Getting To Know James White

In July the Knicks agreed to a one year deal with James White.

The 6-7, 200 pound foward was a member of the San Antonion Spurs and Houston Rockets during the 2006-07 and 2008-09 seasons, but has only played in ten games.

For the past two years White competed in Lega Basket Serie A, the highest level of club competition in Italian professional basketball.

He led the league in 2010-11 with Dinamo Sassari, averaging 21.0 points per game  and was top three in 2011-12 with Pesaro, averaging 17.1 points per game. White also has the ability to be a complete player as he averaged five rebounds, three assists, and two steals per game.White is a solid free throw shooter. He led the Italian league in free throws made.

In 2001, White was one of the best high school players in the country who earned the nickname “Flight 75″ for his leaping ability.

He was named to the McDonald’s All-American team along with Tyson Chandler, who was drafted second overall by the Bulls that year.

I haven’t seen much of James White, but I think he has a chance to play an important role on this Knicks squad. We all know what to expect from proven guys like Anthony and Chandler, but obviously White is more of a wildcard. The downside is that he has little NBA experience so we can’t expect much. On the other hand he is a versatile player and every good team needs that unexpected spark off the bench. Last year Steve Novak and Jeremy Lin were the two guys to give the Knicks that boost. Gerald Green’s performance with New Jersey last season is a fair comparison for what White can do for New York this year.
