Report: Kerr could join Knicks this week

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

Steve Kerr could become the new Knicks coach this week, according to a report from Frank Isola of the Daily News.

Kerr’s agent, Mike Tannenbaum, is still negotiating with the Knicks but the two sides are optimistic that a deal would be in place early this week. The plan is to have Kerr accompany Knicks president Phil Jackson to Chicago for the NBA Draft combine which begins Thursday.

Reached by text Sunday evening, Tanenbaum said, “Nothing new to report.”

LOL @ the verbal venom for rookie coaches... HELLO before "proven" coaches became successful/proven they were rookies.... I mean you have to start somewhere.... imagine if Doc, Phil, Pop, Spots (Spoelstra) never were given the chance because they were unproven.. Common sense goes a long way ppl

hmmmm Phil and Kerr going to Draft Combine means we may be making a deal for a pick ? or just scouting talent that may become undrafted  since we have no picks

Are we really still discussing Mike Woodson? He is no longer the coach, and he never will be again, please move on, and start conversing about more pressing topics.

I'm excited about Kerr. I defended Woodson and still do to this day (though I agree with his firing) but his defensive principles drove me up the wall. I can't wait to see actual defense being played in which guys fight over screens, double off the weak side rather than off the pass (which is probably the dumbest thing we did last year) and help each other out. That's something I know Phil and Kerr are proponents of.

Offensively I think we will be clunky early as the triangle involves a learning curve but we'll get there. Melo will thrive in that sort of system once he gets a hang of it.

The ones who supported Mike Woodson are the ones who dont support Steve Kerr.  I cant make this stuff up. Lmao. Coaching experience or not Kerr will be better than Woody.  It's pretty hard to do worse than Woodson

The highest entertainment over the next year will be watching the "Kerr-Lovers" evolve into haters.

Melo at a "pay cut" will still make more than Phil and Kerr combined. Why are people saying that Phil took the max? There is no max for Phil's position. Same goes for Kerr.

Knicks have been slow to overpay Steve Kerr in deal length or salary, sources say. Tried treating him closer to 1st-time coach than a star.

Makes you wonder how much control Phil Jackson really has. Phil wants Kerr and yet Mills is the one working the deal. If Phil Jackson really does have control over basketball decisions, Mills would have been long gone.

So Phil isn't coming back to coach, he can't physically, so shouldn't you trust that his hand picked successor is someone worth accepting and giving the benefit of the doubt, regardless of experience.  I don't want a retread as a coach, I want so new blood, didn't we learn our lesson with Woodson and d'antoni.  I don't care how much money he makes, but if Phil wants him, I'm all in favor.  Remember it's not about the coach, it's about building a system that will make this franchise winners for a long period of time.  Phil has his winning formula, and he's going to pass it down to Kerr who already shares his view.

@Art Perez  I agree. It's not like SK is coming in totally blind or anything. He's going to have PJ and probably four assistant coaches. I think some folks are just being over protective of their team. I can understand that.

@Art Perez

Doc is really the only relevant example in that list.

Phil coached in the CBA and in Puerto Rico from 1980-1986, and then spent 2 years as an assistant to Doug Collins with the Bulls prior to his promotion to head coach in 1989.

Popovich was an assistant coach for the Spurs from 1987-1992; after a stint as Spurs GM, he became head coach for the Spurs in 1996.

Spoelstra spent 9 years as assistant coach with Miami prior to being named head coach in 2008.

But yes, Doc is an example of a great head coach who had no track record at any level prior to accepting a position as an NBA head coach.

@xmen_nyk Remember our bet!!! Once Melo signs you wear that donkey suit(with extra long tail) apologize to all of TKB for bashing MELO & denounce your "BOY LOVERS CRUSH" for Lin!!!

@KnickelusKnickleby I think they are trying to get into this draft somehow. Phil said there will be changes, maybe he's eyeing a trade for a pick.

@Seth Plaut  Couldn't agree with you more.  It's not like we won a ring or got to finals with him for crying  out loud.

Actually this season was just confirmation that Woody should have gotten fired 5 minutes after the Indiana series last year.

@knega

People are not yet comfortable knocking Phil, so they mock his moves. Odom and Kerr have been widely derided, but Phil hasn't been associated with those decisions.

@SheSaidSpikeWho Those are people who think there is a Cap on coaches and FO positions....basically spinning it, into another ridiculous narrative,better to pay no mind.

@Knicks_Fanatic  Phil did state that he didn't believe it was necessary to change the front office as of yet.  But you do have a valid point man.

@kingofny

You think Stan Van Gundy would  be better at implementing the triangle than Kerr? What experience does he have with the triangle offense?

Art Perez
Art Perez

@BigChiefTriangle  You want to give them HEAD COACHING credit for being an ASSISTANT coach?? ok.. whatever suits your POV... i mean it's your perspective...

In that case using your metrics I'm more qualified to coach the Knicks than Kerr is as I used to coach Pee Wee football and Kerr has NO coaching experience... see how dumb that sounds... much like your argument... imo of course

brookdon
brookdon

lol. We won way more games than we lost with him and he had one of if not the worst backcourt in the NBA last year. That's why not the first to bury him. He bit the bullet for every player who failed this year who still is on the roster!

BiggieTKB
BiggieTKB

@illmatix  usually haters will ride it until the person is either fired or wins a Chip.. anything in between it's just easier for them to keep hating.

the Odds are always in the favor of the hater.  they can always turn and say we haven't won since 1973

SheSaidSpikeWho
SheSaidSpikeWho

Perfectly fine to feel that way. I would agree that it is a large amount of money for someone with no experience. However, that's an entirely different argument than the Melo one. We have no idea what kind of results we'll see from Kerr, good or bad.

@rgm891 @Knicks_Fanatic

There was the report that Dolan wasn't happy with Herb being fired and that he would be "strongly recommended" to the new coach. Also Phil wanted to replace the medical and training staff but was rebuffed. Not sure that the culture change is going smoothly.

BigChiefTriangle

@Art Perez @BigChiefTriangle

Well, football isn't basketball, is it? Lol

Not my personal argument - I've come around and am in favor of Kerr's hiring.  I just know that those decrying Kerr's lack of coaching experience are referring to his lack of experience coaching - including assistant stints -  (basketball) at any level.

brookdon

True but no one we had could have stepped in for Felton. He had to play. He was the best option out of a pile of crap.

Nets are 2-1 in the 2nd round...they're making as much "playoff noise" as the 54-win Knicks from last season!  Good call on them

rgm891
rgm891

@kingofny @knega @rgm891  I dont care who is on our team. If u dont make the playoffs over the bobcats or hawks with a player such as Melo on ur team.  Thats the problem.  Production or not that's reality.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@kingofny @MeloStat301@rgm891@Sandro Guedes@knega Nah..I'm not assuming anything man,...what I'm saying...if Melo does leave...I guarantee their will be "Fans" not watching the knicks as much..nationwide not just on this blog...and all together stop watching...it has happened before...I saw it with Ewing...some people just are fans of players..and not the team.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@rgm891 @Sandro Guedes@knega Then they were never really Knick fans...that's worse than the knick fans leaving after Lin went to Houston...they were never Kniick fans.

I also know of "Knick fans" that stopped watching when Ewing got traded...not fans at all..fans of a player.

BiggieTKB
BiggieTKB

@Sandro Guedes  you aren't "better off" .. you are what you are..

im surprised you're giving him such a long leash .. all the more to fuel your rage later in the season when Kerr lets you down with a three game losing streak and you can declare that you tried.
