Steve Kerr expects to make a decision by Thursday or Friday

Sam Spiegelman

A deadline is in.

Steve Kerr is expected to make a decision about the New York Knicks’ head coaching job as early as Thursday, according to the New York Daily News.

Kerr is set to be a part of the broadcast team for the Los Angeles Clippers-Oklahoma City Thunder second-round playoff series. He’s expected to return home to San Diego at the end of the week and make a decision then. And sources close to Kerr say it not yet a done deal.

“A lot of people keep saying it’s a done deal but there is a lot to consider,” the source told The Daily News. “This is a big decision in his life.”

Late last week, Kerr was reportedly not a part of the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching search because he was “close” to joining the Knicks. Kerr’s college coach, Lute Olsen, told SNY.tv that Kerr is “totally focused on the Knicks’ situation.”

I am curious to see Phil Jackson's backup plan as head coach if Kerr decides not come here.  Bring back Ron Harper!!!!!

If Kerr does get offered another position, he will have an interesting choice to make. With the Knicks, he will be sort of a junior, assistant coach trainee, with Phil guiding him. In another situation, he can just be the coach and have more control over the team and system.

Golden State owner and GM meeting with Mark Jackson now, and sources close to management and coaching staff believe Jackson will be fired.

The warriors are beyond retarted.  What a shame man.

Wow.....SAS stating that if Kerr was black, he would not be considered. That is despicable, and Donald Sterling level of racism.

Mavs interested in Tyson. That would need multiple teams to pull off.

Kerr is taking the job, every probably sign points towards it, and even Broussard said today that he would be stunned if Kerr did not take the job, based on the people he has spoken with, and what he knows. Everyone needs to clam down, a coaching search/selection is not decided in a week or so. Let Kerr finish his final telecast.

Interesting information over at box score geeks,   They base most of their articles on the statistic -- Wins Produced -- which is a model for estimating individual player contribution to winning.  The site has articles on how they calculate the WP stat and derivative stats.  It is basically a model based on algorithms and economic theory and has been cited in the Wall Street Journal and Forbes.

Based on their ranking for players producing the most wins for their team, Carmelo would be far from a max player.  Players ranked ahead (or way ahead in many cases) include the not surprising Durant and Lebron and Chris Paul, to folks like Stephen Curry, Kevin Love and Joakim Noah, to some surprises like Kyle Lowry and Dragic.

If you don't like this being pointed out, don't hate on this post, hate the metric.  Let's hear why Phil shouldn't consider analysis like the above if the bottom line is helping the team get wins.

@illmatix  That's definately the case for sure.  This white/black thing is total BS and Steven A Smith will regret saying all of this tomorrow.  Just to steer more publicity for Mr. Smith

@Knicks_Fanatic But I'm sure Kerr is also thinking long term too. He has never coached before. And by coming to the Knicks, he will have arguably the greatest basketball coach ever mentoring him, so if he ever does leave the Knicks, he would have gained a ton of knowledge he wouldn't have obtained in Golden State.

@Knicks_Fanatic That is one of my concerns with Kerr here....how would he feel when players want a direct connection to Phil??  Then again, what coach will be able to deal with the greatest coach of all time looking of their shoulder??  What coach with experience would want that anyway>>

@rgm891

There are two issues that, if fired, will have cost Mark Jackson his job. The first is his poor offensive coaching, which resulted in the 12th best offense in the league, with superior talent. The second is the turmoil he creates within the organization within his coaching staff and front office. He tried to ban Jerry West from practice, fired two assistant coaches, and was incensed that Mike Malone received lots of credit for being the strategy guy before he left to coach the Kings.

@rgm891  It is interesting though how Jackson, Hollins, and Woodson all got fired after 1 sub-par year.  On the flip-side Corbin lasted way too long and PJ should never have been fired.

@Seth Plaut  He did not say Kerr wouldn't be considered. You're a little off. He said Kerr would not have multiple offers lined up in which he is the front runner. LAL, GS, Knicks.

Just a word on racism. Back many years ago when I studied sociology, racism was something that people in power did to others. Sterling has the ability to and has discriminated against various people that caused them harm, such as being denied housing. SAS has no power to harm anyone. He is just running his mouth based on his opinion. He doesn't believe that one race has superior characteristics that elevate them above another, like Sterling.

@Seth Plaut Reverse racism doesn't get the same treatment as racism...people can get mad if they want, but its the truth..and it aint right.

@orlando_knickfan

That sounds rather unlikely. The Mavs have plenty of cap space and Chandler's $14 million salary would kill that. They want to resign Dirk, Marion, VC, Blair, and Harris. Not sure that move makes any sense for them, unless they can get Chandler to work out a new deal at a lower salary.

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@orlando_knickfan Not really. I'd ask for Jose Calderon/fillers to get him off our hands. Calderon would be great for the Knicks. He's like a better, younger Pablo Prigioni.

@illmatix  They're supposed to win it all, no? So, if they don't, it is a failure in my eyes. Not like they have room to grow.

@glider1965

Given that the Knicks only won 37 games, it's hard to equal win shares for players on 50+ win teams.

@glider1965 I hear ya!  I have a simpler algorithm.  Look at the number of years a player been in the league and then look at their hands for championship rings.  If none found check how many NBA Final appearances they have.  If still none and the # of years in the league is greater than 5, then keep it moving!

@glider1965  You're actually taking the WSJ and Forbes at face value. They never saw the economic collapse coming but they sure know their number theory. lmao

@Knicks_Fanatic @rgm891  Yeah that is definately a no go for sure!!!! Curious to see what happens to Mark when he gets fired.

@orlando_knickfan I personally think its less about results and more about a disagreement in the front office. They don't like him and are using a 1st round exit as an excuse to fire him.

@pezhao @Seth Plaut  LOL! Really? So because one or 2 black people say something ignorant you want to generalize it?

@Knicks_Fanatic Apparently they are interested in trading for Tyson. I can understand why because of his influence in the Dallas Championship team. Plus, Chandler is an expiring contract so they only have him on the books this year.

xmenreturn

@rgm891 Maybe but Kerr would be smart to go with the guy with the rings that has his back!

By coming here Kerr has aligned himself with Phil's fate and they are in it together.

@knicksgirl35 @Knicks_Fanatic

Just saying that accusing someone else of racism, like SAS apparently did, isn't racism. Making false accusation is still pretty low, especially when directed at Phil Jackson. Phil did lobby for Brian Shaw to replace him in LA.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@knicksgirl35 Yep that is totally dumb. Mark Jackson never coached before nor did Kidd!  Kidd was playing last year!

Poor SAS, it's hard to be just controversial anymore! lol

@Josh Gabriel @Knicks_Fanatic

They are also interested in signing Melo as a free agent and trading for Chris Bosh. Chandler is going to be well down on their list of priorities, which starts with signing Dirk and then Marion and VC. I just don't see how they can spend $14 million on Tyson.

If the Nets really make noise you will feel stupid about how this town will light up. I've seen the mets called a step child on this post but had there been more electricity in '69 or '86?

xmenreturn

@Josh Gabriel  I would luv for the Nets to beat the Heat.  Maybe LBJ will opt out and only sign for 1 year knowing that team is on the outs!

I want to see Indy and the Heat lose big time!  Even if the Nets win, who cares?  They're the little red headed step child in this town anyway!

@knicksgirl35 LOL  I guess we won't be playing who let the dogs out during games!

Hey your Stanks have an identical record than my Mets now.  Biters! lol

Josh Gabriel

@xmenreturn Mets and Jets get killed in the media all the time. They are real NY teams, just the less popular team in their sport. No one really cares about the Nets. For example, the Rangers playoff games are better ratings than Nets playoff games.

Josh Gabriel
Josh Gabriel

@illmatix The Nets are a novelty. They get talked about when they are winning and ignored when they lose. The Knicks on the other hand, get criticized for every little thing they do and everything get overblown when they win, like a true New York team.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@illmatix Yep, I had the Nets making noise in the playoff or being a very tough out for the winning team out of the East.

Yet, the Nets need to beat the Heat at least since they swept them in the reg season.  Just a good showing blows for what they gave up. They need to win now.  No excuses!

@xmenreturn @knicksgirl35  I get your mathematical point. lol
