I love all the former NHL goalies here ragging on Neuvirth because he said he had a hard time adjusting to less shots.  And I know most of them were also former baseball players who would never have a heard time adjusting to being a DH when they played in the field their entire life.  Or pinch hitting.

@Don22 Don,

This may get me in 'dutch' a bit with some of my  Islanders brethren, but you are right, and for that i am sorry, but i am willing to give Neuvirth another game or 2, even in the midst of a mini losing streak, to find his game, perhaps some would like CJ , Poulin, or Nabby back in there?

" . . . I couldn't get into the game mentally."  Please tell me this guy was kidding.  Does he have intermittent amnesia?  A lot of talk about the Rags below.  I hate them with a passion.  I'd like to see them go out in 4 straight, but as much as it galls me, they have a very good team.  But worse than that they're playing every game like they want to win and know they'll win.  Kind of like we played earlier in the season.  Be honest, analytic, and statistical, match our lines against a lot of teams (including Rags) and we come 2nd.  We win because we roll 4 lines and roll them hard.  We win when we come at teams in waves and make them make mistakes.  We make them lose.  If we're not gonna do that we'll be skating uphill.

So how does Neuwirth want to be practiced with....hit him with a shot every 5 minutes??

Off topic, but I found it pretty annoying the past 2 plus games that Howie is giving us point updates on Tavares, Ovechkin, Backstrom etc.  Come on Howie! that's 2nd class.  Who really care at the end of the day?

It would be nice for Tavares to win the scoring title, but each time he touches the puck he's making a comment about if he gets a point here, he will re-take the scoring lead etc.  When there's 2 games left in the season and a playoff spot is secured, then scoring titles become interesting.

Joey Ferguson
Joey Ferguson

@doc942 i agree. if jt scores give a point give us a update i dont wanna hear "ovi and backstrom just scored" for the rest of the season.

@doc942 Fans care.  Otherwise they wouldn't chant MVP all the time.  I agree it's trivial - especially now that we have bigger fish to fry.  Maybe Howie hasn't adjusted  yet.  In years past he would need to talk about that to keep fans interested.

@Don22 @doc942 maybe he is trying to recapture his crowning acheivement with that call of the rangers Matteau, Matteau, Matteau.but that will not happen.

Al Davis had it right, "Just win baby. Stop worrying about the Rangers and their one Cup in 75 years and worry about our goaltending.

@Jay Morgenthal ... At lesast your "bull-dung" chant about Potvin always reminds you of our 4...

@Jay Morgenthal @csh205 no problem, 1994 was a great run for the rangers and their fans. last year was a great team and this year too - gotta give it up when credit is due. so can you go back to your ranger website now? i have no desire to troll ranger fan sites. even when we blew you out of the garden 3 times this year. I have no issues with any fan enjoying the success of the team they choose to follow, it has been a long time for islander fans, let us enjoy it. go away please. thank you in advance.

erika

@Jay Morgenthal @csh205 You Rag fans really do have to work on your vocabulary!.....And your math, because 4 cups in a row trumps 1 cup in 75 years in most places on earth. Oh and Potvin does suck.....Champagne from 4 cups!!!! Now go hide under the 7th ave subway with the rest of the Rag fans!

Jay Morgenthal

@csh205  Yeah, but that 1 cup shut up your 1940 Bull-dung for all eternity. and that's all that matters to me.

@elephant You Isles fans of all people should know how hard it is to win a Cup when you can't even make the playoffs more years than not. At least the Rangers compete every season. You likely cant even remember how good it feels when your team wins a playoff series, much less how fun it is. We've won more since 2012 (6) than the Isles have since what, 20+ years? That's embarrassing. I remember how big a deal you all made when you won 2 games against the Penguins. LOL, we have 28 wins in just the last 3 seasons.

We are relevant in the NHL, you're not even relevant in NY

Don22
Don22

@Jay Tee @elephant Ah, the troll is back.  How we missed thee.

Embarrassing?  1 Stanley Cup win after league expansion.  THAT's embarrassing.  For a franchise that has such history and is regarded as one of the best fan bases and classiest organizations - you sure do celebrate mediocrity often.  If I were a Rangers fan I would be ticked off that my team spends money hand over fist every single year and STILL has very little to show for it.

28 wins in just the last 3 seasons and?????   Mediocrity.

But I think what really bothers you NYI fans is the fact that you're finally good again and still you're living in the Rangers shadow.. Well, we are New York's team, sorry.

elephant
elephant

@Jay Tee ... Islanders fans don't care about being in the shadow or not. The Rangers can get all the publicity they want. As long as the Islanders are playing well and have a bright future, we're all good here.

Btw... Are you ever able to actually go to Rangers games, or do all the corporate season ticket holders (law firms, investment banks, real estate holding companies, etc.) price you out? Enjoy the "spotlight"...

@Jay Tee ... Haha! That's the best comeback you've got? If you're going to troll this blog, at least make it interesting [yawn].

@jrjr What for, when I can do your mom instead?

@elephant Yes actually, they do care.... That would be why they're so afraid of us passing them... It's not really about publicity though.

Just bragging rights & territory I guess, I don't know..

@JT91, you're name has "JT" in it too, smart one.

@jrjr  It really wan't that good but okay. Tell your mom I said hello. We're both lesbians.

erika

@Jay Tee I think what really bothers you Rag fans is that your venue is not as exciting as ours, which is why you choose to frequent an Islander site. You have a good team IMO, it must be disturbing to you that the team that lives in your shadow is just about as good as you now, and with a much brighter future...since you give up all your young stars! P.S. Your hair would look really good in blue and orange!

@elephant "Comeback"? I wasn't aware we were having a ShitThrowing contest. It wasn't a comeback, you dumbFucq. I gave an honest answer.

Jay Tee
Jay Tee

Eika, I'm a Rangers fan but believe me when I say that the truth is, whether 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, the seeding means so little. It's exciting & fun to try landing the best seed but it doesn't matter, If you want to get far, you have to beat whoever is in front of you, simple as that. You may get home ice or have an easier time in the 1st round but that's all. Penguins blew so many years with home ice whereas my Rangers went to the Cup last year as the Conferences 6th seed.

Don22
Don22

@Jay Tee This statement shows your hockey IQ.  Seeding means a lot.  I agree that who finishes ahead of who means little, but seeding is everything.  How would the Rangers have done if they finished 4th last year instead of 2nd and had to play Boston in the 1st round?  The Rangers didn't match up well against Boston at all.  They still don't, although I think Boston is weaker this year.

Seeding means a lot.  Matchups mean a lot.  It's much more than home ice advantage.

erika
erika

Depressing to see the Rags absolutely killing it..no matter who they play, and without the Queen, no less!

Well, not much we can do about that except come out Tues and destroy them. We may loose 1st place because they have games in hand, but we should fight like hell to avoid it at all costs. We have been in 1st for most of the season, but it only counts at the end....Of course if we squeeze in the playoffs and win the cup....that's OK too!

Jay Morgenthal
Jay Morgenthal

@erika  Yeah, like that's really going to happen now with Yandle and Talbot playing great.

time2win
time2win

@Jay Morgenthal @erika they are playing great no doubt.  can't argue that.  i do think the only teams that can beat them in the playoffs are the isles, bruins and kings.  that's what scares me the most.  i think they match up pretty favorably against everyone else.

elephant
elephant

I know its hard, but at this point I feel like we need to understand that the Rangers are tearing it up, and worrying about what they do relative to the Islanders is just going to add stress. The Islanders are having a great season, and if it takes some adjustments, off days, and extended injury recoveries to do well in the playoffs but sacrifice #1 in the Metro, I'm fine with it. It's hard to see the Rangers playing so well as the Islanders stumble a bit, I know, but we know what this team is capable of when its healthy and playing in big games.

Some guy had it right down below.  this is fan blogpost comments section. people can say what they want and the rest of us can agree or disagree.  this is New York, we gripe if we want to gripe.  I dont beat my wife when the isles lose, i simply biznitch about it on this site and then move one with my life.  I think as long as you are not taunting anyone you can say what you want, good bad or indifferent.  If i was in the locker-room i would be as upbeat as Johnny Boychuk but I'm not, i'm just an interested observer who then shares my observations with the folks who read this comments section bc that is what i like to do which sadly puts me in the minority of well adjusted people who have better things to do but i dont care.  i'm tired of the guys who rant about how people are downbeat or hysterical, dont read the post or feel free to type your disagreement which are usually the 2 things i do.  Guys are right to be proud of this season and to be optimistic about this season and the future but there is cause for concern as well and expectations for the first time in a generation.  Its not like the isles are cruising to victory in their division and can coast, they are fighting for seeding and to find the game that launched them up the standings in the first place.  This team has been nothing but misery for a long time, a lot of guys have been somewhat institutionalized by the islanders constant miasma that a lot of teams dont have to endure yet persists among the small market teams of the NHL moreso than any other sport.  We struggle to keep and sign free agents. the team is moving bc their current building is an asbestos laden mess (as glorious as the old barn is) and in spite of that we still couldn't get a new building done in our home.  the owner has done nothing but engender mistrust of the fan base and sadly he is the best owner we've ever had, isn't that crazy, charles wang is a terrible owner yet he is better than the pickets, better than mill stein and walsh, better than john spano who am i forgetting roy boe?? we haven't won a playoff round going on 22 years and we might not again this year, we have a very middle of the road goalie who is an outcast from a playoff contender who didn't think he could get it done, we have a bad penalty kill, we have some injury issues to important guys, we have a guy that is captain material who may or may not want to be on our team going forward and while the results have not been terrible we seem to have lost our mojo a bit.  in the scheme of the world some of these things might not be important to talk about but this isn't the New York Times, its isles point blank .com where we discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of the New York Islanders so lets celebrate when there is something to celebrate ( a great season so far) but lets also be frank that we have accomplished nothing as of yet of any importance (at least 1 playoffs round, even losing a 1st round game 7 would be a letdown - shows how downtrodden we are that its a successful season if we finally win at least a playoff round) and not hassle guys that are skeptical of the team assembled by  Garth Snow who has been a mostly good GM with a long term vision that is finally coming to fruition after more latitude than any other gm has gotten in the history of sports (other than Milbury who finally realized that he was the worst GM in the history of sports and pulled the plug on himself).

p.s. and lets not forget that Okposo had only 7 goals through pretty much the fist 40 games of the season...i love the guy and he certainly was not having a bad season by any stretch but lets not dub him a messiah until he rises like JC at Nazareth and contributes to a division crown and a long playoff run....LGI

⚃ someone asked "name a ranger weakness" ok I'll through one out- although the rags play a very sound game in both ends for the most part i wonder about rick nash come playoff time. He's already showing signs of slowing down and has never been a big post season performer.

cunny
cunny

@tonelli27 Obviously he still needs to prove himself. We'll see how that goes. Though that's hardly a weakness right now.

tonelli27
tonelli27

Rangers imo are 1 of 2 favorites to make it to the finals imo. But anything can happen.

lolz

@tonelli27 the rangers made the cup without huge contributions from nash

tonelli27
tonelli27

@lolz i realize that which is why i think they can win it if he plays well. Gotta be honest, btw i think Washington can give them alot of trouble. They'll beat Pittsburgh, they'll beat tampa or detroit or Boston.

lolz

@tonelli27 they have washington's number especially in the playoffs but like you said we'll see

@lolz Washington is a different team this year they play with better structure and i like their coach very much.

lolz
lolz

@tonelli27 they beat them with adam oates they beat them with their previous coach. Now they beat them this year with trotz but lets see what happens

tonelli27
tonelli27

Trotz is a better coach than adam oates by a country mile. Look what he has ovechkin doing, guy is a plus player and is still scoring goals.

Don22
Don22

@tonelli27 I agree.  They are a favorite for sure.  One weakness I see is depth.  I don't think they can weather key injuries to their 1st 2 lines.  If they were to have the sort of injuries the Isles had this season, I don't think they have the depth to continue to excel.  Now that may not come into play, so it's not an iminant weakness, but should the lose one of their top guys like Kreider or Zuc, it could be trouble.  I'm not saying a loss to a guy like Nash - not many teams can overcome losing their best scorer - but to their lesser guys?  Who steps in?

time2win
time2win

@tonelli27 here is what i'd say.  how many years did AV have the canucks in the top 4 of the western conference and how many cups did he win?  perhaps he is a regular season coach and can't get over the hump?
