2013-14 Report Card: Carmelo Anthony

Anthony

Harris Decker

Offense

Carmelo Anthony put together a masterful offensive season. He was dominant at times, scoring 27.4 points per game, second only to Kevin Durant, who is likely headed for his first MVP Award. Anthony carried a Knicks team that, at times, was completely inept. We saw it time after time when he would sit early in the season. It would become a passing game around the outside with no player able to penetrate and create a shot the way Anthony does. This season will be looked upon as a failure but it’s not because of Anthony’s lack of trying. He worked and worked until the Knicks were statistically eliminated.

A part of his game that really developed this year was his rebounding. It was more out of necessity than anything but early in the year, with Tyson Chandler and Amar’e Stoudemire banged up, Anthony went on a rebounding frenzy. He recorded 22 games with 10 or more rebounds and finished the season pulling down 8.1 per game, a career high.

Defense

Defense has never been a strength for Anthony. Watching him play through this season it was obvious that he had worked to get better in one-on-one matchups with other elite scorers. He was able to hold his own and even better than that at times. He came close to his career high in steals per game and set a new career mark for blocks. We never go out to watch Anthony play defense but it was nice to see the effort from him throughout the season.

Team Play

This is the area of Anthony’s game that regressed in 2013-14. Anthony has always been a shoot first, second and third guy, but it seemed at points of this season that he was so locked in on scoring that he was leaving wide open teammates standing and waiting. While he was hot most of the year, there were nights in which he couldn’t find his shot and instead of looking to pass out of hard doubles, he continued to shoot and leave his teammates waiting. Anthony recorded just over 3 assists per game. If there was something that could push Anthony to the next level it’s his ability to draw double teams and then pass out to open shooters.

Trend

Despite not winning a second consecutive scoring title, Anthony is still trending upward as he hits 30 (turns 30 on May 29). He was able to score 27.4 points per game without much help for most of the first half. Think about that. Scoring is hard enough. He was scoring when every person in the building new he’d be taking a huge amount of shots. Anthony worked harder than at any point in his career for his shots and it was sad to imagine what this season may have looked like with a more motivated cast around him.

Brooks will be gone is the Griz take them out.

How the hell your P.G takes 26 shots, i expect that from a player playing on a expansion team or a rebuilding team, it's all on brooks, his plan is let Durant and Westbrook take 70% of the shots

Respect.. imo they are overrated and this will help them.

The good thing about the Knicks missing the playoffs is that it has given every fan in NY an opportunity to realize what good basketball is about and how bad our team was. Hopefully, Phil Jackson will bring order and respectability back to our sorry-ass franchise.

You guys talk about the YouTube vid of James Hardens off ball defense..??

lmaooo. .....worse than Novak

and yes when I was upset with Melo I was pro harden /asik for Melo /Chandler (hypothetically )

uunlike many, I can actually admit when I'm wrong. I was wrong. But Chandler still stinks.

@OLDKNICK  Agreed but isn't Melo leaving to chase a ring some where else a leap of faith as well? I'm not sure trusting D-Rose to stay healthy to make a championship run is a smart idea at this point. He could potentially be going to a partially gutted Bulls team (if he goes via sign and trade) with an injured D-Rose.

Phi Jackson is NOT asking that Carmelo take any sort of "leap of faith".

Phil Jackson is doing something very simple: letting Carmelo know that the Knicks can't assemble a good team while Melo takes up 30% of the salary cap.

And that's the truth.

Phil Jackson is a smart guy and he knows Carmelo is not a player New York can build around - his game and leadership are lacking. He is a specialist, a great scorer and not much more.

Carmelo has an agent and plenty of lawyers giving him sensible advice. He will do what is best for him. I hope phil Jackson does what is best for The Knicks.

Perhas a happy medium can be reached - my idea of it is 3 years at 15 millions per, with optout clause for both parties on the third year.

@OLDKNICK  Melo has been playing a lot of Chess lately his words may be bit of a diversion

whatever Phil has planned Melo knows but why act ecstatic about it

he was humbled in NY but look what his name did in New York.

his overall star power has went up and his brand

Lala's Brand went up too

he can leave and chase the ring or he can have the lord of the rings show him how to attain one

i think the selling pitch to Melo will be a Jordan and Kobe vouch of how Phil will take him to the promise land

@OLDKNICK A to the Men! That is basically What I have been trying to say.  It's asking a lot of Melo to take less money, play for a rookie coach maybe and not have any help next year hoping that Phil will not make him the escape goat if he does not work well in the triangle and etc.

If he is not so stuck on making the most money, he will be gone!

@dagawd A to the Men!  That's totally crazy when he has so much talent around him!

@lobcity  I think Phil is fronting more by acting like it's not a one person race lol.

@Marvel  I never seen what the hype was about with them. Maybe it's the Duke system? In theory this will make them better but I think Duke has a highly rated pg and sg coming in next season so minutes may be hard to come by.

@Marvel  In that video Harden makes Novak look like Tony Allen lol.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@Marvel LOL So you think Harden,Melo and Howard would win a ring?  The Big O is telling a little lie!

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@madskills @OLDKNICK True but Melo can see what help has has to the team is going to!

You're asking Melo to resign here for no more help next year, change his game to fit the triangle, play for a new coach, hope Phil gets players in 2015+, not trade him if he sees Melo's not a fit and etc.

madskills
madskills

@knickster  Agreed but Melo isn't taking a 3yr deal imo. I think you would have to give him 5yrs with an opt out after 2 or 3 years.

@knickster  Anyone with a brain that functions well knows MelO is not a player to build around.

@xmenreturn That's what i said to my friend lastnite, westbook is a good player but he can't be running your Point

@madskills @MarvelLMAO!  I needed that one!

xmenreturn

@knickster He''ll sign for 1 year if he can't get his money.  The Bulls and even us have big money in 2015 available.

Like in any negotiation, Melo is free to go somewhere else. Let's see where he can get more than 90 millions for 5 years.

I say he has near ZERO chance of having his cake and eating it, too: he wants money, he wants to win and he wants a big market. ZERO chance of getting all that.

Melo has been exposed by all the attention that comes with playing for the biggest market on earth.

@kingofny

"There's no doubt about Carmelo being one of the top scorers in the league, maybe the best individual isolation player in the game. I have no problem with committing to saying Carmelo is in the future plans. There are a number of things I see Carmelo doing as he moves forward, and I think Carmelo, as great a player as he is, still has another level he can go to. I hope together with the team we create that he can get there." - Phil Jackson on his impressions of Carmelo Anthony and the team's future with him.

"We know that we need another solid contributor, someone that can score to HELP Carmelo go along." - Phil Jackson on looking ahead to free agency over the next two summers.

@xmenreturn @KnickelusKnickleby  Phil commands respect in general. Look how the team started playing once the rumors started that he was coming lol. He had dudes talking more on defense over the next few games then they did all season.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@KnickelusKnickleby It helps but it's not the same.  It's like your dad telling you to do something vs giving your brother the reins to tell you to do something.

Phil command respect on the sidellines!

madskills

@xmenreturn @KnickelusKnickleby  Hence the reason why Kerr is supposedly the front runner. He will be essentially coaching through Kerr. That's why he wants someone he knows and trust.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@madskills Yep, Let's pray Gino doesn't pull a Sanchez. He needs to keep improving big time.

madskills

@xmenreturn @dagawd  Agreed. We need another receiver and to sure up that secondary. Hopefully Milliner comes back better.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@dagawd Yeah Jets should be a little better this year. I hope we can get another decent receiver!

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@dagawd That's what I truly think!  Yet the suspense on Melo is still there.

I'm intrigued how this will go!  Either that or hope my Mets stay above .500!  I better prepare for the former.

dagawd
dagawd

@xmenreturn  The knicks will be fine X without MelO, they might have a bad 2014-15 season but things will be Bright moving forward and Phil knows this

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@dagawd I truly hope so., I'm ready to give Phil some time to get his plan together.  That is why I don't won't him to do a Isiah and bring on highly risky players for STATues contract next year.

Let STATues contract run out like we should have done for Ewing unless he can fleece a GM for something grand.

dagawd
dagawd

@xmenreturn  It's going to work Phil has a good plan and it's win and Winner, the win is MelO taking less the Winner is the knicks if he leaves

madskills
madskills

@xmenreturn  Couldn't Melo wait until after next season to become a free agent to eliminate some of the "leap of faith"? Then again, with that shoulder tearing at the end of every season he's probably trying to get paid now and I can't blame him.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@dagawd @xmenreturnLOL I agree!  I truly think Phil is going to do this his way period!   It may not work in the end but it will be his way!

As a fan, I don't mind taking that leap of faith in Phil.  As Melo, I think not

dagawd
dagawd

@xmenreturn  Without a doubt, Westbrook doesn't seem to be a smart guy

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@dagawd @xmenreturnNot doing that for sure.   There is too much talent and you would think that with him watching how well that team ran without him this year, he would come back with some better insight on using his teammates.

Westbrook has come back trying to make up for any scoring he lost while out!

If Scott doesn't address this soon, he will be on a boat ride like Woody!

@BiggieTKB  My bad, I was thinking about Parker leaving while typing lol. Maybe it's the Kentucky system. Th only thing I've seen the twins do was knock down some big shots in the tournament.

@Marvel D12 is already upset he isn't getting much touches with MelO he would be lucky if he grabbed a rebound
