Knicks Week 8 report card, presented by Long Island University

Harris Decker

Offense B

It’s hard to believe but over the course of the past week, the Knicks are actually 2-1. You heard that right ladies and gentleman of Knicks Blog. The team has posted a winning record this week and that is in large part to the offense. While things aren’t clicking at full speed yet, we’re starting to see role players begin to emerge. In all three games this week, the Knicks scored 100+ points and got big performances from guys not named Carmelo Anthony. In Saturday’s win over the Hawks, Andrea Bargnani scored 23. In the tough loss to the Wizards, 4 different players other than Anthony broke double digits and in the win over the Bucks, J.R. Smith and Beno Udrih both had clutch shots, scoring 19 and 21 points respectively. Still, the stagnant, isolation play is still far too present for this team to truly perform at an A level.

Defense D+

While the team was scoring 100+ points in every game this week, they were also giving up 100+ points in every game this week. The Knicks are making a nasty habit of making point guards of any shape or size look like elite scorers. Over the course of the past week, the team gave up an average of 18 points per game to guards, led by huge performances from Brandon Knight (36), John Wall (20 points) and Louis Williams (27 points). The Knicks seem like they are playing without a defensive identity. The point guards being slower and older than many of these younger guards and are being taken advantage of. Tyson Chandler’s return on Wednesday night should give the team a boost but things have to turn around on the defensive end.

Bargnani's shot was the best thing that could have happened to Woodrow after the Wizards game. It's all anyone in the Knicks PR is talking about.

Woodson won't talk about fiasco at end of Wizards game but gladly goes into details of Bargnani's screw-up...

My confidence level in this Knicks team will only go up with getting some consecutive wins.  I'm not happy with the Bucks win.  I think we should have lost that game.

Anyway, here is my Knicks interest level scale by consecutive wins.  Any loss drops it back.

1 Win = Not excited

2 Wins = Meh

3 Wins = Neutral

4 Wins = Better

5 Wins = Let's keep this going

You do realize that the great young pg's in this league, score 30 on each other as well don't you? Our problem is we get nothing on the offensive end from ours. Watch some other nba games now and then. It's very enlightening.

People may think i'm crazy, but with chandler back AND a good point guard, i think this team can be very good.  I would trade the pick for Lowery and go to war.  We would keep his bird rights.  He would help a ton on the defensive end.

Pops sits Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili against GSW and still gets a W.

The Spurs have it figured out for sure.

I haven't posted in a while, although woodson won this last game i still believe he should be fired a lot of mismanagement and poor player control and subs.

gotta love my knicks we are dying for a pg that can either shoot or penetrate or better yet both and instead of looking into Augustin like many here and my self were saying we brought up Chris Smith SMGDH! Not saying DJ is what we need to be over the top but he could help. Instead we are looking to give up a 1st for Lowry when we could have had DJ for free.

Our offense is far below a B. C- would be more accurate. Our efficiency is not good.

Melo and JR, 52 shots to score 48 against the Bucks.

Durant and Westbrook, 32 shots to score 52 against the Bulls.

Lakers and K Marshall come to an agreement.

It'll be interesting to see how the this kid does. I wanted the FO to give him a look.

Woodson should tell the team to stop choking 3's

Bargnani needs to establish a new comfort zone closer to the basket. He should sometimes drives to the basket and attempt some of his patented dunk or cause opponents to foul him. It baffles me that Woodson does not tell him that.

JR should stop being a volume 3 shooter. I think he should be prevented from choking these shots. Woodson should tell him in no uncertain term  to drive to the basket and create for his teammates.

Shump should be  prevented from shooting period!  His offensive game  has regressed so much that it is not even believable.

If Woodson makes these 3 sensical adjustments, the team will win more games. We are just playing dumb basket ball at this point.

JR Smith has scored 219 points on 234 shot attempts so far this season.

Trade this bum immediately!

when the other team turns the ball over 30x and you take 50% more shots and your only up by 2 points how can you say the offense was good?

B on offense?  Is that on a scale of A - B?

I posted this is the other thread, but no responses. But what would you guys think of a Tyson and Shump for Jeff Green and Brandon Bass swap (it works financially)?  Both teams get two starters out of it and I feel like it makes sense for both teams involved.  Bass would come off the books in 2015 and Green could be a good piece to build around with Melo; plus he's a consistent 15 ppg guy.

@darealeric Great point.  This "Players Coach" is not really protecting his guys here.  Woody has lost us a few games.  Get me a new coach and PG and we are good.

That Amare clip is priceless.

Lowry is an upgrade, but he's not a great defender. He's not a great player. I'd bring him in just because we have no chance to win 35 games with the pg's we have now. Since we have no draft pick it would be a nightmare to miss the playoffs.

That's why NY is not going anywhere. Conspiracy, C. Smith is part of his brother contract. If anybody think NY will turn it around, keep drinking.

Yup me too. Pass first PG is exactly what our team needs. His D leaves a lot to be desired but maybe he could learn from Pablo, Tyson and Metta.

Agree about Bargnani and JR but not Shump. Telling him that would only make him play worse. It's not like he's taking a tin of shots.

@po_diddleyUntil they get away from Iso Melo and standing around then they should get an F on offense.

solar_lion

@BiggieSmallsThe only thing I can agree with is that Woody should not be canned untill end of season. The only reason to can him now is if someone better is available and willing to take the reigns. That can't really happen until the all star break because any new coach needs practice time with the team. Also the way the team goes back to iso Melo and switching and players don't move/cut, screen, play smarter, is a reflection of the coach. If you can't maximize what the players do well and minimize those weaknesses then, that's all I need to see to decide whether Woody deserves to stay. He doesn't.

@BiggieSmalls

Why do other teams have assistants that are head coaches in waiting and highly sought after, while we have guys that are so bad, it's insurance that the coach won't get fired?

@BiggieSmalls I'm fairly positive you've poopoo-ed on #2 and #3 when those excuses were made for D'antoni.

Speaking of #3 and D'antoni. He's coached his Laker team to a better record than the Knicks with a far inferior roster, key injuries, and a tougher schedule.

Blaze NYK
Blaze NYK

@BiggieSmalls Agreed.  Like everyone I've been despondent about this team especially during the 9 game losing streak but if you can't see the improvement in the last few weeks you aren't watching or you don't care to look.  We've played better since The Brooklyn game and yes there have still been some mistakes and bad moments but we've also had new injuries to deal with.  The team is slowly figuring things out.  Hey, if we collapse then by all means, Woodson should go at the end of the season.  But him and the team deserve the chance to figure it out, which I feel like they are doing.  Positives from the last few weeks.

1.  Chandler is back.  2.  Hardaway Jr is turning into a great draft pick.  3.  Amare has proven he is still capable of contributing and IS TAKING CHARGES!   4.  Melo is showing that he is not going to give up.  5.  Bargnani has shown he is capable  6.  JR has played better the last 3 games.  6.  Beno had a good game as a starter.

Now we just need to chill it with the shump rumors and get Felton, Prigs, Kmart and Amare back and we'll get this thing going.  Seriously, at some point you gotta stop complaining and just enjoy this for what it is.  We got a win last night on the road without our starting and backup PG and two of our big men out.

@BiggieSmalls Is that the same Stephen A smith you bash relentless for bashing our Knicks?

You should start the Excuse Network and make tons of money!

You can charge anything for it and when people complains, you can say it's not your fault.

@lindro88Agree.  With the east as it is, missing the playoffs would be a complete joke.  I think he would be a huge help.  This team has all the scoring options in the world, but no one to control the game -- see the Jason Kidd.  Also our PG defense is absurdly poor.

@BiggieSmalls @barnaby87 SAS is TOTALLY WRONG. Woodson has not one single quality of a competent coach--not one. He has brought this team to it's knees with his consistently bad decisions. He should be giving part of his salary to Kidd, Rasheed and Camby. He is a slow thinker, a horrible communicator and has the ballz of a flea.

You guys who take up for this hack are desperate.
