Eye Test: NBA big for sure.  Has the requisite athleticism.  Needs to prove he can get in great shape.

Athleticism: Yancy has some nice bounce for a man as big as he is.  I think it’s a little troubling that he weighed in at 287 at the PIT when he was listed at 260 at Cincinatti.  Yancy has a nice back to the basket game but just like most college big men struggles defensively.  He often disappears from games.

Comps: I think the perfect model for Yancy to follow would be Udonis Haslem.  Haslem came out of Florida a skilled but overweight big.  Spent I believe 1 year in Europe getting his body right and is now a guy who will have a 10+ year career in the NBA.

Tommy says: I wrote this during the tournament and saw Gates at Portsmouth. That’s a difficult showcase for big men and Gates did struggle with the pace but as Ryan points out I do very much find him an NBA big. Can he contribute right away? I would doubt it, but after some seasoning if he maintains focus, I can see him having a productive and long NBA career.
