Final Score: Knicks 111, Hawks 106

The Knicks defeated the Hawks tonight by a score of 111 to 106.

The Least You Should Know:

Carmelo Anthony and Andrea Bargnani led the way with 35 and 23 points respectively.

Tim Hardaway Jr. outplayed by Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith and played over them during crucial minutes in the 4th quarter.

The game was controlled mostly by the Knicks outside of a brief stretch in the third quarter when Kyle Korver got hot from behind the arc.

Anthony played almost the entire game (38 minutes), sitting for only a few brief stretches.

The Atlanta Hawks were their own worst enemies, turning the ball over nearly 30 times in the game. Paul Millsap had 9 of those turnovers.

Tim Hardaway Jr.This was a great performance by the Knicks. We can say anything we’d like about the Knicks season but tonight it was different. Carmelo Anthony had a fantastic game, putting up 35 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists but the rest of the team contributed immensely.

Tim Hardaway Jr. was really the story of the night. With Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith struggling immensely, Hardaway Jr. came off the bench to score 12 points, including a three pointer and an emphatic slam off of one of the Hawks 27 turnovers. He played well and was rewarded with minutes late in the 4th quarter as Mike Woodson sat Smith in favor of Shumpert and Hardaway Jr. This is a situation that should be monitored closely in the coming days. If the rookie is outplaying the other two, he has to get minutes.

Andrea Bargnani scored 23 points on 11 for 16 from the field. That type of efficiency from Bargnani is just spectacular. Speaking of spectacular, Amare Stoudemire was unsure if he’d play tonight. He came off the bench and was effective if only to provide some incredible energy. The entire team seems to feed off of him when he enters the game and his 9 points and 5 rebounds weren’t too shabby either.

It’s always nice to see the team playing this well, spreading the ball around and watching your superstar absolutely dominate. Anthony was magical tonight and it is on nights like this that you remember why you need him.

The Knicks have an off day on Sunday before welcoming in the Washington Wizards on Monday at 7:30pm.

Gasol is still averaging 14 and 9 with a block per game. They say he's playing bad because he's not happy there. The biggets drop in his nuber are his FG% at 41% from 51. Not sure he's worth it for Chandler.

With K-Mart out indefinitely, will the Knicks look to create a roster spot for Jeremy Tyler anytime soon?

Woody shows no interest in playing Murry or Aldrich and Chris Smith is just a roster clog. If we don't move soon, someone else could sign him.

This season and even last season Chandler has been a better player than Gasol. Like I said yesterday it seems like the Knicks will be getting Gasol and Lowy. It's about saving money. There is a bigger motive that's being overlooked here. A motive that has nothing to do with this season.

If #Lakers want Shumpert, #Knicks would want Kaman but would have to include another player to match salaries. Udrih maybe?

Tyson, Shump, Beno FOR Gasol, Kaman, and a 1st round pick

THEN

Felton, World Peace, 2018 1st round for Lowry

Lowry

JR/Hardaway

Melo

Gasol

Kaman

Shump played his best ball with D'Antoni, so it makes sense that the Lakers would inquire about his availability. It was D'Antoni, in fact, that made the call to draft Shump and he was an important cog when we had the 5th rated defense back in 2011-12. In a faster paced system and playing in the open court, his athleticism could more of a strength. Here it seems that he is trying to become an ISO player, without much success. The question is who would we get back from LA?

I'm not seeing LAL and NYK as good trade partners. Too many big salaries, too few young assets, both are looking to make FA splashes in the next 2 years. I'd be shocked if there was a major trade.

It's truly a sad day for the Knicks, despite a very good win, that the news is about a coach doing what a coach is supposed to do. Playing your best players and creating the best lineup is a significant part of the job. We had a lineup on the floor that was pesky on defense and moving the ball on the other end of the court. It was like turning the clock back, oh, 8 months or so. Thousands of coaches have been doing this for years upon years.

It will be a happy day when this isn't news.

I can't see a trade that makes sense with the Lakers. Lakers want to keep their cap free next year and get any value they can from Pau most likely. They aren't going to take on long big contracts.

Knicks are in salary hell till 2015 anyway.

If Lakers had a pick to trade, I could see something involving Felton+Shump+parts for Nash+pick (since nash is 9 mil next season) but the lakers DON'T have a pick, and no one is going to give a decent 1st rounder for half a season of Pau Gasol. If you could find a 3rd team that would kill to get Gasol, maybe a deal can be made.

"idk why we always trade for players on their last legs."

Because we dont have the assets to trade for good players in their prime

Lakers want Chandler and Shump not Amare and Shump….and they have no picks to trade until like 2020…

I don't think we should get rid of Stat. I think we should keep him and resign him when his contract expires. Give him like 5mil a season. Hes good for that. Cant lie though. I like Gasol.

Jesus Blas

@L-Switch The motive is Lebron opting out and the Knicks making room cap wise for one last shot at him. Which I don't see happening.

knickfan2

This trade makes no sense for us. Even with Gasol's expiring contract, Lance Stephenson is probably the best available free agent next summer.

We would probably end up waiting until 2015 to make a big splash anyway.

@CL4nyk I agree. Both teams want to exit unwanted salaries while obtaining players that bolster their residing "star" player- Melo/Kobe.

Well, at least his brother is having better luck in the D-league.

@tommy2b Wast those assets on nominal trades. Overpay and set a bad precedent other GMs follow when dealing with the Knicks Front Office.

@rico D'Antoni would take Amar'e and run his offense through and "ride him like he's Secretariat." If Amar'e breaks , it would be LA's problem.

KnickelusKnickleby

@rico i wouldn't dare trade Chandler for Gasol though

Gasol is a great player but he's on his last legs

and idk why we always trade for players on their last legs.

knickfan2

They want our best perimeter defender and our best interior defender...for Pau Gasol's 19 mil expiring contract.

If they take JR and throw in Jodie Meeks (as a backup for THjr), I would do this.

knickfan2
knickfan2

It was great seeing JR sit in the dog house for the final 14:40 of the game. No subpar defense, no silly turnovers, no ridiculous shots...just good clean basketball without that malcontent on the court.

Now, maybe Shump can get his head back in the game.

L-Switch

@Jesus Blas @L-Switch Would Chandler, Shump and Felton be enough of a dump to get that kind of space though? I would think Amare in place of Chandler would do it. Not sure about the numbers yet but I will look into it.

Jesus Blas

@Carl D Hill @Jesus Blas Yea he does lol, like 16 minutes a game, 8 pts and 5 rebounds.

BTW NOT saying I want these trades, but I could see it happening

tommy2b

Exactly why im against the lowry deal.  He's decent but we need to save our assets (what's left of them anyway) to try and put together a package for an impact player... Unless we pick up lowry as part of a 3-way deal for Rondo or Gasol

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

@Mr.Boots @rico now Amare yes !! cause they have the same injury out time slots

if somehow we trade Shump/Amare for Gasol and Meeks i would do that.

and it would make NY's future look promising since we'd rid ourselves of Amares Contract next year.

tommy2b

they're also not going to trade gasol for our pile of trash

lobcity

Yes i'm serious. Amare would be great at 5mill per. I would do it and have him come off the bench. It make sense.

he should only be traded if the contract we are taking back is not past 2015

@Sandro Guedes @Carl D Hill Knicks wanna clear cap space for one last run at Lebron after THIS season if he opts out. getting rid of Felton, Tyson, and getting back expiring deals helps Dolan's dream.

Knicks_Fanatic

@Carl D Hill@knickfan2

Gasol is getting plenty of shots. It's not like he is being underutilized. I'm not sure what his problem is. Last year, D'Antoni wanted to run a lot of the offense through him and he didn't like that either. He is a very good player with lots of skills that most big men lack.

knickfan2

He never put on his big boy pants.

I agree with you on Xavier Henry, but I don't think he's available until January 15.

saintknick

@Sandro Guedes @Carl D Hill @tommy2b um, and because he's not one dunk from the hospital, and because he can play 30+ a game, and because he's a quality player who's dogging it in a system that plays to his weaknesses.

So what... He negotiated his deal. That's what he was supposed to do. You cant be upset at him for that. Blame Dolan not Stat.

@NoVaCaInE

OK. Chandler is very unappreciated by many fans. Gasol for Chandler doesn't make us a better team.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@Knicks_Fanatic the only way it makes sense to me to move Chandler is if we can blow it all up. See my post below. I agree with you that Chandler is the perfect C to play with Melo. Will LA agree to trade us Gasol for Amar'e? I doubt it. According to reports they want Tyson and Shump.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@Sandro Guedes@NoVaCaInE

Why does Chandler need to go? He is the perfect center to play with Melo. He doesn't need the ball and covers on the defensive end. Gasol is just another guy who complains he doesn't see the ball enough.

NoVaCaInE

@Sando Lol. Trust me with the mess I've seen this year, I would love to blow it all up.

@Sandro Guedes @akamarb They won't do that deal. Way to many injuries on that team. They are not going to add triple knee/eye popping Amare.
