Knicks offense explodes for 123 points, push win streak to four

Sam Spiegelman

No Tyson Chandler, no problem.

The New York Knicks overcame the loss of their center with a 123-110 defeat of the reeling Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden Monday night.

With the win, the Knicks’ win streak is extended to four. And they’re doing so in convincing fashion. Over the past four games the team’s average margin of victory is 15.5 points. It also marked the 17th straight loss for the Sixers, three shy of the franchise-record for losses in a single season.

After trailing by five after the first quarter, New York outscored Philly 97-79 the rest of the contest. And they did so with a balanced offense. No longer is Carmelo Anthony running the show. As we saw after the All-Star Break when ‘Melo averaged 41.3 points per game and the team went 1-3, the burden cannot fall solely on one superstar.

The Knicks (25-40) offense was in rare form. Five different players — Carmelo Anthony, Amare’ Stoudemire, Raymond Felton, J.R. Smith and Tim Hardaway Jr. — all scored more than 20 points. The last time the team had four 20-plus-point scorers was in April 17, 2012, when the Anthony, Smith, Chandler and Steve Novak did so against the Boston Celtics.

“I love nights like this,” Anthony said. “Four guys with 20-plus points. Sharing the ball. Making plays. Having fun out there. Taking the load off me. I love nights like that.”

Since the beginning of March, Stoudemire has been a consistent offensive contributor. He’s averaged 17.3 points per game over the past six games and is shooting better than 64 percent from the floor. His 23 points against the 76ers matches a season high, last reached against the Toronto Raptops on Dec. 28, 2013.

Also playing a major role was the rookie. Hardaway’s 28 points was one point shy of his career-high mark.

“It feels great, said Stat, who had 23 points. “I have been working extremely hard to get back to my normal self. My confidence is there. It never left.”

“Everyone was moving the ball and taking open shots,” added Hardaway, who scored 13 points over the final 12 minutes. “‘Stat’ got us going. J.R. was getting going and then Pablo (Prigioni) and everybody started finding me, so I just wanted to get myself going.”

The 123 points scored was the highest the team put up since a victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Jan. 24, 2013. New York has averaged 114.0 points per game during this four-game stretch, about 16 points per game more than the team’s season average (98.4).

The Knicks aim to extend their winning streak to five when they travel up to Boston to take on the Celtics Wednesday night.

I don't trust Broussard but:

@IanBegley: RT @Chris_Broussard: Source: Phil Jackson and NYK expected to finalize deal by end of the week. Announcement could be made next week.

We have 17 games left, what will it take to get into the playoffs.  If Atlanta plays .500 ball the rest of the way they get to 37 wins. We own tie breaker over them so that means 12-5 in the last 17 games.

They hve 7 road games left, 5 of which i think they will lose.

Do you think the Knicks can get 12 wins?

Tommy dee stated that the knicks offered everything that PJ wanted. How can you say no to this?

The reason the team struggles is because THEY ARE ON THEIR OWN! Woody acts like he's coaching but he's not. He just does the same things over and over---get out the clipboard and start writing up some BS. He never sits them down and just talks to them or tries to motivate and uplift---HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW! HE'S SLOW AND HAS ZERO VOCABULARY!

Anybody can write up BS plays--he(( I'll do that for millions of $$$$!

All sources now saying Knicks/Phil not even close to a deal. From Jackson inevitably coming to the Knicks yesterday to not being close in a New York minute.

Get used to it! Phil has an enormous ego and loves the spotlight! Even more reason why he will take the gig!

@brookdon

What's the rush? Phil is in no hurry. There isn't anything he can do today that he couldn't do next week or next month.

@Biggie

Is there anything that Woj said regarding Jim Dolan that wasn't true? I don't think so. I want this move to happen as well, but I definitely have my reservations about Dolan screwing this whole thing up somehow. We were on our way with Donnie Walsh and if he was just left alone we might be still climbing the NBA ladder instead of falling off it. Do you think Phil is gonna take ANY crap from Dolan? I don't think so...nor should he. Where does Dolan keep his rings? I just hope Phil is not running the Knicks from the beach in sunny California. He needs to be right in the middle of the stew here in New York. This isn't a part-time gig. You're either All IN or you're ALL OUT.

@Biggie Now you're scaring the hell out me.  We are agreeing too much on this issue. Stop it will ya Just stop it I say! Stooooooooooooop it!

Dolan will surely find a way to make the worst out of hiring Phil Jackson. He will screw it up somehow, some way. Count on it.

@Lee Lewin

We have 10 games left against above .500 teams. Over the course of the season we have only 6 wins against that caliber of opponent. We can do it, but it won't be easy. 9 of our last 10 games are against above .500 teams. Atlanta has 4 of their last 10 against above .500 teams. We will have to catch them quickly.

@Lee Lewin Whoever gets that slot will get clubbed like a baby seal I'm afraid.  Not pretty.

@Lee Lewin Gotta believe. Remember the elite teams who clinch seeding may even sit their starters towards the end of the season against us. Atlanta has no business wanting to be the 8th seed. They want a lottery pick. Cleveland is our only competitor for that spot IMO, Detroit doesn't scare me.

@Knicks_Fanatic @brookdon  If Phil is in no hurry, than Phil isn't interested.  He doesn't need to start his job until the season ends, but if they don't have a deal in place by the end of this week, IMO this is not happening, and probably was never going to.

lindro88
lindro88

@Knixtradamus @brookdon  He is into $$$.  If Phil does decide to come on board, hopefully it's not just another in a long line of Players, coaches, etc.  who have come for a a cash grab.  The day Dantoni was hired I remember his press conference.  He was asked about his desire to win a championship. Of course he said, his goal was to someday win a title.  I remember thinking right away he should have added, "obviously that won't be happening here, this is about the huge contract"  Like anyone else, I'd be happy if Phil took the job, but I'll keep my expectations very low.

lindro88
lindro88

@fast_eddie  You hit it on the head.  If  Jax takes this job, and doesn't set up shop at MSG, we know he's just he latest, biggest name to collect a bunch of Dolan' money.  I really hope he has more integrity than that, and that his competitive nature, won't allow him to screw up his legacy.  Phil has always coached teams with the best player or players in the league.  This would be a new experience for him.  Taking over a team in shambles.  He has nothing to prove as a coach, but if he wants to reach the real rare air,  turning the Knicks into a well run, consistent title contender would be the way to do it.

@thatsagoodpoint @Lee Lewin  i know i'm just playing the safe role here. They do have 13 home games remaining and really don't have that tough of  a schedule. Do you think this team can finish 16-5? which is what the knicks would be.

Lee Lewin

@onewhoknix @Lee Lewin  I agree on this part with the lottery pick.

Cleveland doesn't worry me that much. Hav eyou seen their schedule coming up. Its beyond brutal.

at phoenix, golden state and clippers

Then home to miami OKC and houston

then at knicks

then tornto and then at det and brooklyn before home to indy

They can possibly lose 9 of next 11.

@thatsagoodpoint Phil not going back to the Lakers now!  Been there done that!  He does not want to be compared to West out there. He's already done everything possible as coach.  It's time for a new challenge

@thatsagoodpoint @onewhoknix

Charley Rosen is very close to Phil and co-authored a book or two with him. He was his assistant when Phil coached the Albany Patroons way back when. Phil lived up in Woodstock, NY close to him back in the hippie days. They go way back. If Charley says something about Phil, consider it a good source.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@thatsagoodpoint  Nonsense. Phil knows it's cold here and it's not like he has to deal with the everyday issues like we do.

I'm sure his rich girlfriend is tired of him laying around telling ring stories. Phil needs this as bad as we need him.

DONE DEAL!

@OLDKNICK @xmenreturnLOL If we get thru this and PHil is our GM, then anything is possible.

@thatsagoodpoint True but when has a brother ever acquiesced and admitted his sister was right all along? lol

Phil would be better to keep Jeanie on his side and not take that job and possible fail there so she and her brother are finally on the same page.

Worked that sibling rivalry to you advantage Phil.  You're good a triangles!

Jackson: You see the way the lakers disrespected me? They hired Mike Dantoni over me. Why should I I bring my talents back to LA if they believe I am not worthy enough. The knicks have offered me an opportunity of a lifetime.

Jeanie: But but, I love you.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO The knicks Phil. Beat them all.

@thatsagoodpoint @xmenreturnLOL  Jeanie is fighting with her brother.  I'm sure she told Phil "While I collect my inheritance, go beat his a$$  from NY! Dumb little f##k how dare he watches Kupofcrack hires Pringles!"

Jeanie is more amp for Phil coming here than Phil probably is.  She has interests now coast to coast.

Phil is from Montana and has a house there. He also has one that overlooks the Pacific. He does have health issues with his hips and knees, so cold weather is a real factor.
