Knicks Week 8 report card, presented by Long Island University

Harris Decker

Offense B

It’s hard to believe but over the course of the past week, the Knicks are actually 2-1. You heard that right ladies and gentleman of Knicks Blog. The team has posted a winning record this week and that is in large part to the offense. While things aren’t clicking at full speed yet, we’re starting to see role players begin to emerge. In all three games this week, the Knicks scored 100+ points and got big performances from guys not named Carmelo Anthony. In Saturday’s win over the Hawks, Andrea Bargnani scored 23. In the tough loss to the Wizards, 4 different players other than Anthony broke double digits and in the win over the Bucks, J.R. Smith and Beno Udrih both had clutch shots, scoring 19 and 21 points respectively. Still, the stagnant, isolation play is still far too present for this team to truly perform at an A level.

Defense D+

While the team was scoring 100+ points in every game this week, they were also giving up 100+ points in every game this week. The Knicks are making a nasty habit of making point guards of any shape or size look like elite scorers. Over the course of the past week, the team gave up an average of 18 points per game to guards, led by huge performances from Brandon Knight (36), John Wall (20 points) and Louis Williams (27 points). The Knicks seem like they are playing without a defensive identity. The point guards being slower and older than many of these younger guards and are being taken advantage of. Tyson Chandler’s return on Wednesday night should give the team a boost but things have to turn around on the defensive end.

dear cdh,

what a surprise that you'd be benched again...your hard hitting hard nosed play has really been something to behold most of this year...I really cant imagine why they'd sit you...don't worry yourself..your really gonna be something special  in years to come, but right now with the season coming to an end with playoffs and positioning on the line ,your talent best serves us in the pressbox behind such super talents as brian strait..

ps .enjoy your day off dreaming of those future great days ahead...don't worry about this year its no biggie and don't worry about all those studs knocking on the door behind you...keep up the great play..

Does this "hard hitting" Calvin de Haan live next door to sex symbol Rosie O'Donnell?

Just saw the line combos for todays game! Cappy definately grasping for straws! Third line Kenendy and Strome between Nelson. Second line KO, Kulemin and Franz! Who would have thought at midseason that the main concern heading towards the playoffs (maybe) would be scoring from our forwards! Unless Grabners hurt, he should have been in today's lineup !

islesfan77
islesfan77

@TonyM Can't say I am a fan of those lines, but let's see what happens.

TomDinNJ
TomDinNJ

Lee-JT-Bailey is a very slow 1st line.

islesfan27

@kevinpt @TomDinNJ  Lets face it Crapuano deserves t be fired after this season, his in game management is putid, he rarely has ever made an in game adjustments, special teams for the most part have been brutal for years,

Just the sight of this clown makes me sick, he will not take this team any further

kevinpt
kevinpt

@TomDinNJ Yeah but it was working really, really well before Okposo came back.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@kevinpt @TomDinNJ Yes, I think this is the reason why Cappy is going back to it. Personally, I would like to see KO back with JT for the playoffs, but Cappy is apparently looking for scoring.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@islesfan27 @kevinpt @TomDinNJ Yeah, he deserves to be fired for taking a team to 90+ season. A team, that some fans here say, is really not that good.

Seriously, though, if the sight of him makes you sick, then Snow should get rid of him immediately, what the heck is he waiting for?

islesfan27
islesfan27

@islesfan77 @islesfan27 @kevinpt @TomDinNJ  Lets be real, this team was and has been horrible defensively flawed all year with the exception of may be the past 8games, and if they weren't scoring 4+ goals in the first three months of the season to compensate for their horrid "D" they would not even be sniffing the play offs.

So if any one thinks he is a good coach they need o get their head examined

islesfan77
islesfan77

@islesfan27 @islesfan77 @kevinpt @TomDinNJ  Serious question, while I don't agree that the team is "horrible defensively flawed", I am curious where you would rank them in that category.

Also do you think they they have  improved in that category from last season?

TonyM
TonyM

@ kevinpt         Unfortunately I think just making the playoffs will earn Capuano an extension from Snow! This team has gone as far as it will under the current coaching staff! There seems to be no accountability amongst the players with the present regime. Certain players (ie, Grabner, deHaan, Donovan) are used as scapegoats while other players (Strait, Clutterbuck, Nelson) are never taken to task!

kevinpt
kevinpt

@TonyM I don't know, it's hard to tell. If the team gets ousted in the first round it would be pretty disappointing and I could see them going with a new coaching staff for the move to Brooklyn. But if they win a round or two, I would be pretty certain that Cappy stays put. It's kind of a win-win or lose-lose situation depending on how you look at it. Personally, I think the team is better off with a new coach in the long run. I think Capuano was a decent/cheap option in the rebuilding phase whom the younger players liked playing for, but I don't think he's the guy who's going to take them to that next level.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@kevinpt @TonyM The problem is that we don't know how the players would react to Cappy being fired. Cappy has been in the system for awhile.

TonyM
TonyM

Wonder what Grabner did to Capuano and what Strait did for him? At this point Grabners a better option then both Clutterbuck and Kennedy! If this team misses the playoffs hope Cappy's gone and Snow with him!

kevinpt
kevinpt

@TonyM Cappy yes, Snow no. If the Isles even lose in the first round, I think Capuano will be gone. But I don't think Snow is going anywhere.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@kevinpt @TonyM I can definitely agree about the Islanders letting Cappy go at some point. I think one of the reasons they hired him was because he was cheap. Now that the team has money, Snow may decide to upgrade. The question is whether it would do more damage than good.

TomDinNJ
TomDinNJ

Lee-JT- Bailey....KO to 2nd line. Vis in for dehaan. No Grabner.

Last game at NVMC for me, let's make it a good one boys!!

TomDinNJ

Wonder how Cappy will screw up the line combos today. If Bailey is still on the first line and Kennedy on the second, I will be disgusted before the game starts.

It is an extremely polyannic Saturday I see

erika

I don't get it....I just don't get it! ....Talbot played like, what..20 games in a row. Dubnyk played like 40 in a row. The list goes on. Teams play their #1 during crucial times. Not Cappy! I just don't understand why our top goalie cannot play back to back during this dire time???! We need points in the worse way, and I'm sorry, but the coaching staff has epically failed at putting our best players on the ice. Benching of our fastest player when speed was the 1 advantage we had over LA was plain stupid! Resting young energetic players like Strome for no reason except cluelessness is what drives me crazy! The babying of this team is what is making them mentally weak and will also hurt their conditioning...it already has. At a time when we should be raising the bar, our coaches decided to take a step back and "relax". Nothing we can do now. I was on board and still am for giving Cappy a shot with a good team. However, if they don't make the playoffs...the next day, the whole coaching staff should be cleaning their lockers!

The last sentence just made me very happy, jrjr. Well from the comma on.

<<I just don't understand why our top goalie cannot play back to back during this dire time??>>

It's not even back-to-back games, there was a day's rest in-between.

@jrjr @erika

I would love to read their contract, particularly the terms regarding how they share and transition power and decision making during the two year changeover.

But I completely agree with you . . . the new owners really want to win, and some of the things we've seen in the last half year I believe are related to that.

jrjr
jrjr

@erika if, and thats a big if they collapse - i think you can safely bet there will be a clearing of house - especially when a mike babcock is going to be available. the new owners want to win. they are very passionate about that fact. Charles is still in charge, but not much longer.

Take your basketball talk and get lost! How anyone can watch that sport is beyond me. If it wasn't for the NBA we'd have the world's tallest garbage men.

The Bruins and Sens sit 8 points back of the Isles.

The Sens can collect 18 points max,

the Bruins 16 points max,

the Isles 14 points max.

If the Isles go 0-0-7, the Sens need to go 8-1, and Bruins need to 8-0.

The Bruins and Sens each have remaining games with Rangers, Caps and Wings.. The Wings and Caps are lower in the standings then the NY Isles. Neither the Bruins or Sens have remaining games with the NY Islanders..

Just some math to consider while your considering the chances of the Isles not making the playoffs..

Please returning to cheering the team on to a 100 point season, and first rd home ice advantage.

since72
since72

@rmbbanned2  The recent 1-5-1 record has been against 6 teams currently in playoff position.  4 of the remaining 7 are against opponents who are out of the playoffs.  They will end up getting the 7 points you talk about.

Goaltending, probably the only issue with not advancing in 2013, is there.

The PK which was my biggest concern a month ago, has solidified.

If Grabovski  can come back, we add a very skilled player.

Scoring hasn't been an issue all year until the last 7 games.  Cappy has gotten a look at what playoff teams do to win games against the Isles.  This is a nice edge if he can figure out how to combat it.  This is his time.  We talked earlier in the season about him winning in the playoffs as a coach.  The jury is now out.

jt91

@since72 Only problem with the 4 out of 7 teams are out of the playoffs, we play Columbus twice and they are getting hot with a elite goalie! I hope things turn around this weekend!

islesfan77
islesfan77

@jt91 @since72 Columbus just beat the Hawks 5-2 with their top goaltender in net for the goals. Imagine the posts on this blog if that happened to the Islanders in this stretch.

Except you miss the little fact of the Hawks winning 2 recent cups and us going nearly a quarter century without winning a round. You want to trash your fan base at least provide context.

Dying easy for 20 years.

Let's flip the coin, kind of tired seeing so many again soooo happy with a collapse as long as the get to play 87-88 games instead of 82.

rmbbanned2

@dkdk pretty much did provide the context.

Hey, how many fans were celebrating the Rangers losing to the Bruins?

Even though the Rangers winning was in the Isles best interests?

@islesfan77 Just tired of reading from all these "diehards" who are suddenly willing to " die easy"..

Dear CdH-

I know your only 23, and you haven't played a full NHL season, and in 2 years have logged 116 games to this point in your career. But even being 23 and missing considerable AHL development time measured in years with shoulder surgery, your never gonna be more then a bottom pair defender.  We don't rush to judgement here- it is your fault that the team isn't scoring these last few weeks. If the team isn't scoring- then we need to blame a defender who has 116 NHL career games. Last year you were a revelation, everybody loved your game and potential. But now, well your just bottom pair- if we are lucky.. At age 23 we already know their is no upside to your game, and everything you have do so far is pure luck. Much like the everything else this team has done this season.

Well the going has gotten tough- so we best be going..

Sarcasm font off.. i need to find a new ink cartridge

That wasnt very nice.....also inaccurate. We get it youre not a fan of cdh.

@jrjr Really? I hope you are being funny about not realizing that the message sarcastic. I mean he stated he was turning off the sarcasm font at the end.

The checks he lays are punishing. Yes he is a real Scott Stevens. Maybe borrow the rm sarcasm font.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@rmbbanned2 Well done.

By the way, I know a lot of funds are on this CdH sucks or CdH has regressed bandwagon, but I still find him to be a gritty and hard hitting defenseman. I don't think he is small, but he plays much tougher than he looks. The checks he lays into players are punishing.

The thing about CdH is that he has good offensive component to his game, but he appears to be focusing on establishing his defensive game first. He actually said it during an interview this season, which confirmed my suspicion.  Also, it is not like he is getting any time on the PP anyway.

At 23, this is not a player I would get rid of.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

pretty sure hes actually taking the opposite stance and is a fan of CdH.

im a big fan of cdh and he clearly has a ton of upside but he does have his moments of mishandling the puck causing bad turnovers (as does everyone..boychuk had a terrible turnover last game too, and leddy had a horrible one against the wild, except his skating is incredible and he was able to get back)
sophomore slumps do happen and im not worried he wont be a solid nhl defenseman for us...but i dont think you are getting the most out of your defenseman or your line up as a whole when you pair strait and dehaan.  i feel a lot more comfortable when the very responsible hamonic is also out there.
