Steve Kerr will finish TNT broadcasting playoff stint

Steve Kerr, who has an offer on the table to coach the Knicks, plans to finish this season’s broadcasting stint with TNT (Berman, May 8).

Kerr is scheduled to call games for TNT through the Western Conference Finals, which will be over in late-May.

Marc Berman said in the Post that while Kerr is leaning toward joining the Knicks, he may be waiting on a “formal, written offer.” In addition, Berman said that the Warriors are a “fallback option” for Kerr in the event the Knicks don’t meet his contractual demands.

According to Berman, the Lakers were “never in the picture” for Kerr’s services. The Jazz are also interested, but Berman writes that Kerr isn’t pursuing that option.

SO....GSW MOVED ON FROM KERR??:

The Warriors are expected to contact the Chicago Bulls to explore the availability of their head coach, defensive whiz Tom Thibodeau, who was an assistant in Boston when Lacob was a minority owner of the 2008 champion Celtics. They're also believed to be considering the merits of former NBA head coaches Lionel Hollins, Mike D'Antoni, George Karl and Jerry Sloan, and college head coaches Fred Hoiberg and Kevin Ollie, and are waiting for assistants David Fizdale, Alvin Gentry and Nate McMillan, the latter two former head coaches, to complete playoff runs. Kerr has 5 rings. Three with Phil and two with Pop.

For all the anti-Kerr fans, I would love to hear your LOGICAL alternatives. Because if its not him, there is a good chance we are going to go after a Rambis, Cleamons, etc. I doubt any of us want that.

Knick signings under Dolan have always been protracted. Remember Woody had to change his agent to CAA. I'm sure that Kerr wants to see a "formal offer" and have his agent and lawyer review it, before he takes the job. Phil is offering the job. He is not the one writing the contract. That is Dolan and Mills part of the business. I'm sure Kerr will not accept a spy clause like Woody did.

Everyone needs to relax, as I'm sure Phil is doing right now, he's giving Kerr his time to make the right decision that's best for him and his family.  You want Kerr coming in without any hesitation, from anyone including his family.  I see about how the Warriors didn't like that Jackson wouldn't give up his home in LA and was only in the Bay area for part of the time.

First everyone is on board with phil jackson and love the way he will change the culture and support his moves. Now people don't want kerr. I love it. Can't wait for the melo drama to happen.

At least phil has time to come up with a backup plan

More Dolan and coaches and why there may be a holdup on signing Steve Kerr.

Dolan has a history of meeting with his head coaches after difficult losses, and sometimes his emotions get the best of him.

He ended Lenny Wilkens’ Hall of Fame career in the blink of a eye by ordering Isiah Thomas to fire the former Knicks coach immediately after a last-second home loss to the Houston Rockets. For a while, Mike D’Antoni stayed one step ahead when he discovered a quick escape route from the Garden on those nights when he wasn’t in the mood to listen to Dolan give the autopsy report. Eventually, he also was fired and replaced by Woodson.

Woodson has played the role of the good company man since being promoted. He accepted Dolan’s ground rules and fired his long-time agent, Keith Glass, because the Glass family had represented Dolan’s all-time adversary, Larry Brown. Woodson also allows himself to be followed by a Garden employee everywhere he goes, whether it’s at home games or on the road. Last season, the employee wouldn’t leave Woodson’s side as the coach met with family and friends outside the visiting team locker room in Atlanta. It was an awkward and uncomfortable scene.

Dolan and Coaches

Brown says Knicks organization treated him poorly while he was coach

NEW YORK -- Coaching the New York Knicks made Larry Brown feel like he was being watched.

Brown accused the Knicks of having "spies throughout the arena" during his one season with the team in a story in the February issue of "Philadelphia" magazine.

Brown also complained about the way he was treated by the organization.

"Imagine when you get to work, they don't talk to you," he said. "They had security people standing close to me in press conferences, and spies throughout the arena."

Brown coached the Knicks to a 23-59 record during the 2005-06 season, one of the worst in franchise history. But his firing had more to do with his refusal to follow Madison Square Garden's strict media policies than his poor won-loss record.

Brown publicly criticized his players, especially Stephon Marbury, and gave roadside interviews to the team's beat writers after the season. Garden policy requires a coach talking to the media to have a public relations official present.

Because he violated the policies, MSG chairman James Dolan refused to pay the remaining four years and about $40 million that remained on Brown's contract. Instead, they settled for $18.5 million after hearings with NBA commissioner David Stern.

Madison Square Garden declined to comment on Brown's claims.

Brown has since returned to Philadelphia, serving as an executive vice president with the 76ers. He led the Sixers to the NBA finals in 2001.

He said he had no interest in replacing current coach Maurice Cheeks because he "could never stab Mo in the back like that."

"I still want to coach," Brown said. "I don't want to coach here. I don't want it to end the way it did in New York. I don't wish that on anybody."

Next we'll here that Kerr is waiting for Melo to make his decision before deciding what he wants to do. Also, all of this waiting around and flirting and there isn't even the basics for a contract drawn up?

Hey Phil, looks like your guy is playing you. If the Lakers and Worriors come calling he will take either job. Mark Jackson is your guy.

@Knicks_Fanatic  Woodson also has a ring and has the influence of historic HOF individuals of this league...we know how that went down.

Your inspirations, influences, and past only give you so much credibility.

@rgm891  It's TKB. www.fickle.com should be the true name of this place.

- This is the place where John Wall isn't a star

- This is the place where Jared Dudley was an ideal candidate for Shup

- In this place Mozgov was a deal breaker for getting Melo

- Here Fields was compared to Shane Battier

- Have you seen the trades scenarios posted? Wow is the only word that comes to mind.

The list goes on. The flip flopping in the place from one month to the other is flat out hilarious.

Wait until we hit the draft and we have no picks. That will get prickly quickly.

I hear what you are saying but where else can this team go with such a maniac of an owner? If not Jackson ,who? Just have to hope Phil can do a good job and keep Dolan at bay with positive results. Can't think of a better guy to do it in terms of championship pedigree and winning reputation.

VerySilentJay

@pezhao  Nah. It's just the lack of Knick bball and the mere presence of Phil opens up for all sorts of speculation.

To even bring up those days when Phil's time hasn't even statred yet....

@drmetfan Mark Jackson is 100% not the guy, other than sharing the same last name he has nothing that Phil wants in a coach, specifically a coach that runs the triangle, and someone that doesn't cause friction in the front office with his arrogance.  If it's not Kerr, which I doubt, then it certainly won't be Jackson

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@VerySilentJay @Knicks_Fanatic

Woodson was the choice of Dolan and Grunwald, not Phil Jackson. Phil and Pop have endorsed Kerr as a strong coaching candidate. Both Phil and Pop have been parts of teams that have won multiple championships and have or had great organizations. To bring up Woody and Detroit, who essentially got lucky to win a ring, isn't a fair comparison.

@VerySilentJay @Knicks_Fanatic  Woody's a slow learner. Slow talking--slow thinking. lol Kerr seems like he actually might have learned something from his experiences.

VerySilentJay

@Seth Plaut @kingofny  How can anyone be "anti" or "pro" Kerr...the dude hasn't coached a single game in his life.

There's absolutely no way of knowing if he'll be a strong coach.

There's dozens of examples of rookie coaches that fail miserably and another dozen that have done a good job.

It's 50-50 either way.

rgm891
rgm891

Lmao exactly. I wonder if he will make a trade on Draft night. Seems unlikely with melo still in the air

rgm891

I feel ya man. I am one of the most critical for sure. I just have hope phil jackson knows what's he's doing regardless he how long it takes. At least the guy is being patient which is a positive sign. I just believe we would have heard second or third options. Maybe phil jackson is the option. He can mold someone during the year to become our next head coach if kerr doesn't work out. Hope is the most important.

Yeah, I gotta disagree there. You're not a champion out of sheer luck. Especially if right around that time they reached the ECF twice in between their championship run.

No, it wasn't luck, they were an extremely well coached team with a solid roster with great balance and chemistry.

Whether we like it or not, Woodson's bball history and those he was worked with throughout the years are very reputable, HOF, and known to be lenfends in the game.

Woodson was picked by Dolan, sure, but has been endorsed, time and time again by great members of the bball community.

Once again, I'm not defending Woodson, I'm just calling it like it happened.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@knicksgirl35 @VerySilentJay  I can't even begin to think whether a rookie coach, even under the influence of Jax, could take this particular roster and turn it into championship winning team.

At leasy Woodson put it on paper.

knicksgirl35
knicksgirl35

@VerySilentJay @knicksgirl35  I don't think Woody could've taken us to a championship under most any conditions. He's too stubborn. I will say that whoever we get, if they are willing to listen and learn from PJ, we will get a championship sooner than anyone thinks.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@knicksgirl35  Imo, that's just sheer speculation. A lot of people sound savvy and wise with a mic.

A different story is when you hand them a room full of egos and a clipboard.

Woodson, even with his endless flaws, led this team to its best season in a long, long time.

I'm not defending him at all, I've always hated his approach to the game, but it goes to show what can be done under the right circumstances and what can happen from one day to another....as it happened with Woodson.

Look no further than Indy. Vogel was a great coach 2 months ago. Now he's considered sh!t even though his team has improved every single year, both in the regular season as well as post season..

VerySilentJay

@Armand N Berdynaj  Please, it's not even about who you listen to.

It's about forming an opinion and speculate according to what's happening out there.

1. Kerr's entire familiy is in the West Coast, hence a coaching job (which it seems he's immediately a candidate for) is a nice fit. It only makes sense.

2. Phil may be doing his due dilligence and looking at FO personnel candidates and coaching staff candidates as well. Maybe he wants to put his team together before he extends a formal offer. We know he's already met with Kerr and several different outlets have reported that Kerr still has NY as his first choice.

3. Then you see that the teams initially interested teams have moved on (GS). It's either because they learned Kerr wasn't entirely convinced or because they were more conviced by other candidates (SVG as it's been reported).
