Raymond Felton speaks, says he’s not a ‘distraction’

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

One day after being arraigned on weapons charges in Manhattan Criminal Court, Raymond Felton addressed the media and said he wasn’t a “distraction” to the Knicks.

“I want to start off by saying thank you to my teammates, thank you to the fans, to my family, to my friends, everybody for their support in this situation,” Felton, who did not take questions, told a large group of media at the Knicks’ training facility.

“This is not a distraction to this team. I’m focusing on finishing out this season, finishing out these games with my teammates. And, um, going down to Miami, focusing on this next game at task versus the defending champs. As far as speaking on what’s going on off the court with me, there will be no comment. Speaking on that. If you’ve got any questions, anything dealing with that, speak with my lawyer. But other than that, I’m here to concentrate on this team, finish this season out with the New York Knicks. And see what happens, man. Trying to make it to the playoffs. We’re 5 1/2 games out, 25 games left so I’m really focusing on that with these guys, with the team and trying to make that happen.”

As first reported Tuesday evening by SNY and The Knicks Blog, Felton was arraigned on two counts of weapons possession because he allegedly had 18 rounds of ammunition loaded inside an FNH model 5.7 X 28 millimeter caliber semiautomatic pistol in his Manhattan apartment. He was freed on $25,000 bail.

The attorney for his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Ariane Raymondo-Felton, turned it into police after alleging that Felton used the gun to “intimidate” her during domestic disputes, according to a report in the New York Post.

Felton was fortunate that he was not charged with menacing his wife, a Class C felony that mandates a minimum of 3 1/2 years in prison with a maximum of 15.

“Class D and E felonies, in contrast, each carry a minimum of one year behind bars, but a judge has discretion to impose a lesser sentence,” explained legal expert Michael McCann in an SI.com piece. “The net result is that Felton may be able to avoid jail time, especially if his attorneys can work out a plea deal.”

Felton will continue to play with the Knicks until his next court date, set for June. 2. Head coach Mike Woodson said Felton would play Thursday in Miami.

Knicks star Carmelo Anthony was not at practice Wednesday because of “personal reasons,” but Tyson Chandler said he hasn’t discussed the situation with Felton because “I don’t feel that’s any of my business.”

“My concern is him as an individual, teammate, friend, brother,” Chandler said. “And then is he ready to go out and play basketball and go out and fight with us.”

Like Felton, Chandler insisted the situation — fodder for the back pages of the tabloids — wasn’t a distraction for a team that is 21-36 and 5 1/2 games back of the No. 8 seed in the East.

“Honestly, it wasn’t much of a distraction in there [on the court],” Chandler said. “When you come in here and it’s all this media and all this attention, then yeah that can be a distraction.

“But once you’re between those lines and we’re in kind of our safe haven, there’s no distractions, it’s just basketball.”

I guess if I want to get even with my wife I can just buy an illegal gun and have a lawyer give it to the police, and say it's my wife's. It used to be that someone had to witness a crime or at least get hurt.  Why isn't Mrs Felton in Jail?

I can't even watch these guys play anymore. I've picked up hobbies this season.lol

Thanks Knicks!

Silver lining?

With every media outlet, sports talk TV & radio calling the Knicks a "laughingstock" in the NBA...can it be that Dolan will  finally get the message?

As a lifelong Jets fan, it wasn't until the media went all in on Jets as circus that Woody Johnson finally pulled the plug and hired an  independent serious GM (Idzik) to run the organization.

Until we get a GM that knows basketball and is allowed to run the Knicks, nothing will change.

Sure, Woodson is a bad coach, but it is the front office and owner  that doesn't have a clue.

We can only hope !

They should let him off - the way he's shooting baskets this year, he can't hit ANYTHING!

"I'm about baskets, not bullets." Raymond Felton. It looks like he's more about brunch buffet than baskets OR bullets...

Of course this is a distraction to the team.

To say otherwise is ridiculous.

Not only you're losing, but you're playing awful ball, you're terribly coached, and with every day that passes you're even more frustrated and, deep down, most know that the season is lost. They've given up, and you can tell merely by the piss poor effort they put on the floor every day and the negligent body language displayed ngihtly

.

Then there's this.

When everything's going like sh!t, the Knicks have proven that it's qutie easy to make matters worse.

Felton may be dumb, but he's not stupid enough to say that his antics are a huge nuisance to what's left of an awful season that was lost long ago. His play is undeserving of a starter's role, and now his attitude off the floor corroborates that.

When things get crazy like this you think it becomes a distraction but it could become the thing Ray needed to jolt him.   The whole season he was dealing with this agitated little girl.  Who couldnt see the big picture.  Maybe she should have slowed the F down and took hald the classes she was already taking.  If Ray wasnt paying she could have had him pay the rest of her tuition.

He would have done it during the good times.

With less classes she could have come to more games.  Or been more romantic.

Yes guys love sex with many women thats just how it goes.  But we want even more to have that one that gives us that love and attention.

If you are not some selfish B who wants to talk and talk and talk and have people just listen to you and not listen to him then your relationship will erode.

and when it blows up the man gets blamed.

Dudes dont seek out thier wives for drama.

i beleive 80 percent of the time the drama comers from the chick.

Ive had a few chicks that couldnt stand one second of listening about me moan and groan about my boss at work.

but they would babble all day about thier broken nail type stuff.

I dont like this women which is why ive been on this campaign of posting what i think.

you can think what you think.  and you can go ahead and post it.

im not at work home with the flu so i got time for this and its fun.

Heres what i think happened.

she drove the gun in secretly from his legal stash in Carolina.

to F him over in the divorce proceedings.

Her divorce lawyer whose looking for big payday chose his words very carefilly when Aryanne told hiim Felton had a gun.

He too is looking for pay dirt like a very public divorce.

he gets more business this way.

Go Ray Felton you bring em down baby lets make the playoffs.

Wow seems like Ray has had a lot going on for a while now. He probably could have even used a week off to get his mind right and I wouldn't have blamed Ray.  If only he didn't have to play 35 minutes a night and had a backup point to help him run the offense since this is an off year for him. Oh wait Beno was just bought out. Funny how supportive Woody is for Ray through thick and thin but Beno says one thing, after being thrown under the bus, and he is in the doghouse forever.

The Knicks deserve the situation they are in.

Marvel

Not only is he a "distraction" but he's a poor PG and horrid defender.

I fully expect dolan, woodson, etc ti botch the situation.

if it were just the gun, Felton could play dumb and pretend he wasn't aware of NY  law..... but he waved it in a chicks face.

send him home with pay, and create distance, while supporting him publicly.

and again sign Jimmer. if I'm Dolan, we are almost officially cooked, Jimmers defense is as bad as Feltons but the positive spin would be immeasurable. plus jimmer is a NY kid who can shoot the lights out.

 smh it's quite simple.

Lets go Ray.  We know these chicks out here dont care about our mental well being at work.. good riddance.

youll get past the charges man dont worry.  Your lady probably drove the gun in from your collection in North Carolina.. have her and her lawyer arrested that would be SWWWWEEEETTT!!

Fabolous Outs Felton:

Running off of what Knickstape posted....Fabolos aint right if this is true...

The “Can’t Deny It” rapper hinted that Felton, 29, was playing the field behind Raymondo-Felton’s back, in his song, “Cuffin Season” with lyrics about promiscuous women he implied Felton had to end relationships with.

“4 Celtics, Knicks guard, you know Felton,” he sang. “This n—- in Atlanta AirTran her, no Delta. Been naughty all year trying to end it nicely, Summer hoes turning into winter wifeys.”

Raymondo-Felton, 26 — a Cornell graduate and Fordham law student — filed for a divorce on Feb. 18 almost two months after Fabolous’ song was released at the end of December 2013. She has not publicly accused her estranged husband of infidelity.

Why isn't his wife in jail. she had possession of an illegal firearm with no proof it wasn't hers

Maybe Fabolous was the distraction from 'cuffin season'

"Now I'm a take her in like a ho shelter
When there's a few n***** that I know killed her

This n***** in Atlanta air tran her, no delta

Sorry for the language but this def played a part in Ray from Latta's wife bugging out.  Plus she is in talks to join #basketballwives...make sense now?

@sir_manolo  According to the CBA, the league has to wait on the legal process. The knicks can't sit/suspend him for this. Players Association would be all over their azz.

@VerySilentJay  And why isn't Felton's wife in Jail then?  she was the only person so far proven to be in possession of an illegal firearm. I guess being a woman means special treatment.

Felton said exactly what Dolan told him to say. He knows who signs his paycheck and what is expected on the media front.

He wife is a Cornell graduate, which is an Ivy League school. You obviously aren't dating in that category.

VerySilentJay

@Joseph Suazo  The best jolt he could've gotten would've been a nice bench seat for a prolongued period of time and maybe, maybe, just once, have the "coach" known for "holding players accountable" actually proving it (that myth disappeared this season, of course).

@OLDKNICK Don't blame him for not speaking out. Every word about the case can be used against him at this point. These are Knicks basketball interviews and that's all that should be discussed.

It was registered to Felton in another state. She is a law student and obviously knows far more about the process than you or me.

@Knicks_Fanatic @VerySilentJay its not hard to go on a run even with a team with bad chemistry.  we know this team is flawed but not from a skills standpoint.  its from a chemistry, mental and organizational standpoint.  which is why Dirk and company were able to put the screws on in the last second and keep the knicks from scoring the last shot and making it while running down the clock.

the knicks can make the playoffs remember the run sprewell and company made.

but they will not get out of the first round.

@Knicks_Fanatic @Joseph Suazo  Ivy league people run the banks you moron.  And why isn't Felton's wife in Jail then?  she was the only person so far proven to be in possession of an illegal firearm.

Exactly, what's the point in making the playoffs when they won't even make it past the first round...

@Knicks_Fanatic @Joseph Suazo  The law is the law.  Felton's wife was proven to be in the possession of an illegal firearm with a lawyer as a witness, Newsflash genius..Having a v^gina or an ivy league degree doesn't change the law.

Your wife must own you.
