Former Knicks great Patrick Ewing will coach against his old team tonight in Charlotte after head coach Steve Clifford was hospitalized.

Ewing said he was “nervous,” according to Al Iannazzone of Newsday.

He also joked that Bobcats owner Michael Jordan called him and said, “He told me if I don’t win I’m fired.”

Ewing has never landed a full-time head coaching job despite his repeated efforts.

Ironically, the Knicks could probably use the 51-year-old Ewing in the middle tonight and for the next month while Tyson Chandler is out with a broken right leg.

Clifford suffered chest pains at dinner Thursday night, had heart stents inserted and is expected to return to the bench Monday, according to the Bobcats and Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.
