Knicks finally have righted the ship, ready for a statement week

Harris Decker

Carmelo AnthonyThe Knicks are back and playing the best basketball we’ve seen this year. Against the Brooklyn Nets we saw them go nuts from behind the arc and that trend continued last night against the Magic. In both games, they shot over 50% from 3-point range and hit 33 3′s in those games. That recipe is what led to the Knicks winning the Atlantic Division one year ago and that style of play has returned to New York.

Hitting 3′s is a summation of passing. Playing isolation basketball with Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith only gets you so far. Against the Nets we saw the extra pass. We saw them moving the ball around the outside to the open man and we saw guys like Iman Shumpert and Andrea Bargnani driving to the basket instead of settling for tough outside shots.

Shumpert has been very impressive over the last two games. He’s back to playing aggressive basketball and hitting outside shots at a very high percentage. Against the Nets he hit 5 of 7 from behind the arc and last night he absolutely posterized the Magic’s Maurice Harkless. He’s being more aggressive and also speeding up the pace for the Knicks. Multiple times over the last few games he pulled down a rebound (he’s had 10 over those 2 games) and then raced up the court, leaving everyone else in his tracks before either finishing it himself or passing it off to a wide open man behind the arc.

Bargnani has also been impressive. He’s playing better defense and is showing that he can be an absolute sharp shooter from behind the arc. He’s scoring 3 more points per game than last year and has increased his per game stats in almost every category. As the Knicks learn how to get him more involved, that trade is going to continue to look better and better. As Ben said yesterday, a lot of Knicks fans owe Bargnani an apology. He’s playing hard and hitting shots. What more could we ask for?

Now we look ahead. In the next week, the Knicks face the Cavaliers, Bulls, Hawks and the Celtics twice. By December 13th (one week from last night), the Knicks very well could be playing for 1st place in the Atlantic Division. Isn’t that a long way from the feeling after the 3-13 start, that had us ready to liquidate the team? Things feel good and are finally heading in the right direction in New York.

so much for the idea behind this blog post (knicks right ship)

I knew this was premature.

For all you guys who say we have turned the corner, after the first half what say you now.  The celts

unlike the knicks are well coached.  Fire the coach.  Get a point guard

Too bad GIF's aren't working for pre game rituals.

Martin out today with a bad ankle.  Hardaway, Jr starting (along with Felton, Shump, Melo & Bargs).

Did Irvin or Sandro sign up? This place wouldn't be the same without them.

Team basketball... what a concept. Think where we would be if we just did this from the beginning.

That's what happens when woody uses everyone and the team actually plays as a team

Is Paul Pierce wearing orthopedic shoes? It certainly looks like it lol.

Let's keep perspective. Knicks beat two bad teams missing there best players (Orl is missing Vucevic and Tobias Harris). The 1st half wasn't great especially defensively. I'll give them credit for pushing the ball and passing, but the competition is weak. They made there shots, and they have shot the ball very poorly all season, esp JR and Felton. But you can't expect that to be every game. Better defenders will guard Melo one on one and he will begin to force shots up after the open looks go away. Would like to see more PnR action to counter that.

After 9 losses, not getting excited over two wins. Glad to see we are shooting better (will that last?) and at least found how we should be playing. But ease up on season turned around....

It's nice Knicks have won last 2 games but i'm not going to get too excited until they reach .500. They are playing well though. The shots they were missing earlier are now falling. Bargiani seems to get better and more confident every game. Hardaway is showing a real nice outside shot and explosive athleticism toward the basket on the rare occasion they run a break. Still not where they should be defensively, giving up too many easy buckets. Heading in right direction at least.

Do we really have to sign in every time we want to post on mobile?

I agree Felton renew play is key,the passing makes shots easier to make.Hardaway is a legit player and Grunwald drafts has been outstanding to date.

Tomorrow should a good test for our offense. Boston has the 11th ranked defense in the NBA. That's a big step up from the bottom feeders from Orlando and Brooklyn. On offense, Boston is not so good.

wow. gone for a couple of days and suddenly Knicks are winning and no discus! I must be in an alternative universe.

I missed both games. Please someone tell me if this is for real or just two wins over two terrible teams?

YES, players are regaining their confidence! When Tyson comes back, hopefully we can become a threat again. It just sucks when players are playing well and with drive, we have to worry about our ownership possibly shipping them out for a marginal player managed by the CAA

Bargs has playing very well at the 5. But, when Tice comes back and Bargs is moved back to the 4, will his production be the same?

@BiggieSmalls The problem with JR is that he plays even on those days he "wakes up" with a "sore knee."

@NYKnickerBocker I can tolerate most of Sandros posts. Dont care much for Irvin calling people retardos for disagreeing with him.

@OLD_KNICK I don't mind down votes or trolls to be honest with you. They bring differing viewpoints and kind of add spice to the dialog. Without em this would be a very dull place....lol...just my opinion.

I agree, for the most part. As far as Melo being guarded one on one, that is a problem for most teams. Melo will draw doubles. As long as he passes well out of them, and the team moves the ball like they have the last two games, we can win a lot of games.

@buddhabing They are playing in the NBA, all the players in this league can play. You are not going to shut them out. They are going to score. We beat them by 38 points. Ef the missing players, we beat them by 38

@zdiddy4nyk Opponents have to pick their poison. Don't double Melo he will score at a higher clip.

MeloStat301

We went toe to toe with the likes of Bulls and pacers..two of the best defensive squads in the NBA. We were playing awful...and still managed to take it to the limit with those squads...this team has been tested vs elite defenses already...good to see the offense coming around now..sticking to that movement WITH players hitting shots will be the key to turning the season around.

@knickfan2 I don't see a reason for his role to change. Chandler is our presence inside on both ends, while AB does most of scoring from the outside, off the curl, P&P's, and spotting up.

And when he takes it to the basket, Kmart is away from the basket.

Replace Kmart and Chandler. Things won't change imo,

@knickfan2 Bargs has been playing with K-Mart. As long as Tyson doesn't try to do too much offensively, the Knicks should be fine.

As far as name calling goes, I don't really get involved with that - but more than Irvin call people names here. I just ignore those type of things really.

I like having different points of views here. The two do make some valid points and sometimes bring to light something that fans may not want to see.

So true....

Sandro is a disgruntled knick fan who is just pissed that we have been bad so long. irvin or nostra-dumb-ass is someone who likes to think he is a realistic fan but if you dare disagree with him you are a retardo!!!

solar_lion

I believe Zdiddy4nyk is talking about specific teams with defensive wing players that can play Melo one on one or with minimal help- e.g. Paul George, Khawi Leonard, Louel Deng. AL Farouq Aminu of the Pelicans neutralized Melo a few nights back. What then? P&R with? P&P with Bargs? So I get what diddy's saying. Plus concerns still linger about Woodson's ability to add dimensions to the offense.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

We shot 36% against the Bulls and 38% against the Pacers. We need to do better to beat them and can!

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@BiggieSmalls @illmatix Metta hasn't played well, maybe his knee still bothering, who knows.

But if we base this decision solely by play, JR's minutes should go down while Timmy's and Shump should increase with more relevant roles.

brookdon

Sandro is a real fan, I wouldn't say the same for Irvin at times though. I remember a few seasons back he admitted that he would find no problem switching allegiances to teams (aka the Nets) simply being that they were closer to his house anyways. That's not a real fan. He's just a guy who enjoys getting a rouse out of people (similar to NAC)

solar_lion
solar_lion

That's true, passing the ball to his guys on the wings gets them familiarity and rythm and over time that will make taking those shots more fluid. When that happens- as it appears to be happening now- that clears space for Melo to work, since opposing teams will have to address the Knicks on the perimeter. It's chicken and egg all evolution.

buddhabing
buddhabing

@solar_lion Knicks have capable offensive players. Shouldn't be too hard to get his teammates going if Melo just puts his mind to it. He should whip the ball around whether he's doubled or not anyway. Make quicker decisions. It would make him a more efficient player.
