Clippers pulled out of Shumpert deal just before deadline

Shortly before the trade deadline, the Knicks were under the impression that a deal to send Iman Shumpert to the Clippers for point guard Darren Collison was all but done (Broussard).

But the Clippers backed out at the last second, and reports are the Clippers may have been posturing the entire time in an effort to keep Shumpert from being dealt to Oklahoma City.

If you recall last year, we sent Brewer to OKC for a 2nd round pick. I'd assume that that's what they probably offered up for Shump as well. Hard to imagine they would give up a 1st round pick. They have been hitting home runs in the late first round with Ibaka and Reggie Jackson.

Shtload of players are getting bought out. Hope at least some can clear waivers, then we can watch our FO stand pat and be negligent once again.

shump is fragile. he hurt himself the last three times by doing regular stuff out there--nobody touched him. 3 times? it's a real shame. people like shump because he's dark, big and cut. not all guys who look like that are beasts. shump doesn't work hard enough.

Look, the media just loves a knicks-look-like-fools story, and there have been plenty this year.

But I am not buying this. The Clips thought enough of Shump to play a game to keep him out of OKC, but not enough of him to trade a guy like Collison? I don't think so.

The deal falling through was more about Shump's knee than any gamesmanship by the Clippers. Doc Rivers has seen Shump enough to know what he could do in his rotation. Doc is calling the shots on this one, no doubt. The diagnosis came through right at the trade deadline. The Clippers were probably reluctant to pull the trigger on damaged goods. When you are trying to make a run at an NBA, you can't afford to make a mistake.

Shump needs to play more and sing less, focus on basketball game. hes not shaq

That hurt the knicks for getting the pick they needed from the OKC to make the Rondo trade happened. Can't put this on Mills and Donlan

The New York Knicks thought they had a deal done at the deadline with the Los Angeles Clippers centered upon Iman Shumpert for Darren Collison.

The Clippers decided against making the trade at the last minute.

Sources believe the Clippers may have been posturing to keep Shumpert from being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Mills: "Hey Dolan, maybe we should sign Big baby Davis?

Dolan: "Who?"

Mills: "Yea...him..listen...we sign him..Rondo would come play w us to play alongside his former teammate..and Melo stays"

Dolan:  "Melo stays??!?!  Yes!!"...hangs up phone and continues to jack up ticket prices over 30%

Having used too many assets on the Barg deal,  we had a very weak bargaining position.   Are we entitled to get an injury exception for Bargs.  If so maybe we could sign Glen Davis.

@Biggie

To be fair, Shumpert's injury really complicated the situation. His MRI was done hours before the trade deadline. Tough decision for the Clippers to make.

@bigdishing  Getting Shumpert in OKC in the missing pieces for them that could help take on Miami or Pacers. GM around the league like Shumpert and feel Woodson is not using him right

@M&M; Consultants  If this is true - why would they holdout on OKC for Collison, if OKC was offering a 1st? I think OKC's interest was made to be more than it actually was.

@dagawd Then that is on Mills . . . he should have set a hard deadline for the Clipps to approve/reject (say 2:30) and tell them he's got a backup deal lined up if this falls through.  This is negotiations 101.  You don't put all of your eggs in one basket.

Everyone always plays like they are interested in playing for NY teams as FA's to raise their market value.  Why can't the Knicks use the leverage of other teams intestested in Shump  to get what we want or at least not waste the deadline without a contingency plan?  This happened with the Udrich to Denver deal too.  They waited too long and it cost them. It sounds like bad negotiating skills to be honest.

@Elvis Maduro repost from an article posed by OLD KNICK:

“Not a big fan,’’ said one NBA executive. “He’s not a good shooter. Is he a stopper or just a good defender? His performances are all over the place. He’s an OK rotation player on maybe a playoff team, but on Indiana or Miami, he wouldn’t even play.’’

In addition, one NBA scout said of Shumpert’s disappointing third season in which he is shooting 37 percent and averaging 6.9 points: “He’s average. He plays very hard, but he’s average.’’

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Knicks_Fanatic @Biggie Then why this report?  Clips could have easily said "didn't want to risk shump being hurt"...Makes no sense fanatic...they played us like a Guitar...Jimmy Dolans guitar..Shump is not highly regarded around the league, regardless what you or I think.

bigdishing

@M&M; Consultants @bigdishing  If OKC thinks Shump is the missing piece, then they are the ones who got played. After all, Clips and OKC are legit contenders. We are a lottery team. We missed out on Collison? yawn.

@Ian Carvalho   Because this would have help them move chandler so they could pick up the second pick for this years draft. Boston wanted to 2 first round picks this year and knicks also had to move felton for cap and his bad play, One of previous post the other day i said Mills was working on picks and would shock everyone. This missed up everything

Are you saying his injury was no factor? Of course not.

Let's investigate here.Broussard got his information from a source. That source surely puts Dolan Mills in a bad light. If true, that person had to be within the Knicks' circle because of the claim that there were two deals for Shump in the pipeline.

Clearly that leak would likely be from the Shump camp. His agent did request a trade last January because of Shump being misused and played out of position. He is still being played out of position. Shump is due for his next contract and clearly a change of scenery would be beneficial. So I'd assume that's a good guess on Broussard's source and why it was given to him.

@M&M; Consultants @barnaby87@M&M; ConsultantsMost deals from yesterday aren't finalized yet because of physicals.  Shump wouldn't have taken his physical until today, therefore, no, not enough turn around time.  The Danny Granger trade isn't even finalized yet.

@brookdon No True. I thought Ewing would even have been more dominant on defense coming out of Gtown.  Yet Ewing became a force on offense more instead.

Where u at the garden when Ewing came here and we were really bad?  We all used to yell CATCH, TURN, SHOOT when Ewing was to get the ball. He was sooooo robotic.

As a center, Ewing could have went to the rim more in the clutch instead of relying on the fadeaway jumper.

Ewing was a warrior but guys like MJ and Bird were just too smart and knew when to elevate their game and team in the clutch. They also got all the f###king calls too. lol

You make it sound like Carmelo is the only player never to have won a ring lol.

Melo should really pay you a fee for such defense.

When Melo is 50 showing off his Syracuse ring, he better make sure MJ, Magic Kobe and others are not around.

@xmenreturn @MeloStat301 Melo has won at every stage of his BASKETBALL career, only idiots and media trolls question if hes a "leader"

Case in point..who has tim hardaway jr said help him in the NBA?  That's right Melo.

Hardaway owns a distinct advantage compared to most rookies entering year one.  The former Michigan standout is the son of former NBA star point guard Tim Hardaway and the advice he can offer about playing in the league and surviving a rookie season is invaluable.  However, there’s something to be said about a teammate that is regarded as one of the elite scorers in the NBA with six all-star appearances on his resume.

“With Melo, he’s just teaching me everything, making the process a lot easier,” Hardaway smiled.  “We are always laughing and joking but at the same time he is making sure I get everything on point and make sure I’m ready for the season.”

Please stop Lol...you sound like ESPN.

@MeloStat301 True but he had to go oversees and that alone hopefully matures a person. Shump is not  bad guy. He just needs good coaching for starters. It's not like woody has answers for what he needs to do

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@MeloStat301 @xmenreturn  Agreed about Shump. He had a solid rookie season and let himself get carried away over the hype.

That said, we have no idea what happened with Tyler in his time overseas or how he dealt with trying to make teams, whether it was through workouts or summer camp.

Maybe he had advice, maybe he didn't, but he's definitely gone through a lot more than Shump in terms of consistency, continuty, and sacrifice.

xmenreturn

@carl hill Totally B.S.  Shump is not a star.   He's a young player that can play defense but our dumb coach even takes that away from him with the dumb switching.

THJr is new like Shump was. After a few years, we would expect more from him under Woody too and he most likely would be just as lost.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@xmenreturn @MeloStat301 Xmen...he played 43 games overseas for crying out loud...and coming out of high school was one of the top prospects projects =, he even commited to Louisville.  He didn't have "leadership" to lead and motivate him...he struggled worked hard, and hes here now, and doesn't feel entitled.  Shump feels entitled....problem is..he shouldn't feel that way.

@MeloStat301 @VerySilentJay @carl hill @Elvis Maduro

Nope, no cop out, it just speaks about the inconsistency both of the player and coaching.

It speaks about how Tyler has learned from his past mistakes and now is putting it all on the line trying to stay in the NBA.

Timmy has the influence of his father, a savvy vet who knows the game inside and out, which clearly has turned Timmy into a pro with strong work ethic and strong mentality.

These are the types of players we could use more and more.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@MeloStat301 LMAO! You make every excuses for Melo and he's been in the league for decade and you can't cut a very young player some slack who has been misused by a bad coach?

Ok. the next Melo doesn't lead a team anywhere, please do you do a cop out. lol

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@MeloStat301 @VerySilentJay @Elvis Maduro  Right now the team's a mess, and those that remain hungry and fight through the tough times (which have been all season long) will look like true pros, something you can directly apply to Timmy as well.

Some players have that mentality and personality to find motivation by themselves, while others truly appreciate having leaders that put in the work and help you develop, both as a player and individual.

That said, Shump's attitude, even before this season, speaks plenty about his mental fortitude.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@MeloStat301 Tyler has been playing overseas and he had no expectations but to just make it in the NBA.

Shump was our #1 pick and he did well his first year or at least showed promise. Everybody is different but a good coach would have taken this guy under his wings. Woody is bad for a young player period.

Thank God THjr has a father who is still involved and played at a very high level in the NBA.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@carl hill @MeloStat301 @VerySilentJay @Elvis Maduro

Please, if you have strong leadership and influence on your team, it goes a long way when it comes to remaining positive through tough stretches, especially when those influencers are future HOF players and legends.

Many players will appreciate and thrive off of that leadership and extra motivation. Ask players about great NBA motivators and they'll be the first to tell which coaches out there really get the most out of you.

That same leadership comes from players willing to give you advice about issues regarding your game or personality.

Obviously said players needs to be mature enough to comprehend and apply these teachings, but the influence of leadership and strong locker room presence goes a long way.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@MeloStat301 @VerySilentJay @Elvis Maduro  That goes to show the kid's personality and readiness to be an impact player or live up to their potential.

Like I said, coaching is key, but a kid's attitude is even more important.

If you put in the work, remain mature, and keep a positive attitude despite the team's struggles, you'll be fine.

Work ethic and maturity go a long when trying to grow and develop as a player.

And if you wanna talk about Tyler, just check his past and how much it took him to get where he is today.

It's a two way process imo.

This is the NBA not NCAA...people get called out on mistakes all the time, especially if your a young player..his ego got bruised, and its.."im not gonna play hard now.."..thats not right.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@MeloStat301 @VerySilentJay @Elvis Maduro  You can easily argue that the influence Kidd, Sheed, and KT had on Shumpert was very important for Shump to have a good season. Because as soon as those left, the team fell apart.

I do think his attitude and immaturity also have played a factor in his strong decline in play.

Always sulking, moaning, complaining, letting trade talks affect his game, and asking for a role of his liking when he should be lucky to be starting... Obviously plays a role.

But it can't be easy having a coach that has no issues blaming losses on you or calling you publicly, especially if you haven't matured as a pro.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Elvis Maduro @MeloStat301 You may have a point...but him not "liking how they treat me" is pretty dumb coming from somebody who shouldn't be entitled to anything.  Shump shouldn't have been entitled to a starting role either...that's coaches call.  If you are challenged then play for your spot.  By the way I'm sure you know shump has started for woody most of the time woody has been coach, so that is irrelevant.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Elvis Maduro @VerySilentJay@MeloStat301 Who cares??  Everybody gets brought up in rumors..you gotta PLAY...play for your teammates if that's the case..who cares about the rest?  If you don't like the coach...then ball like its your last day...he is a 3rd year player...he isn't a "long time vet" to act as if he is entitled...no way.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@VerySilentJay @MeloStat301@Elvis Maduro Has nothing to do with coaching at this point.  The kid was the starting 2 guard on a 54 win team with the second seed..who coached him then?  He was a big part in the Celtics series in the playoffs..who coached him then?  He had a great series vs Indiana..who coached him then?

For whatever reason...if he likes the coach..doesn't like the coach whatever...he has REGRESSED.  He is still starting, and not producing.  He needs to suck it up and play..its not as if he didn't perform well under woody, HE HAS.

Those scouts on Thabeet and Darko, scouted them before they played an NBA game..apples and oanges.  The guy who said Chris smith idoesnt deserve to be in the NBA or Ray felton has 2 backups better than him, are saying this for the performance being displayed...the same with the critique on shump.

I certainly hope Shump can come back from the sprain and play ball...but seems as if his ego is getting to him, and he hasn't done anything in the NBA to garner "respect".

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@MeloStat301 @Elvis Maduro  Imo, it's all about coaching.

Leonard was supposed to be just a role player until Pop got a hold of him.

These so called "scouts" are the same idiots that said Thabeet was gonna be a dominant big man in the league and that Darko Milicic was the "new mold" of C's in the league.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Elvis Maduro @MeloStat301 No, you shouldn't care, youre not the one going to play overseas, Shump just might,. he should care.  Care enough about his game to improve or play, he rather be in the studio, it is what it is.

@Elvis Maduro @MeloStat301 He isn't as good as many of us thought.  If he doesn't start playing like we "think" he can, he will be in the d-league or in china in a couple years, that's what.
