Just came back from looking at prices on the secondary market for the playoff games.Someone is asking $11,703 for a ticket for games 3 and 4.I hope one gets a piece of Equity in the franchise for that amount.

It's a little late too be breaking in a rookie (Rheinhart) at the start of a playoff seris against the leading goal scorer in the NHL. The Isles made their "bed" by not bring up Rheinhart sooner and giving him some experience! Unfortunaely with the loss of Hamonic we will live and die with Strait, Viz and Hickey, which is ironic considering there's  a possibilty all three will be gone next season!

@TonyM Refusing to bring up a player who isn't ready to be brought up is smart management.

Unless it TonyM-  then its poor management because having:

Boychuk, Leddy, Viz, Hickey, Hammer, CdH, Strait and Dono on the roster practicing all season with the team each and every day all is year isn't enough defenders..

You need 6, the Isles carry 8 and get grief for not having 9. Even though most, if not all, of the other 29 franchises only carry 7 defenders on their roster.

Math, numbers and roster limits can be difficult..

Instead of playing Strait perhaps Garth Snow can make an emergency deal and Acquire Dancing Larry from the NY Rangers. He may have to trade some of the Ice Girl's Costumes.Dancing Larry moves better than Brian Strait !!!

Thats why your on a sofa watching the team, and not standing behind a bench. Because the eyes of the fans are way short of the eyes of the players, coaches and management.

I've won as many playoff series from the comfort of my sofa as Chuck Wang, Snow and Cappy combined...

And I did it without wearing pants.

Hey, your back..

I really hope the Isles win the Cup with Wang as the owner- because i don't think you could possibly survive the strain of cheering them on while considering a picture of a smiling Charles Wang, Snow and Cappy on the cover of every NY media publication..

But it is nice to see your protecting your friend from common sense, math while stillassuming the average fan is smarter then an NHL head coach and his assistant coaches..

@Mark Terrin Mark the #5 pick Morgan Reilly GP-154 G-10-A-46, #6 pick Hampus Lindholm GP-156-G-13-A-51,#7 pick Mathew Dumba GP-71-G-9-A-9, #8 pick Derrrick Pouliot GP-34-G2-A-5 and #9 pick Jacob Trouba GP-130-G-17-A-34 all picked in the 2012 NHL draft after Griffen Reinhart. The #5,6,7 and 9 picks all look like there going to be stars. All these prospects are good enough to make there NHL team with the exception of Reinhart. Reinhart and Pulock looked really good to me in training camp.

mrcisback

@Mark Terrin @mrcisback Mark i also could have mentioned #15 pick Codi Ceci GP-130-G-8-A-22 or #22 pick Olli Matta GP-98-G-10-A-28 but i didn't but you get the point. 7 defenseman picked after Reinhart are ready and playing except the #4 pick.

Mark Terrin

DID anyone out there go to the NY Islander/Minnesota Wild game? Did anyone see Mathew Dumba taken the same year as Griffin Reinhart ? What  are we waiting for? A Brooklyn debut ? Me thinks Strait stinks !!!!

bobb

A guy that was drafted 4th, three years ago should be better than Strait or Donovan by now.  However, expecting him to step in and replace Hamonic at this point is asking too much. The Islanders didn't feel the need to  rush him, but with the injuries piling up, now's the time. Personally, I want to see what he can do. Adding his size on the backend has to be an improvement.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

i'd bet my life they have way more raw talent than both of them combined.  but that is exactly what it is...raw. and his confidence could be very fragile.  no one here believes we are true contenders...why risk his development then? because he was a #4 pick? not worth it

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

@slapshot18_rs

it is a silly game, and here are the rules:

The isles are playing Bailey on the top line because they rushed him, and he was a high draft pick. So they need to justify the pick and rushing him to the NHL.

The same folks now argue:

The Isles picked Reinhart at #4. The Isles should rush him into the line up after a single season in the AHL because he was a high draft pick.

Condemn the Isles for picking Bailey high and rushing him into the NHL. Then complain the Isles aren't rushing  Reinhart into the NHL because they picked him high.

I want what I want, when I want it. Just like a spoiled brat.

Next thing you will read is people telling you the Isles won't make the playoffs for the last three weeks. Then the same folks will complain they can't get seats to Isles home playoff games..

They not gonna make the playoffs, so why should i care about playoff tickets? They made they playoffs, but they don't care that i suddenly care- about playoff tickets..

Or has that tickets thing already happened?

@rmbbanned2 @slapshot18_rs

Banned, you're missing the point, which is: d-men drafted after Reinhart are playing well in the NHL, he's not. Even allowing for players taking their own time to make it -- bringing up Bailey is a straw man -- Isles clearly drafted wrong, or else Reinhart would be playing by now. Pretty simple equation.

bobb
bobb

@rmbbanned2 @slapshot18_rs  I said the same thing about Strome a year ago, but obviously patience is starting to pay off with him. The problem with islander fans (myself included) is it's so hard to be patience after years of being the laughingstock of the league. The Islanders come out this season and make us finally think they are a legitimate team, then lay an egg in the second half of the season. Tough to stay positive and not be a Monday morning QB given the circumstances. Given where Reinhart was drafted, he probably should be further along, but if he develops the way Strome did in the past year, we'd all be happy.

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

"Our vision is indeed to draft and develop our own players," said Shanahan. "When a player is ready to come up, he'll come up. If a player needs more time to reach his full potential, we'll leave him down there. I think every decision that we make is about how do we build a winning organization that can sustain itself year after year after year through the draft. That is our vision.'

Sounds and reads like another organization right here.

Everything has its time and place. I though right above this silliness was perfect:

"Its about time the #4 over all pick makes his way to the Islanders."

Looking back over the long cold last decade- the mistakes of the past are obvious to most, but some are in such a rush to repeat them..

If a player isn't ready, the player isn't ready.. Forcing them into a position where failure is likely isn't management, it is total stupidity.

mrcisback
mrcisback

Its about time the #4 over all pick makes his way to the Islanders. He'll probably be an improvement over some of the defenseman we have in there right now. He might be just what the doctor ordered.

Kevin Sharkey

@mrcisback  "He'll probably be an improvement" I wouldnt hold your breath. Unfortunately He is replacing an injured Hamonic NOT a healthy Strait. They only way the Defense will improve is if Crapuano stops over utilizing Mark Strait.

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

@mrcisback That line of thinking is incredibility short sighted.

"Sorry kid, your not ready- but since your a high draft pick at age 21- tough luck- get out there and fail."

When the kid fails, it will the fault of everybody- according to the impatient brat who once demanded he go out there and fall on his face.

slapshot18_rs

well there are others in his draft class that have succeeded in the league, so reinhart must be a bust!

@mrcisback I hope.  I must say though, he didn't look that impressive in his previous stint.  I know it wasn't much to go on but I hope he has improved his game.  21 years old so I'm not losing hope, but was hoping for more.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@doc942 @mrcisback it was eight games....and then he went into the ahl and played poorly for the majority of the first half of the season, before making adjustments and improving drastically in the second half (first d pair all year keep in mind, first professional season).  he has plenty of time to turn into that #4 overall pick, have some faith.

Same stuff, different day.

Isles ruined Lee by holding him back.

Isles are ruining Reinhart because they aren't promoting him.

Sarcasm font- on!

It is so difficult to deny these truths, given the lack of good young players on the current Isles squad that have been home grown.

But then again- the guys in charge can't even draft properly, so there definitely cant draft with the picks they have anyway.

Oh yeah- can you believe Brendan Shanahan up in Toronto?

"Draft and develop our own players."

Only moron like Garth Snow over 7 years ago would suggest something like that. They better not give that Shanny guy a real job in NHL management. only a crazy back up goaltender turn GM would think or even say such a thing.

Sarcasm font- OFF!

@rmbbanned2. I don't know if you saw my last response to your comment as part of the Grabovski article, Larry Brooks story? If not, no biggie, I basic stated that you have to "consider the source" when reading some of these stories and comments. Fans are fickle and love to second guess, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. Also, in regard to the Toronto situation, do you listen to the NHL network on Sirius? They played back Shanahan's press conference and were discussing how the Maple Leafs are going with a committee approach to the front office and how this is the new trend that teams will be adopting. I find it so funny that when the Islanders tried that concept with Neil Smith back in 2006 everyone mocked them and now that Brendan Shanahan and the Leafs are doing it it's ingenious. Very little integrity out there, just remember instead of getting yourself upset just "consider the source" and laugh.

@mrcisback, @rmbbanned2. Hey guys, This may not be any of my business and I'll apologize in advance if I'm getting in the middle of something but I've had postings with both of you and I have to say you both provide thought provoking comments and I appreciate that. I present my opinions with vigor- because nobody hears the church mouse. I just enjoy reading some of the stuff these guys write each and every day, and having the chance to respond.

I always enjoy reading how many think they are smarter then a self made billionaire concerning finance. I think its great when arm chair warriors know more then Snow- who played in the NHL and worked the rules to his advantage when he played the game.

As if Snow wasn't smart enough( 2 degrees including a masters degree) to adopt policies that even now the respected and very savvy Shanahan is mimicking. Then put it out in front of a guy like Wang who is clearly a long term strategic thinker..

@mrcisback When you post a comment on a public board that features a reply button- your in a position to suffer replies. Either you play by the blog rules, or you don't play at all. If you only want people that agree with you, find a room with lots mirrors.

I think your a fan of the team. But your idea of a "long term timeline" is the very next shift. This Owner, GM and coach have a different view. Perhaps you reconsider your view, and their view. It will lower you frustrations with the franchise.

You propose rash decisions that make zero sense often beyond the next game. That you view a 21 year old reinhart as something of a disappointment is rather shocking. He is after all, only 21 with a single AHL season under his belt.

If your embarrassed because you spent years with your internet friends mocking the entire "rebuild" process, and now find yourself watching the respected guys in Toronto applying the same "rebuild" process to their franchise, don't be embarrassed. It continues to be long bumpy road, but it gotten way smoother this last season. Nothing is perfect, but the results are starting to appear, and many of the players selected in the process haven't reach close to their max potential.

These are good days, that have the promise of even better days. Try to enjoy them because they have been a long time coming, and we deserve them.

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

@jimmyc13 There is just a lot of history here between me and few guys. basically they hate the Owner, the GM and the coach and have spend years abusing the management team and anybody who supported the process called the rebuild.

Now that a decent chunk of the talent has started to arrive in the NHL, they find themselves in the impossible position of having to cheer the results of a process, and the men who implement the process.

They aren't enjoying it because they find themselves at odds with celebrating the teams success, while being incapable to praising the folks who made this success- and future success- possible.

They will even argue that this regular season isn't successful( cause 101 point seasons grow in Uniondale all the time, and the Isles had more points this year then the Eastern Conference champion Rangers had last year) until the Isles win a playoff round.

No worries, because then even that standard won't be enough. They will rationalize their points with "do you even watch the game" or " I just know".

In the end, anybody optimistic about the team is spinning straw into gold while drinking kool aid and wearing rosed colored glasses- in the pay of the Wang and a Snow apologist.

Pointing out each and every mistake, misstep, or stumble makes you a die hard fan and a realist with the limp richard excuse of being abused for decades to justify the ceaseless negativity. They abandon the team after each and every loss. Lotsa  life boats on the water within the last three weeks, and now they all want to come back so if the team falls, they can all abandon ship again.

Does anyone know the Rule about adding extra players to team rosters for the playoffs.  I thought it was 2, if that's correct does Donovan count?  I not talking about who should play, etc.  Just what's the expansion rule.

jimmyc13
jimmyc13

Good question. Donovan has been on the Islanders 23 man roster the whole season so I would say he counts towards that number. Are you asking if we could remove him from that number in order to bring up another player?. I know the salary cap applies to the regular season only but in terms of roster size for the Playoffs I don't know. Sorry, that's a very interesting question that I am definitely going to look into.

jimmyc13
jimmyc13

@finmaccul. Sorry I couldn't attach the link but if you did a search on "the business of the game roster limits" you'll find the roster rules as per the CBA. It states from the conclusion of training camp until 12:01am on trade deadline day the rosters are limited to 23 players but after that it's limitless up to the maximum number of 50 contracts.

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

@jimmyc13 The isles are running 4 defensive pairs at practice. They have run 4 defensive pairs all season. Part of this might be to keep practice at a quick tempo- as that is their style of play. Train like you fight.

With Hammer out- Reinhart has been paired with Dono, and none of the other expected game 1 starters. Just keeps the practice routine the same for the playoffs as it has been or the entire regular season.

They didn't bring up any extra forwards- so it appears to be near certain everybody up front is good to go. Grabbo wasn't wearing the " non contact sweater" today as per Staple. Very good news for the Isles.

Custance ( i think it was Custance) makes a solid point. Up front it all starts in the middle, and the Isles middle four of JT, Frans, Brock and CC are superior to the Caps middle 4.

I think the Isles are superior 5 on 5 vs the Caps with a deeper roster. It will be the Caps PP vs the Isles vastly improved PK, and if Jaro can stay within sight of Holtby concerning goalie stats.

Green can be a bit of a train wreck defensively, Orpik is big guy not quick and theres a reason Gleason was traded for jack hillen and a fourth rd draft pick. It wasn't  because Hillen is aces on the blue line.

Espn has it 58%-42% in favor of the Caps..

jimmyc13
jimmyc13

@rmbbanned2. The flag that I've been waving all year is the Islanders depth, especially at center. When completely healthy they ice a team with 7 centers. That versatility is a huge advantage. I give the islanders the edge in forwards over the caps. Defense and in goal I give the edge to the caps. The caps have a nice mix on D, they have size grit and skill but that doesn't mean they can't be exploited. Orpik and Gleason are their lumbering big physical guys that the islanders need to get pucks behind, they need to make them handle the puck. Green, Carlson, Alzner and Niskanen are their strength. In goal, it's all going to come down to how the guys play in front of the respective goalies. My biggest concern is coaching, I am not a fan of Capuano. For the Islanders to win this series they are going to have to be the aggressor, they need to play with speed and tempo. They can't play the passive game they've been playing the last 3 months. My guess is that Trotz is preparing the Caps for an islander team that's going to try to blanket Ovechkin and slow things down. I say do the opposite go after them, force the play, make the caps make adjustments. My thoughts on ESPN's prediction are this; they like Barry Trotz, he's a good coach and a even better man. He's gotten the league's most dynamic goal scorer to go from a horrendous minus player to be a plus player without sacrificing offense. They are this year's media darling. If you really watched the caps this year, they were a very up and down team all year. Though Trotz got Holtby's game to the next level I did think he rode him a little too hard. Bottom line, 2 very different teams that have strengths and weaknesses that counter balance each other. If the Islanders can play the way they played prior to the all star game they win. If they play post all star game style caps win.

someone i know who used to be in the njd organization told me that snow and lamoriello have a pretty tight relationship, that lou was sort of a mentor to him and thinks highly of him.  at least in terms of saying zilch on the status of injuries, there's definitely a similarity.

nyicdneh

Getting injury info regarding Isles players is like reading the New England Patriots injury report. Garth et al. have become the NHL version of Belichick and company! If Harmonic is out for anything more than 1 game, this series will be over before it gets back to the island. The Isles are well below .500 when either one of Hammer, JB or Leddy are out. Can't afford to spot Wash a 2-0 lead whatsoever!

On a separate note, Ted Nolan and Trots OUT in Buffalo. Both along with other assistant coaches were fired *yesterday by GM Tim Murray.

Murray did retain goaltender coach Arturs Irbe. Heck of a player back in his days in net for the Sharks.

Hope things are well with you and yours too ej, I'm going to see how Jack does in this first round before I call for his head but I will say this if your goalie is going to give up soft goals like the goal Halak gave up in Philly any coach would have trouble winning, these games should be close and a softie could kill you.

bammer26
bammer26

@tag1 - Halak has been somewhat inconsistent, but as I posted many months ago, he has been a good product of good defensive systems.

Hickey, Vis, and Strait will be our doom, or saviors if you will moving forward. Lack of size and talent and now with Hammer possibly OUT, not good. Caps have an excellent PP and have been solid in their own end as of late. Barry Trotz vs. Cappy, no contest..

All of the Grabo out, and Kennedy-Grabs-Nielsen bouncing cannot be good heading in, offensively that is.

Hope the Halakmonster has some of what Glenn Healy had back in the '92 run..

Caps can be beat, stay out of the sin bin and keep Ovie in some form of center ice check without that left side one timer.

Seems like that on Teddy, with a bad track history on internal issues. But man, did he get the best of our 2007 team. Did fine also on Sabre land in the late 90's. I would take him and Trots anytime.

Just watched the TSN feed in Leaf land. They are a mess and not sure that BS can lead them to the promised land. Got to give him some time thought to put his people in place.

I think it's a long series I think the caps are physically stronger than the Isles I think the Isles will have to play their speed game to win this series. If Halak outplays Holtbe I think the Isles win the series especially when you consider that it seems the pk has righted the ship which was close to sinking this year. I was watching the NHL network and the commentator talking about this series brought up that the Isles finished 26 in the pk and that could hurt them against the caps but failed to mention the pk has been much better the past month or so.

I think if Cappy is here next season, he will have 3 winning seasons in 6 years..

I dont really see Nolan as a winning touch, or an improvement when you factor in coaching record.

I guess like politics, if you keep repeating the lies over and over, eventually it becomes the new bar for the truth.
