Islanders are bringing back Jack Capuano next season. Those two guys might be nice guys but they have there heads in the sand just listening to some of there comments. They said the Islanders had a great season. The Islanders had a great start to the season 19-7 and have been basically a 500 team 27-27 the rest of the season. Hopefully the Islanders can win the last 2 games and have a good feeling going into the playoffs.

Compton and Arnold have more insight into the Isles thinking then anybody here. They spend more time around the team as media then fans.

You roll as you see fit, but hard to impeach their opinions.

drgary

@mrcisback I hope you/they are WRONG!  Capuano has taken this team as far as he can. Every year this team has a major losing streak under his watch, although not Novemmer this year. He never has the right answers to stem these slides and That Is His Job!    Despite what they say publically, the team morale is in the toilet after going 5-12 in their last 17 games. Keep playing Strait, Cappy!    Yeah, right!   Sorry, time for a real coach and send Cappy down to Bport where he belongs. ....

jimmyc13
jimmyc13

@rmvacation. When it comes to the Islanders does anyone have any insight? I've been meaning to post my observations of Arthur Staple and his sudden radio silence, but I digress. Compton and Arnold can not say that Capuano is going to be fired at season's end for two reasons, 1. They don't want to upset their standing with the islanders and 2. They don't want to start a coaching controversy on the eve of the last game at the coliseum and the start of the playoffs. He's gone, don't worry.

doc942
doc942

He's taken them as far he can? How can you say that when they haven't even begun the playoffs? It's a ridiculous comment. So if they win the Stanley cup, is that as far as he can take them? If they lose in the first round, then your point can be made at that time... But until the season ends, you can't say that definitively.

don't like the 7 game series against washington. Isles have been struggling and holtby is playing amazing plus ovi watch out if he's on the powerplay

@lolz- who would you like in seven game series?

I think the Isles are better then the Pens, but any other team could go either way- win or lose.

100 pts gets you the 7th or 8th spot...why are people still bragging about that. Let's just hope someone steps up and tells the coaching staff to shut up and just enjoy there great seats. Just like messier did to Mike keenen.

Did Messier do that? I never heard anything about that.

Because 100 points is a tremendous accomplishment in the regular season. Why are you playing it down?

And why the creative writing about Messier? Instead of making stuff up, say nothing. you will read less foolish.

It's not creative writing, don cherry intimated that happen about 10 years ago. If it truly happened I don't know, I just assumed that he knows a little more than rmvacation. And your reaching buddy it's like saying 10,000 dollars is alot of money, true in the 70's but not so much today!

Doyle Somerby +2 with a goal in BU's win tonight.  Needs another college season but I hope there is room for him in bport after that, reminds me of Andy Sutton (both his hitting ability but also unfortunately his skating, needs to work on that still).

It looks like the Boston Bruins answered the Islanders HELP WANTED ad. Believe it or not if the Islanders win there last 2 games and the Rangers beat Washington on Saturday we get home ice in the 1st round.

@MRC:

You have to win the games in front of you. Guess the Bruins didn't do that, and they are out. Points earned in November are as important as points earned in April.

Now go have a glass a vinegar and work up some negativity for the playoffs, the Isles are in. Must break your miserable heart to see them in.

@mrcisback Not very likely--You could probably win about $10 for every $1 you risk with a bookmaker that that scenario occurs.

Most likely a 100 pt season and that's insane. Like it's just crazy how this season has gone. Mind blowing. I said halak brings us 13 more wins. I was about right. A few bounces and it's at least 5 more so having a quality goalie changed this team immensely. So now we are on yo the playoffs. Thank you GARTH and coaches. But most of all thank you players. I'm super proud tonight. You guys make me smile. For the last few years I haven't warmed up to all the players that played here. I mean most of them I have. But this team I just love all the players. Kinda like 2001-1993-1987/88 and the 79-85 seasons. This is a quality team. Ready and willing to bring home cup number 5
