Tyson Chandler expects to return against Bobcats

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

After missing four games with what he revealed was bronchitis, Knicks center Tyson Chandler expects to return on Tuesday night in Charlotte and play limited minutes.

“Get some minutes [Tuesday] and practice Wednesday,’’ Chandler said, prior to the Knicks 98-96 OT win over the Phoenix Suns. “That would be ideal.’’

The Knicks had been calling Chandler’s issue an upper respiratory infection, but the 7-foot-1 center called it bronchitis.

“It was obviously serious,’’ Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. “He was in the bed for a while. Now he’s up and around. We’ll see how he feels [Tuesday] and go from there.’’

Chandler missed time at the end of last season with strep throat and it has been reported that his children may have contributed to his various illnesses.

“I don’t think so,’’ he said when asked if he’s susceptible to getting ill. “I had only gotten sick twice before I came to New York in my career. It could be certain people around me making me sick.’’

The Knicks have won five straight and are 6-1 in 2014, but play four games in five nights this week.

After Charlotte, they visit Indiana Thursday and host Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Clippers Friday.

Having Chandler to battle Roy Hibbert on Thursday and then Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan Friday should help the team’s defensive efforts.

Welcome back Tyson. I was amazed how well the team rebounded with him out. But we can always use Tyson's defense and intensity. But, loving this 5 game winning streak - in fact, in the earlier part of the season, we would have blown the Pistons and Suns games. We still have to learn how to put games away but keep on rollin' Knickerbockers!

Hey Biggie, I'm waiting on you to finally admit how we are not better than last year and we won't win as many games!   You can write it on a napkin and let Biggie Rewrite post it here if you like.

It will be interesting to see how Woody uses Bargnani and Amar'e with Chandler back. You would have to assume that K-Mart gets a reduced load, just to preserve him for the post season. It seems logical that you would pair Chandler-Bargnani and K-Mart-Amar'e as an offense-defense tandem.

If Woody "goes big" and uses Melo primarily at the 3, he will also have to figure out how he handles the minutes for Felton, Prigioni, Murry, JR, THJR, and Shump. Good problems to have.

Yeah cause having Chandler to "battle" Roy Hibbert after he came back from being sick last season was a big help!

With the Carmelo-Amare tandem picking up steam, will be interesting to see if Tyson's 15 ft jumper becomes a reliable scoring weapon for the season's remainder.  Would be a huge help.

What's interesting to me is that the reason for the struggles from the beginning of the season was the absence of Chandler. Yet here is the team winning without him.

So wtf happened?

Hibbert says "That's cool. Chandler only needs a game or two back so I can man handle like in the playoffs!. I hope he didn't lose any more weight because I can't be responsible for throwing around rag dolls gently!"

@Jerry GeeYou are so off base on the Rondo isn't known for playing defense, apparently your BBall IQ isn't to high, Rondo 2011-2012 second team all defense, 2009-2010 first team all nba defense, 2008-2009 first team all defensive

@Jerry Gee

Rondo is a Celtic and signed for next year. It is a fantasy that Ainge will deal Rondo to a division rival.

@Knicks_FanaticChandler stays in or near the paint and that allows his man to come over and provide help on STATues if needed on offense.  STATues usually suck when he's in with Chandler and our defense sucks when STATues is in with Chandler.  Pick your poison!

@Brian Webster

In fairness, Chandler and K-Mart were our bigs battling Hibbert, West, Mahinmi, and Psycho T. It is a team sport and we were undersized, leading the team to "go big" with Bargnani and adding Tyler and Aldrich.

@moneyballI'd rather trade Chandler than Shump, can you imagine the backcourt defense..we can dream..however C's want to tank so they have no use for Chandler

@NYKnickerBockerHow about we were just playing like sh#t no excuses! Now we're playing better for the last 8 games.  We can stay this way or go back to playing like sh#t, it's on our team.

New rule....

If Kemba Walker takes out another one of our players, we get Kemba Walker on our team.

@xmenreturn Chandler's presence down low also makes it hard for Bargs to do anything in the low-post with Chandler on the weakside and the other low post drive lane left open in case Melo chooses to drive.

Chandler's return may help the defense, but it causes offense problems in terms of spacing and room for the offensive players to operate. Chandler is best with a jump-shooting offense.

Yeah. Especially Shump has made a big difference. Kmart always gave you something but health was the issue with him.

It just looks like the "Chandler is out" excuse wasn't so valid in retrospect.

@BiggieSmallsLOL  STATues has been playing better but he's still a liability on defense and when we play better teams like Indy, he will not provide much help.
