Report: Anthony doing homework on Chicago

Carmelo AnthonyCarmelo Anthony is doing research on the city of Chicago as he prepares a final decision to opt out of his contract according to a report on ESPN New York (Begley, June 22).

Citing league sources, Begley writes that Anthony has talked to at least one high-profile person who lives in Chicago to see how it is like to be famous in the city.

The Chicago Sun Times reported that Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau is also making a push to bring Anthony into the fold (Cowley, June 21).

Anthony has to opt out of the final year of his contract on Monday, June 23.

Is it possible that Melo is hoping that we will attempt to clear cap space in order to make a run at a player like LeBron? It would be difficult, but not impossible considering the fact that Chandler, Bargnani, and Amar'e only have one year left. It would probably also mean giving up the few assets we have, in an attempt to tempt teams to take on our bad contracts. It would be risky for sure. But I don't believe that Jackson wants to slowly build a roster. The East is very weak right now.

In regards to the prior Melo to Chicago thread, in the trade scenario why wouldn't we receive both of the Bulls first round picks? That would make the trade at least a little more reasonable from the Knicks' standpoint. Did the Bulls trade away their first rounder last year or have already traded next year's?

@WojYahooNBA: As planned, Carmelo Anthony will file notice with Knicks on Monday that he's opted-out of 2014-'15 season on contract, source tells Yahoo.

My position with Melo and this years free agency is simple. If he stays he gets my support. If he stays at a reasonable rate for the franchise, even better and that would silence many who think otherwise.

If he leaves, and the Knicks and him can work out a way to get him his extension and the Knicks several draft picks - Sandro's proposal w/ the Bulls sounds the best - 2 first, plus Mirotic, plus Butler and Believe Boozer - good. I won't root for Melo when he leaves.

If he leaves w/o working w/ NY to get them something back in return. F him. Hope he never wins a ring. And I will root for his shoulders to be chronically injured. I can't root for anyone who put the franchise in such a position to give up more and hurt other trade possibilities down the road, and then watch that punk run away. Nope F Melo.

That said, there is nothing I or anyone here can do about his decisions. So I won't lose sleep over it.

I wonder what many on this blog will say about Melo if and when he actually leaves. He spent the whole year alluding to the fact that he wants to explore his options, even before the season started. Unlike the Magic or the Twolves, Knicks fans remain convinced that a man that keeps talking about possibly leaving, will actually stay. I am not sure he could make things much clearer than he has. Unless the Knicks make some unbelievable move between now and July 1st, Melo is gone.

So now that's official, it could obviously mean he's gone, it could also mean that it's his only way to get his max from the Knicks, and it could also mean it's his only way of taking less from the Knicks as well.

@Sandro Guedes Hmmm ... Derrick Rose playing like the old Derrick Rose is how he got hurt. I like it. Hope that blows up on Melo when and if it happens. Hope Knicks brass gets what you proposed back should Melo leave.

@solar_lion  we would have had a better team had stat and chandler not wasted 30+ million. we would have amnestied stat had it not been wasted on billups so theres that

@D.Salahudin Sadly for me I'm inclined to think that you are right. If they don't get rid of those who Melo has probably told them in meetings that he does not want to play with anymore he will leave. : (((

@carl hill I think Melo wants to see what moves they can make to make it worthwhile for him to take less money.

@Sandro Guedes @HarthorneWingoStarr  they are not getting rid of butler unless they get shump or another perimeter defender. I would take that tho I haven't watch payton I would rather have the two picks then one btw

@theking @solar_lion Shoulda, coulda, woulda, managment f'd up all over the place. Started w/ overpaying in terms of length and duration for STAT and not amnestying him the moment they had a chance to do so.

@theking @solar_lion Chandler was great for us his first 2 seasons and his decline came late in the 54 W season.

Let's not place him alongside Amare because he disappoitned one season. That's a mistake.

There's a reason why Chandler is a trade asset while Amare's an albatross.

Amare has disappointed consistently, and he and Joe Johnson have the worst contracts in this league. At least one of those has stayed healthy, albeit on the decline as well.

@pezhao @D.Salahudin To bad patience is in such short supply. Apparantly with that logic I can see a troll like you bytching and moaning for the next couple of years as the Knicks absent Melo and rebuilding would be lottery bound for a couple of years. 2016 or some other pipe dream can't get to NY and it's stoic (EXTREME SACRCASM HERE) fans soon enough.

This blog gives me the impression that Knicks fans for the most part are a bunc of chicken heads with their necks cut off. Yeah I meant it the way I said it.

@knicksgirl35  And they just hired a rookie head coach, have no draft pick, and the biggest acquisition they may have to speak of by July 1st is Lamar Odom.... Not exactly inviting

theking
theking

@solar_lion @theking  well that's my point. you seem to blame melo for wanting to be here yea we traded pieces but what are those pieces doing? had we not made the deal we would have ended up with dwill trust me.

D.Salahudin
D.Salahudin

@solar_lion @pezhao @D.Salahudin  You speak as if the Knicks with Melo aren't in the lottery right now. I think the worst thing for a franchise to be is bad or mediocre with little chance of improving. I do not see the Knicks having a hard time bringing in free agents with or without Melo, as long as they have cap. Phil isn't Donnie Walsh.

theking
theking

@D.Salahudin @knicksgirl35  then you have the dead weight stat and bargs opting in ... I would leave to if you tell me take a paycut but stat and bargs are maxing out

Tikki
Tikki

@theking @D.Salahudin @knicksgirl35

Well, Carmelo is the one who suggested he's open to a paycut in the first place, isn't he?  I think he understands that the paycut potentially provides for some flexibility for 2015 and beyond - when the contracts of Bargnani and Amar'e are irrelevant.

The only way I could imagine Phil convincing those two to opt out would be if they were provided with longer-term deals with comparable total pay.  But I think neither Phil nor Carmelo are interested in having Bargnani and Amar'e here for the long term.

solar_lion
solar_lion

@theking @D.Salahudin @knicksgirl35 Let me use a little logic here. If you ask STAT or Bargs to take less, when the current contract their on is the last major pay day they'll have going forward. Would you do that? No! Also if you ask them to take less and perhaps resign and extension that suits their - individual - interest the team's cap space would be compromised beyond 2015. It is actually in the Knicks interest for them to both opt out -Bars and STAT. But short of them doing that, both coming of next years cap is better than asking them to take a pay cut- that will likely be returned with their request for an extension.

theking
theking

@Sandro Guedes @theking @HarthorneWingoStarr  what does trading butler do for them? its not a cap filler and they don't have to really give us anything so once again what do they get out of trading butler to us when they are adding picks cap relief and the foreign guy

theking
theking

@D.Salahudin @theking @solar_lion @pezhao  OK. 2010 struck out on LeBron ended up overpaying for STAT. teams can offer their player more money then we can so once again what do we have to offer a star free agent ?

D.Salahudin
D.Salahudin

@theking @D.Salahudin @solar_lion @pezhao  2010 was 2010, as I said Donnie Walsh is not Phil no one would mistake the two. Phil's cache is a lot closer to Riley's. If we keep Melo and pay him close to the max, who are we getting in 2015 that is going to make us so good anyway. Especially considering that Melo will most likely sign elsewhere unless the Knicks forgo their cap room for win now moves. Melo has stated he doesn't want to wait till 2015. If Melo was patient, I'd agree with you.

theking
theking

@D.Salahudin @theking @solar_lion @pezhao  there is no one in 2015 that will come and make a difference anyways. rondo will not come to a rebuilding situation when he can stay in boston and make the most money, gasol loves Memphis and love will resign with whoever he gets traded to so what else is there? 2015 is a pipe dream

D.Salahudin
D.Salahudin

@Sandro Guedes @D.Salahudin @knicksgirl35  that's even funnier. I am of the belief that the Knicks are better long-term if Melo leaves and they get assets for him too. Only because I know if he stays the Knicks will be forced to trade expirings for win now type players, and will give him close to the max. They will essentially be in the same predicament they are in now as Melo ages every year and his talent regresses.

theking

@Sandro Guedes @D.Salahudin @knicksgirl35

The Knicks without Anthony isn’t very appealing. Whenever a major star has asked out of a city the return is pennies on the dollar.  Teams do benefit with draft picks if they agree to a sign-and-trade, but the track record of quick rebuilds isn’t very good.

but blow it up and rebuild he said .... that's whats best for the team lmaooooooooooo

D.Salahudin
D.Salahudin

@theking @D.Salahudin @solar_lion @pezhao  So based on what you just said, what is the purpose of resigning Melo anyway. It seems like we will toil in mediocrity. No one will come to the team and we'll have the same nucleus of average dudes.

D.Salahudin
D.Salahudin

@theking @D.Salahudin @solar_lion @pezhao  I hear you. I get the feeling the decision will be made for us regardless. Melo will make his move and we will be subject to whatever that is. The Knicks have little control here and if they make a move to appease Melo before July 1st he may leave anyway.
