League may fine J.R. for untying shoes

Update (6:53 pm): According to league sources, J.R. Smith will receive a fine, not a suspension (Berman).

The NBA may fine J.R. Smith for untying Shawn Marion’s shoe during their game on Sunday.

“A source said no player has ever been disciplined for such a bizarre transgression,” the New York Post reported.

A decision is expected on Tuesday.

Harris Decker

This was the first thing that I thought of when I saw it happen. With such blatant video evidence, how could the NBA not suspend J.R.? He clearly untied Marion’s shoe and it wasn’t a joke. Marion had no idea what was happening and luckily wasn’t injured on the ensuing play.

Smith has proved time and time again that he is a disaster when it comes to anything other than shooting a basketball. Maybe he thinks that untying someones shoe laces can make up for a boneheaded shot against the Rockets? Seriously, how dumb can you be? Sports are covered in high definition, by dozens of cameras (Playoff games use about 20) and everything from missing a shot to picking your nose is caught on camera. How were we not going to see Smith untying Marion’s shoes?

Either way, Smith should be suspended and there’s no doubt about it. Hopefully he comes back charged up but in the meantime, this should allow Tim Hardaway Jr. to see more minutes.

The link to Berman's tweet actually says JR received a warning from the league and was not even fined.

If they don't, they will after they see the video from tonight's game of JR trying the same dang thing on Greg Monroe.  I kid you not.

Good ole JR, constantly pushing the envelope of stupidity

Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

You have to keep adding to his great list of accolades.

The Jr smith Saga continues.

How about you focus on your game and start balling instead of playing with Sean Marions shoe laces on the court like a child. He has no right to be behaving the way he does with his anemic performances this year.

Never in my lifetime of watching sports have I seen a player more coddled and praised for mediocre play and sports character then JR Smith. This guy shoots 6-18 and Woodsons says Jr is starting to pick it up lol what a joke. He has no handle, turns the ball over plays terrible on ball defense,  ooo but he can hit a few flashy fade always hahahahah  -  maybe we get lucky and he actually makes a few that count this season, eventually he will hit one and he will be praised for it when he does lol

Mike Woodsons treatment of JR is just laughable.

What has this guy done in his entire career in the NBA other then the 6th man award to merit superstar treatment ? oh yea absolutely nothing.

I don't think an internal suspension would be extreme. We are talking about JR Smith, to get to this guy you have to be extreme.

Hmmm! I'm sure JR didn't mean to do it...his fingers probably got stuck when he was stretching...besides, I'm sure Harris and Woody (JR's top apologists) will find some way to blame Beno Udrih for the incident.

On one hand, one would think that the NBA and Stern had better things to worry about then this ridiculous, and MINOR incident. But when one is a multiple offender, even the minor things will get you in trouble, which is what's happening to J.R. I guess someone has to since it seems Woodson seems determined to not hold J.R. accountable.

How about Mike Woodson steps in and suspends and fines JR for AT LEAST a game check or two? This guy is a freaking joker and has been SOOOO bad since elbowing J Terry. I mean, the coke rumors, the going out with Rihanna during playoffs, the twitter crap, the boneheaded shots, the untying of a players shoes? When is it enough. How about our HC steps up and makes a statement! Hold this joker accountable!

"Smith has proved time and time again that he is a disaster when it comes to anything involving basketball unless he's in a walk year."

Harris Decker is clueless. He is everything that's wrong with the published stories on this blog. How you suspend someone for pulling the laces of another player on a free-throw attempt? A fine, sure, but to suspend someone for that is a joke. I don't see the NBA suspending people for flagrant fouls which could cause a more dangerous injury to a player.

JR has a low bball IQ and has been terrible this season. I think THjr should play more and take his minutes, but to say suspend him for that. C'mon man.

I wish he got suspended lol but I disagree that he should have.  At worst that's a delay of game or maybe technical foul if the refs saw that.  Otherwise there is nothing to be fined for.  As the source said, it would be bizarre to punish somebody for that kind of bizarre thing.

DIDNT D-WADE THROW BIBBYS SNEAKER INTO THE CROWD, TO THE DELIGHT OF THE ANNOUNCERS AND EVERYBODY IN ATTENDANCE??  VERY BIAS IF JR GETS FINED, WHILE D-WADE WAS THOUGHT OF AS THE "JOYFUL JOKESTER"

This was done in the playoffs not even reg. season...stupid if the NBA fines him.

So trully pathetic. Teams are making moves to get better while we are still resorting to mindnumbing stories like "The good, the bad and the Clyde" and "JR facing discipline for untying shoe"...

Please, stop blaming JR for this. It is not his fault. If his mother didn't teach him to untie shoes, this never would have happened.

On 1/1/15 trade Smith and get rid of him.  Who would take him?  Only the Knicks would give this bum a four year contract.

OT:

Charles Smith playing ball in N. Korea?

Smith, who played for the New York Knicks, said the North Korea trip has been dwarfed by politics and Rodman's frequent boasts about his close friendship with Kim.

"What we are doing is positive, but it is getting dwarfed by the other circumstances around it," Smith told The Associated Press. "Apparently our message is not being conveyed properly due to the circumstances that are much bigger than us, and I think that has to do with politics and government."

Maybe he can dunk the ball now and not get rejected 8 times....

If the didn't after the debacle in Houston, what would make you think Woodson would make a "statement" to JR at any point. He continues to get consistent minutes regardless how he plays.

@rkj473 Everybody can save some time and energy typing "bball" and just write JR has a low IQ

@ds2488 Eactly. We've seen far worse and mroe dangerous thins gone unpunished in a basketball court.

@MeloStat301 A few things:

1:  DWade should have been fined.  That he wasn't doesn't make JR's antics okay.

2:  There is a legit point to be made about injury.  Even if its a minor chance, JR could have injured another player on the court by doing something entirely unrelated to basketball.

I don't care if they fine him or not, nor if they suspend him or not.  All I see here is yet another example of JR's horrendous maturity and insanely low basketball IQ.  He's lazy and a dumb player and the only time he ever puts in effort to play at his peak is when a payday is in the offing.

@MeloStat301 I used to work in the same building as Smith. He ran some kind of media company.  I saw him in the elevator now and then.  I made the decision not to ask him why he didn't dunk the ball.  It wasn't easy.

ds2488
ds2488

@BiggieSmalls You're seeing the risk right now.  JR *can* outplay that contract I agree but smart money is he won't based on his career performance.  The risk is he's one of the worst players in the NBA (which he undoubtedly has been so far this year) and just glad to get longterm money from the only team stupid enough to give it to him.

I'll be very glad if he outplays his contract and opts out, but chances are very minimal.
