Stephen A. Smith: “Carmelo Anthony is gone” after this season

Sam Spiegelman

Prior to the season, there were already whispers Carmelo Anthony would be a target of the Los Angeles Lakers when the All-Star forward hits free agency at season’s end.

After a 5-15 start, the whispers are getting louder.

On ESPN New York 98.7 FM radio earlier this week, Stephen A. Smith said Anthony is going to flea New York City as long as the Knicks remain on this losing path.

“More than anything else I’ve heard … Carmelo Anthony is gone,” Smith said. “Ain’t no way in h**l he’s staying here (in New York). I’m hearing he’s out. Unless the money disappears elsewhere — because he definitely wants to get paid — he’s not trying to stay here for this.”

Smith added a caveat: the Knicks’ front office could make a move to turn things around, whether it’s a major win streak or replacing coach Mike Woodson.

Asked about Smith’s comments, Anthony told Newsday that he has not made up his mind about his future in New York just yet.

The reality is Anthony is going to deny any rumors about wanting to get out of New York or his next possible team. Could you imagine if LeBron James said he was considering moving to South Beach to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh midway through his final year with Cleveland?

There’s no glaring riff between Anthony and Woodson, at least not one that has made any headlines. But obviously a 5-15 start and a pair of lopsided losses at the hands of the Celtics and Cavaliers can’t be too good for the Knicks’ chances of retaining Anthony. The Knicks should be an Eastern Conference contender, and while they were projected to take a step back from the No. 2 seed this year, nobody could have seen such a drastic decline.

I don't like Stephen A. Smith, but I think he is right. I've been saying it for a while. Trade Melo now, while we can get something for him.

If he's going to leave he better tell us so we can trade him.  I'd rather keep him but if he's bent on leaving it better not be for nothing.

I can't imagine Melo leaving, but if he is, I'd imagine/hope he'd give us the same "notification" he gave to Denver and allow us to work a trade out.

I've said many times, but I can't see him leaving and forever being the villain in New York.

He also said today that people close to Melo have said he's not leaving. If it happens, it happens. We will move on.

The Knicks are screwed, because there is only one or two teams that could use Carmelo as a "rental" - in other words, trade for him now. Most teams will just wait until he opts out.

Giving Carmelo a max contract is suicidal, but that's the most likely outcome - Dolan know most fans will quickly forget what is happening today as soon as the Knicks win a couple of games.

The smart thing to do would be to try to trade Carmelo, difficult as it is, or just offer him a sensible contract for 3 years at 17 millions per year. Yes, he will most likely get more somewhere else, but he will have to play in a small market, which is something he doesn't want.

Solution? Hopefully, Melo will see the big picture, settle for a lot less in exchange for having a say in building the team and stay. That would make him a hero in New York and more money in the long run.

JVG is a actual possibility. I'm getting really excited.

"I think in practice we compete more than we are in a game right now," he said. "It's really not supposed to be like that."

Well you could argue the Knicks look good when they go up against the Knicks.

Melo may wear that trademark Cheshire Cat grin while he's saying these things, but there has to be a breaking point coming soon. Remember, in 10 seasons as an NBA player, he has never missed the playoffs.

That's one thing LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant can't claim.

This is Stephen a way of saying "I told you so" if Melo does leave....and when melo doesn't leave SAS will then come up with a theory on why Melo stays...media 101.

the sop here is don't listen to anyone unless they say what you want to hear, that will confirm your opinion as the correct one even though it probably is not.

@SheSaidSpikeWho I badly wanted a Knicks' reunion with Thibs back in '08, but my understanding is that Dolan (wrongly) suspected Thibs of leaking stories to the media while he was a Knicks asst.  Nice dream to have, but knowing Dolan's petulant behavior, I can't see him bringing Thibs back in the fold.

@SheSaidSpikeWho that would be a huge mistake!!!!!

@Kojo1111 Because he withdrew from the game?

I don't know, I think it was just a show of respect given the situation with Woodson right now. After the way JVG left NY I seriously doubt he's even entertaining the idea of returning to coaching again.

It the typical type of nonsense you get from the media.  If you prepare for the worst and it doesn't happen no one questions you about it.  Like you said, if Melo leaves, SAS will sit on his high horse and tell us all how he knew it back in December.  But if he doesn't, and Melo stays, it won't really be big news and no one will question him or he will say he's was happy to be wrong.  Joe Beningo does this all the time.  All he does is predict losses for his teams (Mets Jets Knicks) but if they win he says "I'm happy I was wrong".  Its teflon, you can never get on the guy.  If they lose he was right all along, if the win and he's wrong he gladly takes it.

@MeloStat301 Hilarious since Smith all but arranged the trade between Knicks and Nuggets, saying the Knicks should give up whatever to get Melo. Give up every trade chip we had to get a guy who's out the door because of adversity. So things aren't going well right now, if Melo's that good how come he can't lead the team to a better record than 5-15. As Moses Malone used to say, me and 4 guys from the park.

Kojo1111
Kojo1111

@MeloStat301 You right. What I think Mel will do is give up a couple mil for Rondo or somebody who can actually play.

@rgm891 I have said the Serenity Prayer about the Knicks and I will be at peace with the things I cannot control....until the game tonight. Then I might get pissed, say the Serenity Prayer again, wash, rinse, and repeat lol.

@Sandro Guedes I agree, which is why hopefully he'll do the right thing (for everyone) and let the Knicks know one way or another before the trade deadline.

@VerySilentJay @Kojo1111 That's what I thought too.  With JVG on the sideline, fans are gonna chant his name and JVG doesn't want to do that to Woodson.

Tikki

@BiggieSmalls @Tikki Well, if you consider a 17th best defense to be "pretty darn good" (with Tyson playing 66 games) . . . alright then.  And the P&R defense numbers . . . we don't want to go there.

Interestingly, the Knicks' defense was more solid in '11-'12 (5th in the league!) with D'Antoni coaching more than half of the season.  But I suppose lockout season numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.

@BiggieSmalls @Sandro Guedes The defensive statistics for Jeff's teams speak for themselves, whether Sandro has seen them play or not.  JVG at least has the capacity to improve performance on one side of the ball.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@Sandro Guedes I don't know how much you saw of JVG when he was in NY, but he wasn't precisely Mr. 8-9 man rotation himself.

Ewing well into his 30's was averaging more than 30 min per game, as was LJ, who actually had to reivent his game because his body couldn't sustain the banging and his back went out on him. Yet JVG played him non stop.

Spree and H20 were his horses. Especially Spree. The dude was a 40 min player for JVG.

Also, JVG, back in the day, had no interest at all in rookies. To the bench, may they enjoy the view.

Also, many choose to forget that JVG's offense wasn't a work of art either. He excelled defensively, while Thibs has proven to be a way better coach on both ends of the floor, adjusting offenses and defenses according to the players he was given.

Thats the exact reason I dont want him haha. Toure murray playing all 5 positions

I have a feeling Thibs would DEVOUR STAT....and his defensive instincts.

ScottE

@Sandro Guedes That sounds right. So a team would be taking a chance getting him on his last year, but they would retain his bird rights.  Knowing what the rest of the league knows about Melo, it would have to a contender in a big market for them to make a calculated risk like that.

ScottE
ScottE

@Sandro Guedes Isn't there a Melo rule in the new CBA that prohibits him from getting the money through trade?  Or does that only apply to extensions, not sign and trades?  Either way, unless someone wants him as a rental, he's here for the rest of the season.
