Report: Lakers to offer Carmelo Anthony a max contract

Sam Spiegelman

The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing to offer Carmelo Anthony a max contract, according to ESPN.

The deal would be for four years and $97 million.

Anthony met with the Lakers — including Jeanie Buss, Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak and James Worthy — for 2.5 hours on Thursday, and later had plans to speak with Kobe Bryant.

The Knicks were supposedly meeting with ‘Melo in Los Angeles in between his visit with the Lakers and Bryant.

to begin, the idea that ALL of NBA should suddenly take less $ than they're worth is ridiculous. it's only particular types of players that should consider taking less. ideally, melo would take average of 22.5mil instead of the max deal of 26mil per year for five years. instead of the full $129mil, he'd end up with $115mil for the length of the contract. it'd be in all parties interests to some degree to accept that compromise. but this is such an f'n soap opera. he's flying around the country. the media is following him around. crazy. let him make his decision and then tell everyone on twitter. the non-stop speculation is not easy to avoid.

Asking Stat to stretch out 23 Mill over 3 years is the equivalent of offering Melo the MEL...just silly

STAT is a dead issue ..let it go

I'd say Many are right ..Phil is playing high steaks poker and HOPING Melo sticks to his word and takes less.

Phil has presented the opportunity for a win-win situation.

He has set Melo up in such a nice way.

But make no mistake..If Melo takes the full Max, Melo and Phil will BOTH eventually lose.

thanks Amare and Bargs:

@Chris_Broussard: Source: Knicks will not meet with LeBron's agent, Rich Paul. Knicks didn't seem to have the means to clear max room for LeBron

Taking a chance that the cap may increase over 40% within the upcoming years is not a gamble I'm willing to take.

No matter how u slice is it .The Full Max is not a smart move imo.

Melo got offered the Max by the Knicks.

As soon as I saw Gordon Hayward's deal I knew the max or something near would be the final deal. It's rare that players in their prime will take paycuts.

I still think we see $110-120 will be the final deal. Like I said before, both sides have to save face so some paycut has to be in order.

So what do you think is the probability that Melo comes back to Phil and says that he'll take a little less if the Knicks can get Pau? I say 25%.

begley from espn has a good point, knicks offer max, melo takes less then melo looks like the hero, phil really is brilliant

Post from P and T

It’s a fair point. Remember, it was two years ago that the new collective bargaining agreement was negotiated, and in that deal, players agreed to drop their overall share of revenues by seven percent, from 57 to 50. That has been estimated at $350 million more per year going to the owners, which, over the life of the 10-year agreement, would be $3.5 billion.

The owners won big in that arena. They’re preparing to win big in the new television deal, with negotiations already underway. They’re still certain that the Clippers will fetch the $2 billion Steve Ballmer has agreed to pay, once all Donald Sterling legal matters are cleared up. These are heady days for league owners.

So, is it now the responsibility to James and Anthony to ensure that their teams’ owners don’t get hit with too stiff a luxury-tax penalty?

That, a source told Sporting News, is one of the reasons why James reversed course and now reportedly would like to get his maximum payday. He is the best player in the league, and there is a bad precedent set if the best player in the league is not being paid as such. There is a fear that other owners could use that as a cudgel in negotiations with their stars, much like Jackson has did with Anthony.

You can imagine sullen team officials going before fans and saying, "We wanted to sign our star, but he is so greedy, he would not take less than his services are worth."

That has raised a lot of dander around the league.

"It’s just ridiculous," one agent told SN. "There is this whole brainwashing thing going on and teams are selling it to their fans that this player or that player should take less, that they would not take their money if they truly cared about winning. That’s BS. If you want to win, you’re the owner, go over the tax line.

"This is the CBA you wanted, this is what the owners wanted. Why does the money come out of the players’ pockets? The players just gave back a huge amount in the CBA. But, no, that’s the brainwashing — that the players are the bad guys if they try to get what the CBA says they should get."

RT @hoopscritic: OK, Melo: After we set you up as a villain for taking most money you can earn, then we'll actually give you all that money

IM telling you...that max would break him..I promise.. he has to take less..

The more he thinks about it, the harder it will be to leave 30 mil on the table.

Giving Melo THAT max would be a HORRIBLE move ..

HORRIBLE

also..The pressure would BREAK HIM IN HALF ..

ECF OR BUST.....CHIP OR BUST .

Seth Nadler

if Melo was offered full max and didnt say yes, and has to think about it, isnt good for him returning, it also means he's now going to wait and see where Lebron goes, this isnt good knicks fans

@Armand N Berdynaj  I'm thinking since he's now meeting with Melo anyway after the Knicks it was more likely a smart ploy to get the last word in instead of Phil

I totally agree. Owners valuations are through the roof and players are supposed to take less?

I still think the number lies somewhere between $110-$120. Both sides need to save face.

21.5 per

I disagree.... Anyone fool enough to leave 30mil on the table can NOT play for a team I'm rooting for. Bron and them left some money on the table to buy a chip (or 2) and the same can be said for TD and the spurs. But if melo coming here to compete.... He better get paid. NOBODY love my knicks more than I do, but anything under 5/115 is foolery.
