Shumpert is game-time decision

Iman Shumpert is a game-time decision for Monday’s game against Milwaukee, the team said after their shootaround.

Shumpert said his shoulder is feeling better, but wants to test if he can come off screens.

To me, till the Knicks get a quality PG who can penetrate easily and set up others, have a better jumper than Felton and can at least somewhat keep other PGs in front of him on the defensive end, they will not be a consistently good team. They may have some good streaks here and there depending on how well Felton plays, but will not be serious contenders. It seems like in some scenarios Rondo, Dragic, Irving, and Lowry are possibly available. Irving doesn't set others up well and Lowry is not that good of a penetrator, but any of these will be a major upgrade to Felton. The Knicks have to do everything possible to get one of these guys, preferably in the order listed above. Once these guys get set in some other teams, it will be that much more difficult to improve our PG situation. The Knicks have to create a war room and work out every possible scenario to make this happen.

Talking to league insiders, I'm hearing these names are being mentioned in trade talks within league circles (a lot of talk right now) ...

A. Afflalo, T. Ariza, C. Singleton, G. Davis, R. Evans, P. Gasol, T. Gibson, C. Landry, G. Monroe, A. Rivers, T. Sefolosha and G. Vasquez.

Worst thing this franchise can do between now and Feb. 20 is stand pat, which means that's exactly what they are going to do. They are going to wait out the Melo situation and pray the 30 mill will keep him. They won't make a trade to upgrade the Pg position because they don't want to trade the 2018 pick or they feel Felton is the answer.

Sit him. Shouldn't need him against Milwaukee

They should permanently list: "Shumpert's offense is a game-time decision."

How ironic and sad that the two Conference players of the week are Dragic for the West, a player we all dream we could acquire and Lowry for the East a player we turned down, yet we are stuck with Felton..smh

Woodson is an absolute joke.

The starting 5 needs to be prigs, jr, shump, melo, tyson. Bring felton off the bench with timmy, kmart/tyler, and Toure. Felton's minute's need to decrease, and he would be much better suited going up against opposing team's backup pg's.

JayfromtheFix
JayfromtheFix

Woodson is a big problem of the knicks today. He needs to have a set rotation but be able t be flexible with it. I would let players know I'm gonna play the best 9 players based on practice and let the players fight for it. No more of this you are a vet so you will play more than the young guns. If THjr is out playing JR and Shump guess what Timmy is gonna start. If Tyler is out hustling outplaying  Amare, Kmart and Tyson, he starts. Im not sure if Woodson can improve his play calling coming out of time outs. He its the only problem that the knicks have but he is a huge problem. Getting rid of Woody would be my first step before trading anyone. (BTW this post doesn't mean i want him to fail, heck i wish he wins the rest of the year and the nba tittle and become the greatest coach in knicks history)

The next step i would take is upgrading the pg spot. I dont mean with an average to above average player, l mean with a legit playmaking pg that has upside and youth. I guess the knicks management need to look themselves in the mirror and decide are we going for it this season or are we ok failing this season and will wait to get a pg in 2015? Personally i would rather wait till 2015 and get a legit playmaking pg so we can keep our assets ( Shump,THjr and picks). If Tyson can net us one i would trade for one that way.

JayfromtheFix
JayfromtheFix

No point to rush Shump back. Give him as much time as he needs to get fully healthy its not like we dont have other players stepping up. Woodson needs to find time for Tyler, i dont think he should play over Amare but he needs to get regular mins 10-15 a game.

saintknick

You can hate or love him, but he's a difference maker against certain teams - the Heat being target #1. He has consistently contained dwayne wade. Had he played Saturday, I doubt we would have seen the Heat up at half, or up double digits midway through the 4th.

Wade doesn't likely go 10/15 then. The team doesn't have to spread and help on Lebron AND Wade, leading to 7 open 3's by Battier, of which he hit 5 I think.

Knicks might have still lost, but they would have been in it.

Shumpert has a purpose on this squad, assuming the goal is a chip, because he's essential against Miami and Indy.

@Seth Nadler  Mike Woodson's daughter has a better chance to play over Jeremy Tyler.

@OLDKNICK  Ooh, damn.

Touchy subject.

Imo, on paper, the Knicks won in "win now" terms, but Woodson's has placed his losing stamp on this roster, ruining any chances of success. Denver's win now went down the sh¨tter.

Denver has a great PG, not elite, and no true difference makers. They don't have a player that can carry them in times of need. They let Iggy walk for nothing, their only veteran presence is now viewed as a cancer, and their scoring spark went down for the count (Nate).

They have picks moving forward, but they'll be all mid to late first rounders (should this team and coach actually choose to win every once in a while).

They're pretty much a work in progress. Their projects haven't worked out as they wanted.

They gave Gallo a ridiculous contract, which he hasn't lived up to (not my words, Denver fans see it this way).  They managed to get Chandler a pretty decent contract, yet he's played less than 80 games in 3 seasons, so that was a bust. Mozgov is....well, yeah...Mozgov.

They paid Shaqin' big time and the dude hasn't really been the presence they wanted and ultimately proved to be more important than the tremendously overrated G Karl.

At the end of the day, Denver's situation will be seen in what assets they get from the picks they got out of the trade.

Exactly right, no Pg upgrade this team is going nowhere and Melo is going somewhere else

@SheSaidSpikeWho  Vasquez and Gibson would be ideal. Too bad Knicks don't have resources to pull it off. That's why Humphries and Jack would be more realistic in my opinion. Don't know if those guys on the trading block though.

Knicks aren't good enough to say we don't need anyone except Bargs. Knicks can beat anyone but also lose to anyone because of Felton, defense and coaching.

This is the mindset that hurt us before though (no disrespect). Quick fixes with average players. Lowry is an upgrade but not enough to warrant a first round pick, especially when he could be playing over his head simply because it's a contract year.

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@zdiddy4nyk  Lowry would have helped, but if not getting Lowry means waiting out for Rondo, Westbrook, or Kyrie, I'm okay with it.

zebeto
zebeto

@Josh Gabriel Westbrook , Rondo or Kyrie .......any one of those 3 would be a complete godsend !

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@bockers  Primary need is a PG.

That's your first and only move. If this means losing Chandler, or JR, or Shump, or anything not called Melo, you do it.

Fact remains, any possiblities out there require giving too much for players that aren't good enough, and others hang upon GM's decisions.

As it stands, that's our reality.

Personally, I tihnk Hawes sucks, dude has no D whatsoever and his outside shot isn't that great. We already have AB for that (though nobody knows when he'll return). Turner is a nice player, but he's in a contract year, has been player strong ball, and will be looking to get paid.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@OLDKNICK  "I mean, again man, he'll be a big part of what they'll do....I don't want to kick him to the cub or anything..."

I sincerely dislike this guy (as a coach, of course).

I wouldn't worry. Stat and or Martin will likely be out of the lineup with some kind of injury soon enough.

@SheSaidSpikeWho

Perhaps someone needs to take Woody aside and inform him that if he starts Melo at the 4, he has only 4 bigs on the bench. That would be K-Mart, Amar'e, Tyler, and Aldrich. Given that he barely plays Aldrich, that would make Tyler 3rd off the bench. It is also impossible for him to be 5th off the bench as Bargnani is out.

saintknick
saintknick

@SheSaidSpikeWho  Fing Joke. A healthy Stat MIGHT be better than Tyler today. But by putting a high energy, NBA raw talent on the end of the bench, you keep it that way.

Knicks need a two-way PF that can play in the post, get boards, and D up, without killing transition or mucking up the D switching. Amare isn't that guy - no matter how good he has been in the post. Further, Amare is gone ASAP.

I know you want to win - and win now. But how can woody NOT see that it has been guys like Tyler, ThJR, Murry, etc. who have provided intensity that allowed the Knicks to get into rhythm on both sides of the court? These guys have been +'s in the same spots where Stat/Bargnani/Udrih/etc. have been ineffective or huge (-)'s.

This team needs to fix its defensive and transition intensity, and all around hustle. They don't need more Iso offense production, but rather guys looking to pass and screen, or finish on the weakside. All the young guys fit that mold. Stat/Bargnani are the opposite of that kind of player.

If I was trying to win this season, and confident that Amare has a shot to be healthy in the playoffs, then maybe I can handle this. Tyler is  Knick next season so its not like he's being forgotten forever. Its just that I feel that if Tyler becomes a solid 20mpg energy guy, that is more valuable against Indy, Miami, Brooklyn, etc. than having an ISO scorer who doesn't d up.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@saintknick  A chip is not the goal at all. It's a pipe dream.

For me, realistically, we'll be lucky to make the playoffs.

The real goal is to just make it to the postseason so Denver doesn't get a lottery pick.

Come postseason, this team is nothing more than a one and done, no matter who they play against.

That's how badly coached they are.

That's it for me.

Chris
Chris

@saintknick  Mostly the difference is he plays very little D, and is a black hole when receiving the ball

lindro88
lindro88

A chip? The goal is avoiding the misery of watching Denver take our lottery pick.

Funny because AB played a big role in beating Miami. We can't beat the buck's without Shumpert than we might as well hang it up.

@brookdon EXCELLENT POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm amazed by the lack of vision in most fans. Lowry is just a bit better than Felton - has anyone checked his career numbers? It's absolutely INSANE to think that giving up THJr, Shumpert and a 1st round pick for a decent point guard who will be a free agent at the end of the season is a god idea.

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@zebeto I don't really think any big trade will happen. If Melo is gonna get his all-star PG, it's gonna be in 2015 when the Knicks sign one.

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@kneggyknik Probably right. But I personally think it's more likely than the Celtics trading Rondo to the Knicks. Sometimes I feel that the whole NBA is making a collective effort to not do a trade with the Knicks.

brookdon
brookdon

Hate Woodson or not he's not gonna play a league min 3 year guy over someone who is the highest payed player in the team. It's politics and not his choice.

saintknick
saintknick

@kneggyknik  absolutely understand that. My point was more in the way of pre-empting both those who would say Shumpert is useless and those who think he's Dwayne Wade with a 3pt shot.

As a team without a pick, they should be developing youth (either to trade or use in the future) and maximizing wins. Shumpert HELPS with that.

Plus, if the Knicks finish that homestand 5-3 instead of 4-4, they are looking much better for the playoffs. We'd be talking about a 11-5 stretch in which the Knicks beat Miami twice, San Antonio, Dallas, and Phoenix, almost beat Houston, and beat who they should beat other than Philly and Charlotte. This while Melo is elevating his game, JR is showing up, and ThJR is developing into a potential NBA stud.

The rest of February is an interesting look - 7-5 is a possible record after this stretch, and the team goes up against a number of very hot squads, and teams that the Knicks had trouble with earlier in the season. They also see basically every type of team, are on natl tv a lot, and get miami in miami.

Assuming health, this next stretch is all-important to this team. If they come away 7-5, or even 8-4, thats a big plus. But they could easily go 3-9, effectively ending fan hope.

The schedule after that is fairly soft - and a Knicks team on a roll at that point could make some noise. Its all about defensive continuity, the play of JR and ThJR, and the development of some consistency in the middle.

A fully healthy, top of their game Melo, Chandler, JR combined with an occasionally explosive ThJR and a more efficient Felton could at least be relevant in the post-season. Too many things are likely to go wrong though.

zebeto
zebeto

@Josh Gabriel @zebeto..if both would take a lil discount ...hence getting better role players...That would be ideal .

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@zebeto but how great would that be. 2 local superstars, Melo (Brooklyn) and Kyrie (New Jersey), playing for the hometown Knicks.

zebeto
zebeto

@Josh Gabriel @zebetoagreed ....but we all know when a player starts pouting usually they can accelerate possible trades....(kyrie and rondos case)

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@zebeto I'm sure the Knicks will certainly try to make a trade, but their assets are simply not good enough to get a Rondo, Irving, Westbrook, etc.

zebeto
zebeto

@Josh Gabriel @zebeto..between now and 2015 Knicks should try and pry any one of them ............heck , I would even settle for Conley .

knickgirl35
knickgirl35

@Josh Gabriel @kneggyknik  you may be on to something. the other teams know (unlike some so-called fans) that all melo needs a little more name brand help to get a chip. they probably also know that woody's days are numbered here.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@bockers @VerySilentJay  I'm not underrating Evans at all. Like I said, Turner is a nice player, but his play this season will bring him a solid pay day, which will limit any chances this team has moving forward at getting either a PG or a big man.

I'm not even comparing AB and Hawes, because imo, they both suck. Non defensive shooters.

If anything, AB can score in more ways than Hawes.

I agree that a pass first PG is what we need, but even if we can get close to getting a solid, overall PG, I'm good.

@saintknick. "More efficient Felton" ?? I hope so, but he hasn't played well this year....
