Report: Carmelo Anthony will become free agent barring change of heart

11:32 p.m.: Knicks president Phil Jackson, head coach Derek Fisher, and GM Steve Mills were slated to meet with Carmelo Anthony on Thursday night in a last-ditch effort to prevent Anthony from opting out of his contract (Berman, June 12).

June 12: Unless Carmelo Anthony has a “dramatic change of heart,” he will opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 (Isola, June 12).

Recent reports have indicated that the Heat are intent on going after Anthony in order to create a “Big Four.”

In that scenario, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh would all have to restructure their current contracts and take less money.

Carmelo Anthony has one year left on his current contract, and the Knicks have set a deadline of June 23 for him to either opt in or out of that final year (ESPN, June 11).

If he chooses to return to the Knicks, he will make $23.3 million and won’t become a free agent until 2015.

If Anthony opts out, he will become a free agent this summer.

It's a beautiful morning. The Heat are finished and I get to go to work and torture all of the Miami bandwagoners. "Not 1, not 2, not 3 not 4, not 5, not 6..."

If he leaves for any team not via a sign and trade, i'll be pissed considering he forced a trade 2.5 years ago and now that Phil's here, he's copping out.

Can someone please tell me when the upcoming "Could Heat finals loss all but guarantee Lebron to NY?" thread gets published on TKB?

So....lol....the narrative now AGAIN is....Lebron doesn't have enough help....well Lebron...welcome to Carmelo's 2013-2014 season...and many other seasons before that lol.

i REALLY want Melo to stay, but I'm braced for departure.

The least of my actual worries, is an unexperienced coach in Fisher. That's actually one of the promising prospects of recent. Wait, almost forgot you need a team to win.

Such a vicious cycle.

Save us Phil. LOL

Maybe Riley and LeBron are in this together just to get Wade and Bosh to opt out and then not resign either of them. That way LeBron and Melo can both get their money and play together. Bosh and Wade should be smart and opt in.

For what it's worth.. My friend lives in Miami. STAT was on the radio and the broadcaster asked him if he could see Melo going to play in Miami... Stat replied, "there's a 99.9% chance Melo stays in NYC"... Hopefully he's right, but I would understand if he did decide to leave, our roster is weak... I just hope if he does leave, he doesn't take his talents to South Beach..!!

"Last ditch effort to prevent him from opting out".

Durant was talking the other day about how captivating Fisher's motivational speeches can be.  If ever the Knicks needed such a speech, it would be tonight.

Don't see it happening though.

OMG ... holt crap . Nooooooo

Oh wait .... Isola / Fake-ola  / Crapola reported this ....

We will know from Phil on the 21 . Of that you can be sure  . He will say in a positive way saying all the right things and Melo will show who he is .

Remember ...... we traded this years pick , all those players for Melo and now he is going to bolt leaving NY dry ?? I sure hope that is not who he is .

Lebron , at least , left as a UFA from the team that drafted him. Gave them plenty of years to build a contender . ok, The Decision was lame but I think this would be worse from a PR stand point.

Great prez

Great coach

Bright future .....

At least give it a year man

Melo is the type of personality that would rather fight Lebron than join up with him.   Melo is one of the few players in the league who thinks he's on the same level as lebron and can outperform him on any given night.

Melo dont want to team up with Lebron he wants to beat him.

put a plan on the table to Carmelo tonight and write 5 years 100 mil on the bottom.

I Think Phil Jackson is G for giving him before July 1st to give us a word, Old Knicks Presidents would've waited it out and assumed we had the best chance of attaining him.

gives Phil some breathing room to make a drastic change come Draft night or to make a light splash.

lol Phil gonna fvck around and turn Timmy into Jobe (Jordan/Kobe) and secretly laugh at Melo for leaving

Melo has stated that he would opt out before the season even started. That is not news. He would be foolish not to do so and locking in a $100 million in a new, guaranteed contract.

KnickelusKnickleby

Melo can leave and cheat his way to a Title or he can earn it like a true Legend. Point Blank

now would i be salty if he left yes but either way if you have Phil Jackson at the helm and a whole new system you'd stick it out to see if it works as common courtesy

now he knows he wants to be "The Man" and with Knicks it's his Team

with Miami it's Lebron and DWade's

and Wade is probably starting his 3-4 year exit plan.

so if Melo leaves it just makes the Love/Durant possibility a little more hopeful and i guess thats all us Knicks fans have at the short end of the stick all the time.

@MeloStat301 I'm loving it! There's only a couple of A list players that will guarantee Leroid Championships and a fading Wade is not an option! He needs Mentally strong players like Melo to get the Job done!

Wade has 43 million dollars due him in player options over the next two years, and he's physically in decline. It's hard to imagine him "opting out" of his deal.

@Brian Webster  Championship teams are built on trust.  What you're describing would be an unprecedented hosing and highly unlikely IMO.

@Gee Daniels  Maybe the Melo story is causing dissension in the Heat locker room.  Once Wade and Bosh realized what LeBron is trying to do, and the money it will cost them, all hell broke loose. lol

41% go bankrupt? DAMN. NBA needs to make financial management a prerequisite before you can get drafted.

Why are you concealing who you are? Only sneaky low life's and those who are afraid of revealing themselves hide and don't reveal their true identity!

@KnickelusKnickleby Agreed.  Gives Phil a week to start figuring out if there are trades out there worth while or if he should take the risk and hope he re-signs.

knicksgirl35

@KnickelusKnickleby What if Melo goes there to play and Lebron gets injured (not wishing anything on him) and Wade's knees get worse? Melo and little Boshy would have the load. It's so risky. I would really hate Melo if he went to play for the Heat.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

Well...I would say Melo is never scared...which is different than mentally strong...and I'm a Melo fan. Melo isn't mentally weak...but I see him as having a bad temper...and when he gets annoyed instead of playing with anger u can see he gets annoyed w his teammates when they miss shots make bad passes ect...he has gotten better...and can improve on his mental toughness...but a guy like Melo would do wonders for Lebron..absolutely...but I hope he stays here in NY.

@Seth Nadler  like who? we wont have a star likely wont be any good so we would have to over pay for a player who would likely get more money from their own team

BiggieTKB

@Knicks_Fanatic Melo teaming up with Kobe would be Epic.   get some role players and I'll take two years of that.  then reset in 2016

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

@knicksgirl35 i feel you but it's the knicks, one thing i've learned in my few decades of being a fan

we're always in a position to be winners but then the rug gets swept from beneath us

we're always close but no cigar

i just hope Phil has the cigar in his back pocket at all times for us

i think he is gonna instill a winning culture but it may take someone unproven to be our breakout star and take the reigns

it could be THJR , or even Shump

hell it could be JR with real discipline but either way we need at least 3 all-stars to get to the ECF

@Mel Brown  when I think of it the 2015 class doesn't look so good besides melo bron rondo and Aldridge (who would likely stay in Portland) and m. gasol the others aren't really that impressive

Knicks_Fanatic

 @Knicks_Fanatic

The Knicks have a $90 million payroll and just made a rookie coach one of the highest paid in the league. There is no reason for Melo to be lowballed. He is a max player and should get paid. He is last player on the Knicks that should take less.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@MeloStat301  Lets see...Mia dallas Chicago Houston and nyk..all after him...not really a hard place to be.

He already said he doesn't mind taking less to play...I hope he takes less to play here.

@KnickelusKnickleby I agree with us needing 3 stars. Melo, Kobe and Rondo. My dream. lol

BiggieTKB

@Knicks_Fanatic just give him 5/100.  that's fair and respectful and we can build around taht with a 90 million dollar payroll.

@knicksgirl35. I'm kind of tired of getting good players at the end of their career, like LJ... Kobe's contract is ridiculous too

@knicksgirl35 @theking  if he was making 12 million less I would have no problem with it but 24 for a 35 year old is a lot
