Bulls to “exhaust” all assets while making a run at Carmelo Anthony?

As Carmelo Anthony toys with the idea of leaving the Big Apple this summer, the Bulls are expected to be one of the top teams he considers instead. The interest is mutual, as Chicago is expected to “exhaust”most of their assets in an effort to improve the team.  (Crowley, June 15).

Keith Schlosser, Lead Writer

As fate would have it, Anthony just happens to stand tall as this coming summer’s top free agent prize, should he opt out of his current contract with New York.

Like the Knicks, the Bulls fell way short of the initial mark at landing one of the most prized free agents (LeBron James and Chris Bosh were among the most notable ones) back in the summer of 2010. The Knicks settled for Amar’e Stoudemire, whereas Chicago signed Carlos Boozer.

Carmelo Anthony

Fast-forward to 2014, and Boozer’s contract is set to be an expiring one next season. With there being mutual interest between Chicago and Anthony, Boozer’s contract could prove to be a major piece of a potential puzzle that becomes a sign & trade deal involving Anthony heading off to the Windy City.

Well-known Knickerbocker killer Mike Dunleavy’s contract is also expiring, and the Bulls happen to own draft picks that could be of interest to New York. Whereas this year’s draft will take place well before Chicago can legally have a conversation with the Brooklyn native, future draft selections should always be appealing to the Knicks, a team still desperate for picks in the years ahead.

The bad news is that the Bulls would be a rather sensible and feasible landing spot for Anthony, and there certainly appears to be mutual interest. The silver lining in this situation is that the Bulls are poised to wheel and deal for the star’s services.

Surely, the Knicks could stand to benefit from this. But don’t expect the Bulls to go about negotiating with Phil Jackson and co. all too desperately. With Anthony in the driver’s seat with regard to his fate, Chicago would appear to have the upper hand.

They may be willing to sacrifice assets, but the fact of the matter is the Bulls likely won’t have to give up the farm in order for the Knicks to be ready to play ball. Should Anthony be raring to leave, it’ll be in New York’s best interests to get what they can and begin to plan for the future instead.

LET MELO WALK:

Just how good is Anthony? It’s hard to find consensus. Some count him among the best in the NBA and perhaps the best one-on-one scorer in the league. He has a top-10 player efficiency rating and two Olympic gold medals. There just aren’t guys with his kind of size and strength who can handle and shoot the ball like a guard. In the right scenario, he’s deadly. With his quick, accurate release and great first step, covering him on a hard closeout is pretty much impossible. He is a monster on the offensive glass and has been one of the best scorers as a pick-and-roll ball handler for the past two years. It’s a rare combination.

Others are less charitable. They see a player who dies on screens, is overeager to switch and treats defense in general like a personal inconvenience. He’s a volume scorer who traffics in volume statistics, but less so in wins, and doesn’t create a ton of opportunities for others.

Is there any player debated more than Melo being a #1 or #2 option? LOL.

Those "stop snitching" videos really got people upset years ago.

Looking at the Atlantic Division for 2014-15. the Raptors seems to be in the best shape of any team right. The Sixers and Celtics are rebuilding. The Knicks and Nets are soon to engage in rebuilding. The Raptors are coming off a 48 win season and have their core intact, except for free agent Kyle Lowry. No one could have seen that coming a year ago. They have several unguaranteed contracts and could remain atop the Atlantic next season.

OT The US patent office has just cancelled the trademark for the Redskins, as the name has been viewed as disparaging. This is the result of a suit brought by Native Americans.

so if phil gets melo to resign he got his man and didn't strike out but if melo leaves it will be because phil didn't really want him and want to start from scratch??? correct?

Tony Fonseca

Rumors are that there is a power struggle between Phil and Melo. Melo does not think that Phil is showing him the love and respect that a superstar like him should command. Also, he thinks that Phil is cornering him to opt in or take a pay cut for the good of the organization when Phil just inked a 60 Million contract. Phil strongly believes that he is Melo's option to win a chip.. I guess clash of egos here.

Melo has been a star, put up great individual numbers, all star selections every year, scoring titles, Olympic medals,  but has not won that eluding chip.

Phil has won 11 chips in 18 year coaching (9 with Bulls and 9 with the bulls. That is 61% winning percentage

Digging deeper, the NBA has been a monopoly among Phil 11 chips, Pop 5 chips, and Riley 3 chips in the past 23 years. Only Houston 2, Detroit 1, and Dallas 1 have upset the trend.

Now, if you had to chose between Phil and Melo, which one do you choose?

@OLDKNICK That was sooo good. Metta is really a cool guy. He could've cursed that guy out but he was really patient.

The article really points out why Melo states he wants to win. Until Melo leads a team deep into the playoffs and wins a ring, the questions will remain. LeBron faced the same doubts until he went to Miami. That is why the Bulls are attractive. They have the rim protector in Noah, the wing defender in Butler, and the secondary star in Rose.

@MeloStat301 Melo is that dude but he needs to get better in order to win. He should stay

Not that it really means anything, so don't read too much into it.

14-7 STAT as a starter, 15.7 ppg

12-32 STAT off the bench

You can spin it whatever way you want. Melo will make a decision and only he will truly know why.

@Tony Fonseca I don't believe a word of this... Melo is not this naive... First of all I'm sure he knows your boss ALWAYS makes more money than you AND Phil ' s paycheck DOES NOT affect the team and retooling as his does... BTW Phil EARNED his paycheck ... 11 CHAMPIONSHIPS... Melo is no foo... COME ON MAN...

#drivel

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Knicks_Fanatic @MeloStat301  If melo goes anywhere else, and wins..lets say bulls...you can bet the media will spin it as if Noah is the superstar and Melo is his sidekick...as ridiculous as that sounds.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Kvdaone @MeloStat301  I see Melo as described above. the defense criticism is a bit harsh. Melo is a rare talent and mismatch at both ends of the floor.

On the offense no one can guard him. He will post up the SF all day and he will bring PF to perimeter and school them. He is perhaps the most complete offensive player in the game. He would be great for the triangle but needs to look to pass more

On defense he is not quick enough anymore to guard SF and not strong enough to bang with the PF every play. He can only be best used at system defense. Running through screens and pounding of big men wears him down...

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Sandro Guedes @Knicks_Fanatic  That team would still be creamed. This notion that draft picks are the best way of building a winning franchise is flawed at best!!!

Draft picks are dreams and good point of discussion. The problem with draft picks are: most of them are 19 older kids and will take a long time to develop after several years of losing and mental and physical wear and tear.

when they gain experience in 5 years, they are free agents and they move on to greener pastures.

IMO, teams with that strategy have become farm systems for smarter teams.

Please name one team that won a chip relying heavily on draft picks

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@thatsagoodpoint @Knicks_Fanatic

Obviously they need to sign or replace Lowry. They will have cap space and still have a very solid team in place. Right now, I'd say they are still favorites to win the division.

@mrdullah @Tony Fonseca  Folks, just don't forget that Phil is the same guy that demanded Kobe to be trade from the LAKERS.. When it did not happen he quitted. So it is very possible for him to envision a Knicks without Melo.

Tony Fonseca

@mrdullah @Tony Fonseca  That's is why I said rumors.. Michael Wallace has reported that and SAS has been all over the same for months. I guess all of you have listened to SAS quoting sources from Melo camp.

When you win, nothing else matters. Boris Diaw and Kawhi Leonard were probably the best players on the court for the Spurs against Miami. It doesn't detract from Timmy, Manu, and Tony.

@thatsagoodpoint @Kvdaone @MeloStat301 Agreed. His mentality about hte game has to change. I believe Phil and Fish have the power, discipline and system to make it happen but like you said...he has to be fully committed

@Tony Fonseca @mrdullah  I have been watching first take for months and SAS has not mentioned this at all the only thing he has said is that melo would rather phil come down and coach him that's the only thing he has said regarding them two

MeloStat301

@Knicks_Fanatic  Its not what I'm getting at, I'm getting at the bias that there is on "palyers like melo"..if u know what I mean.  Obviously if he wins a chip I doubt he cares if he is #1 2 or 3..u know.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@thatsagoodpoint @Tony Fonseca @Sandro Guedes @Knicks_Fanatic  San Antonio is not a good example. They have draft well but they never had 3 rookies on the starting line up. They always had a combo of vets and young talent. Sixers is not going to win with 3 players under 21 on the starting line up. This is not college, this is the NBA - GROWN AZZ MAN GAME!!!!!

Back when the Knicks won in 1970 and 1973, no one argued whether it was Clyde's team or Willis' team. It was a team. People speculated that the Pearl and Clyde couldn't play together. The media will do what they do. Melo right now looks much like Dominique Wilkins, great player, no rings. He wants to be more than that.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@thatsagoodpoint @Sandro Guedes @Knicks_Fanatic

I don't dispute that young players and draft picks are truly valuable. Yet it takes some time for them to develop. Players don't reach their peak performance years until ages 24-25. Look at DeMar Derozan, speaking of the Raptors. It took him 4 years to become an All-Star.

Maybe I'm overrating Uriji, but I expect him to improve the team for 2014-15.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@theking @Mel Brown  I guess tweed SAS. Per SAS, Melo was very upset when Phil said that "Melo should stay to his word and take a pay cut".... Melo was not happy that Phil said that If Melo stays great, and if Melo leaves is great.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@thatsagoodpoint @Tony Fonseca @Sandro Guedes @Knicks_Fanatic  Thunder has won some and the main reason they have not won a chip is lack of VETERAN leadership. Also they have not kept the big 3 of Durant Harden and Westbrook. They have been forced to trade Harden because of $$$$ reason!!!! My point is even more illustrated by your response..

Art Perez
Art Perez

@Tony Fonseca Phil said " I HOPE Melo stays true to his word and take a pay cut....." which reads VASTLY different from SHOULD... the power of words... changes the context of things all of the time.. this is manipulation at its finest...

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@thatsagoodpoint @Knicks_Fanatic

Uriji managed to trade his two best players, Rudy and Bargnani, develop his draft picks, and win a division. That seems to be a balanced and reasonable approach.

Philly should find gold in one or two of those rookies. They will still need to build a team around them. That will be the hard part.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@thatsagoodpoint @Tony Fonseca @Sandro Guedes @Knicks_Fanatic  Please respect my eyes, Thunder was never going to beat the Spurs.

My answer will be Knicks and I hope I am not bias. Players don't win championships, organizations DO!!!!

Thunder will look completely different in 5 years and the Knicks will too. Based on results, I have the greatest mind running the Knicks. Phil 11 chips in 18 years. Thunder: big FAT ZERO and a lot of hype!!!

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Sandro Guedes @Tony Fonseca @thatsagoodpoint @Knicks_Fanatic  They can have talent but they have not developed the body for the NBA wear and tear nor they have the experience... It takes time to learn the trades and how to be successful in the nba...

Sandro, in ALL or ANY sports, you cannot win with only young talent.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@thatsagoodpoint @Knicks_Fanatic

Our Knicks will have to wait a year until Phil can make any real moves. I'd assume he will do exactly as you say, balanced and reasonable. But even that approach doesn't guarantee success. We need a bit of luck as well.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@thatsagoodpoint @Tony Fonseca @Sandro Guedes @Knicks_Fanatic  Great point. For now you are right. OKC is in better situation than us.. If, a big IF, In 5 years OKC keeps the same star power, Durant will be 30, Westbrook 30, Ibaka 30, Melo 35, Lebron 34, Wade 37 Duncan 43, Parker 37... The point is that the NBA will be completely different in 5 years and the balance of power will be changed...

I am betting on Phil, Riley, and Pop to keep dominating this monopoly they created.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Knicks_Fanatic @thatsagoodpoint  Knicks will compete with the current roster if Melo stays. Not sure about championship but they will win more than 50 games!!!!

We have bad contracts, an unbalanced team, but we have some talent here

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@knicksgirl35 @Sandro Guedes  Sandro your response is the big flaw in here!!!! I bet you my hard savings to this date that it will not be their line up in 2020. So argument is NOT valid

As I said, teams that have solely adapt the "rebuilding" plan (I call it losing plan) have become farm system for the savvies.

mrdullah
mrdullah

@thatsagoodpoint @knicksgirl35 which is EXACTLY what you'll be doing going the draft route... homeboy... EXACTLY... the only difference is one way we have a CHANGE and the other is not expected to do ANYTHING...

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@thatsagoodpoint @knicksgirl35  I don't think so... Knicks will be in the hunt for the chip in the next 5 years!!! Again, Phil would not come here without a complete road map to get there. It is easier to do in the current CBA and free agency.

knicksgirl35
knicksgirl35

@thatsagoodpoint Ofcourse that's not okay with me but I believe with some creativity Phil and Fish will be able to do special things a lot sooner than that. That is if Mel stays.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@thatsagoodpoint @Tony Fonseca @knicksgirl35 @Sandro Guedes  That is the point, you can plan on drafting until the cows come home, but you are not keeping them in Philly, Minny, Cleveland, Orlando, Toronto, Golden State, and the list goes on, and on. Here is some notables exodus: Shaq, D12, Lebron, Barkley, Garnett, Camby, Carter, MacGrady, soon to be Love, Kyrie... And again, the list goes on and on!!!
