Report: Lakers have interest in Tyson Chandler-Pau Gasol swap

Sam Spiegelman

The Los Angeles Lakers have interest in trading Pau Gasol for Tyson Chandler, according to ESPN.

Sources told ESPN’s Chris Broussard that when the Lakers inquired about trading for Knicks guard Iman Shumpert, they did not mention Chandler, but are mulling a potential Gasol-for-Chandler proposal.

Salary-wise, Chandler will cost the Knicks $14.5 million in 2014-15, while Gasol is an impending free agent. The swap would allow the Knicks to have more money to offer free agents over the summer, assuming they do not re-sign Gasol.

Chandler has been sidelined due to a knee injury for 20 of the team’s 24 games. On Monday he is expected to be evaluated for the time, according to Newsday.

The Lakers and Knicks trade talks began over Shumpert, who the Knicks have reportedly been shopping for most of the season.

It should be simple for the Knicks...Any trade they approach should answer one of these questions:

1) Does this trade give us a pg that takes us over the top or is our PG of the future?

(2) Does this trade get us some draft picks or future assets?

(3) Does this trade rid us of Felton and JR's bad contracts?

Otherwise, I'm not sure any of these proposed trades are worth it.  Knicks are poised to have Melo and a bunch of money along with Timmy and a few draft picks (less than I would like lol but so be it) down the line.  I don't see the need to engage in fantasy trades that don't address one of those 3 questions.

2 years down the line Amare, Tyson, and Bargs will all be expiring...That's a boatload of money coming off the books with basically 1 million each for Pablo and Timmy and a possible qualifying offer for Shump.  No other contracts besides JR and Ray past that.  Those are the 2 contracts the Knicks should be concerned with.  IF they can get rid of those Knicks are looking very good to build with Melo plus another max player, Timmy, Pablo, a draft pick, and possibly Shump + whatever remaining money they have to fill out the team.  No reason to jeopardize that imo.

If you look futher into the cap for the Knicks it would be better  for them to move Felton for an expiring to have more flexibilty. Also the Knicks will soon see how signing JR Smith will be a financial burden in 2015. Also the Knicks absolutely have to keep Timmy as his contract is nice for the rebuild in 2015. #OscarTheBaller

Jesus, too much trade talk. How about we focus first on having the entire team healthy, see if the team actually manages to put things together, and then we'll talk.

Apparently we're stuck with Woodson, which means the FO's willing to play it out with the present roster. There will likely be a trade here and there, but nothing major, imo.

If you're gonna change, you change everything. And since I don't see Woodson going anywhere, neither is Chandler, Shumpert, Felton, Timmy, et al. Not yet at least.

Deals evolve more like this:

Knicks : "HI Miami, would you open to trading Lebron for say Bargnani and  JR Smith"?

Heat:  Come again, did you say Joel Anthony?

Knicks: "No we said Dwayne Wade and Cris Bosh"

Heat; Hold on…Oh yeah that sounds exciting, we would be happy to trade Roger Mason Jr for Tim Hardaway Jr and Kmart.

Knicks now hushed voices:  gotta go Mr Dolan just came in…CLICK!

Just because the Lakers like Shump and Tyson doesn't mean we;re going to pull a Kevin McKale and give them to them. Unless Jimmy Dolan gets on the line.

BY THE NUMBRS: If the cap was set at about 58 mil for next seson then the Knicks would have to shave between 48-51 mil to offer a max contract. That would mean that the Knicks would need to mircaulously find expiring contracts for Amare, Chandler and Bargs just to offer about 14 mil per to start with annual 10% raises. The Knicks will be on the books for  at least 91 million for 2014 so this deal with Chandler for Gasol is poinless in cap relief. Questions?

Only way this happens, is if the Knicks really believe 100% that Amare is back to his old self and injury free and K-Mart will be their back bone defensively.

I think its a bad trade and I understand freeing up money but the Knicks got them selfs into this mess over paying Tyson. I said it when they picked him up, Tyson is no way worth 15 Million a year. I love the guy but the Knicks over paid him.

All these trades pros and cons...  But you can't have it both ways.  You can't prep for the future and also not make any moves. I wouldn't like to see Chandler go, but if you can include JR in that move, you have to consider it.

I don't care how Shump has been playing so far this year, with the deficit of picks the Knicks are in no position to trade away youth for half season rentals. It doesn't matter how much Chandler is making in 2014-15, he's still valuable to this team and NBA caliber 7footers don't grow on trees.

Not to mention, a rotating front court of Melo/Bargs/Stat/Gasol would be soft city.

No. Thank. You.

"Therefore, a Chandler-for-Gasol package would give the Knicks some money to spend in free agency this summer, assuming they choose not to re-sign Gasol."

How does an NBA reporter write something so off-base?  I'm no cap-ologist, but even I know that dumping Chandler's $14M provides no free agency "win" for the Knicks, who are nearly $30M over the cap.  So a Chandler-Gasol swap only worsens the team in the short-term without any long-term benefit.  If the Knicks are willing to worsen themselves in the short-term, any discussion has to begin with a 1st-rounder.  Really, really bad deal.

ds2488
ds2488

I'm not sure I understand the point of this trade...Won't the Knicks still be over the cap next year anyway even without Chandler?

Like I said in the last thread, the much bigger issue is the final years of the Felton/JR Smith contracts respectively.  If the Knicks can find a way to get rid of those they'll be in a much better situation.

bigdirty

its the best move for the future. This Knick team with a slowly breaking down chandler is not going to win anything. Get clear of as much salary cap space and go from there.

The only thing is that with felton/JR/ Amare still on the roster there is not much flexibilty even with expiring gasol contract. i think JR would have to be in the deal as well to make it work.

At the trade deadline if amare is playing well, he might be able to be traded to a team that needs a scoring big off the bench. its a small shot but could happen with the addition of schump to a deal.

Listen knicks I am only going to write this once.. So listen up knicks management. You need to save and keep iman shumpert and Tim hardaway jr for Boston's Rajon rondo. I repeat keep Timmy and iman for RONDO.. Here's what u do package a deal consisting of Amare, iman, hardaway for Rondo and Gerald Wallace... And if you don't want to include hardaway do a amare, iman and a 2018 1st rounder to sweeten it. We're taking on a bad contract in Gerald for an extra year longer then amare. Plus amare has looked good in the post which means he's still far from being DONE. If you have to add hardaway add him, YOU NEED TO KEEP CARMELO. Remember he can simply walk after this year. Players of his caliber simply does not grow on trees. But with adding rondo you have convinced carmelo of really being serious of competing with for a title. Do not play around with this. Lowry is not rondo and he can walk as well so now u have lost Lowry and melo while giving up young talent for a rental.NOT SMART. Make a deal for RONDO NOW.

I think about it if they take JR Spliff and give us Gasol, Jordan Hill and a couple of 2nd rounders

Hill right now besides kobe has trade value if he were to come with gasol might ease the pain yes no

@ds2488 They need a pg other than Pablo.  I don't trust Beno or the form Felton would return in. I'm all for the Lowry trade. What do you think shows Melo you care about winning more, holding on to a 2018 pick in which he would be like 34 or 35 or trading for a player that helps him now using that pick?

NYKnickerBocker
NYKnickerBocker

@Knicks_Fanatic

I'm still questioning this... originally, I heard and I keep hearing the Lakers are interested in Iman.  But nothing being said about any offer for Iman.  Interesting being that Dolan was pissed about leaking the offer for Lowry.  People may be staying shut on this one and you may see an Iman trade soon.  But who knows?

@BiggieSmalls If they take JR and give us Jordan Hill and some 2nd rounders you have to consider it.

@Jeremy Corporan why would the celtics ever do that deal?? shump has shown nothing but the possibility of potential and jr. is what exactly after 25 games?? just because they are young doesnt mean a thing.

The celtic can rebuild around Rondo since he is also a young player. Why would they trade their best piece??

SuperDuper

@Carl D HillPicks. I want picks. I'm tired of getting rid of picks in every trade and never receiving one. Give me salary relief and picks. no way I trade Chandler without it.

ds2488
ds2488

@L-Switch @ds2488 I agree they need another pg.  But I think what shows Melo the most is a long-term plan, in terms of him resigning.  Giving up yet another draft pick for a player who might only be a 1 year rental that won't even be on the team when/if Melo resigns doesn't show him a lot lol.

Daniel Burgos
Daniel Burgos

Because they go on after 2015. They will eat up cap space that we can use to sign free agents, like Rondo. They aren't too much money wise, but considering the production you are getting now (and projected production for next 3 years), it makes those deals bad. (Could change if JR finds himself).

L-Switch
L-Switch

@BiggieSmalls @L-Switch Yeah this is Oscar from disqus. I think it was hatched by the media who influenced the fans. I would like for the Knicks to stay competitive for now as the East is putrid this season. I'm not sure what Dolan's plan is but I would think that he has one eye on 2015. Even if you want to sell Melo on 2015 the Knicks need to still provide him with a good team to compete for this season and next. They have to go for it now and maintain flexibility.

Tikki
Tikki

@BiggieSmalls@L-Switch 'this whole "2015 free agency plan" was hatched by fans who want to write off the next two years and dream of something new"

Why are you pinning this pipe dream on the fans, when the report came from Wojnarowski that the Knicks planned to sell Carmelo on a potential Kevin Love pairing?

"Dolan has the resources to maintain a 90 mil payroll and he likely will trade out of any expirings before they get off the cap so we can maintain our roster"

Are you ascribing rationality to Dolan's thought process?  If the Knicks re-sign Carmelo this summer, I agree that swapping expirings and assets for 2-way players would be a smart play.  I just don't know why we should assume that the smart play is Dolan's plan, given the past decade.

Tikki
Tikki

@BiggieSmalls@Tikki . . . hence why I explicitly wrote "dumping Chandler's $14M provides no free agency 'win' for the Knicks, who are nearly $30M over the cap"

Celtics do the deal because they get peices and talent. Remember Rondo can walk after next season. Rondo is not staying with that garbage of a team lets be honest here. Boston is playing impressive ball but they are no contenders far from it.

@Carl D Hill @Jeremy Corporan no because it was time to rebuild and he is. He's got cap room, a damn good team, lumps of draft picks and a superstar PG about to return. I'd say Ainge did it pretty quick.

ds2488
ds2488

@Carl D Hill Bad season so far?  We're over a quarter of the way in.  But like I said, this is not just based on this season.  It's a career body of work.

It's not even about the money alone when I say "bad contract", it's really more about the extra year.  Like Amare has the worst contract in the NBA but it expires a year earlier, just like our other big contracts.  Except for JR and Felton.

ds2488
ds2488

@Carl D Hill @ds2488 It's not just based on this year.  I've never been a fan of either one of their games.

JR had a great year last year, in a contract year, but I don't think he's nearly as good as that and his play has been unacceptable so far.  Might be a "contract year phenomenon" kind of thing.

Felton has always been mediocre at best to me.  He got booed out of Portland for a reason.  Now we're seeing why.

ds2488
ds2488

@Carl D Hill @ds2488 11 million between the both of them based on this year's work?  Definitely a bad contract.

However, more about the future...Felton will be older and fatter and not worth it 2+ years from now.  JR...if he can recover from this year and be a good bench scorer won't be as bad of a contract.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@Tikki @BiggieSmalls @L-Switch I think the point to be made is about focusing on the present product, not what will possible/maybe happen 2 years from now.

And I agree, too much time is being spent on proposing moves, now, to prepare for 2015, when, imo, it's a lot easier to dump expiring contracts and rebuild through youth and picks.

Thinking we can lure 1 or 2 stars to NY is a pipe dream.

When was the last time a team's FA plan came out exactly as planned (aside from Miami?)

@Tikki The idea is to stay $30mm above the cap via S&T.Trade Chandler and Shump for a superstar. You can still get another player in  S&T for AB.Then you fill in with other minimum players who want to play on a winning tea.

bigdirty
bigdirty

@BiggieSmalls   actually you are very correct. it doesnt help at all. I forgot that the JR contract and felton contract. The team is way over the cap.

I think Amare could be shipped duiring the deadline for dead weight.

rico

@BiggieSmalls The idea would be to throw in JR and then trade Stat. Those 2 things happen and you can start from scratch with Melo. Besides , just because a rumor says "Gasol for Chandler" doesn't mean that is the deal.  The Only reason to get Gasol would be clear contract room for Love sooner. It would also clog up the Lakers Cap so they can't make a run at Melo.    Lots' of moving pieces and interesting to discuss, especially if Jordan Hill and 2nd rounders came with Gasol and JR went with Tyson.

He makes this trade for the future of the celtics team. Iman is no scrub he is disgruntled right now. JR is getting more min than him shooting like sh*t even tho he is himself lets be honest He's constantly involved in trade talks has a horrible coach utilizing his talent/development . You saw what he did to a good pacers defensive team in the playoffs. He has potential hes considered an elite defender/stopper with oppertunity and a change of scene he has the oppertunity to be a star in this league. Yea I said it his celing is that high otherwise teams wouldn't be beasting for him. Hardaway jr has shown flashes can be a good sixth man with a greater potential. If you ask me the knicks would be losing with this deal if you give both iman and hardaway only because their getting back Wallace whose on the books a year longer than amare. Then you add a 2018 1st rounder. Come on man don't tell me that is not a fair deal for both sides.

Don't forget Rondo can walk in 2015 I don't see them convincing rondo to stay I just don't Jeff green is no Carmelo. Their not going to win a chip with that squad. Plus you trade rondo NOW that his ceiling is still high. Just look at D rose for example, struggling after ACL injury. So I believe it's a win win for both teams like I said.

@Carl D Hill @rico @Jeremy Corporan I hate the Celtics and Ainge (as much as the next knicks fan) too but he's got youth, talent, a bevy of 1st round draft picks, cap room and one of the best PG's in the league
