Tommy DeeSo the word that JR Smith is opting out is one that we heard come from Moke Hamilton months back and it’s also one that shouldn’t come as a surprise. One can also make an assumption that JR will be back based on the fact that he said he wanted to retire in blue and orange.
Part of me wants to see the Knicks let JR walk, but I know that his ability to put the ball in the basket, regardless of how maddening his shot selection is, is a major commodity. Iman Shumpert isn’t ready to take the role of the team’s second scorer despite his heroic performance against Indiana. Major minutes or not I just don’t see him ready to produce the volume of points Smith produces.
So who will be there dependable second scorer? It isn’t Amar’e and I really hope going forward it isn’t Smith. He’s just too inconsistent in big games. They need to address who the professional second option is going to be and if they don’t I’m going to be very disappointed. We know what they have now and that’s a good team that can beat teams during the regular season. But they aren’t good enough and if they can get a better second scoring option then they have to explore it all costs. JR has hit his ceiling and Shumpert is still an relative offensive unknown who wants more minutes and more opportunities to score.
Time to make a decision on how they can make the logical next step as a team to get over the hump and push towards the Finals.
