11:32 p.m.: Knicks president Phil Jackson, head coach Derek Fisher, and GM Steve Mills were slated to meet with Carmelo Anthony on Thursday night in a last-ditch effort to prevent Anthony from opting out of his contract (Berman, June 12).
June 12: Unless Carmelo Anthony has a “dramatic change of heart,” he will opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 (Isola, June 12).
Recent reports have indicated that the Heat are intent on going after Anthony in order to create a “Big Four.”
In that scenario, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh would all have to restructure their current contracts and take less money.
Carmelo Anthony has one year left on his current contract, and the Knicks have set a deadline of June 23 for him to either opt in or out of that final year (ESPN, June 11).
If he chooses to return to the Knicks, he will make $23.3 million and won’t become a free agent until 2015.
If Anthony opts out, he will become a free agent this summer.
