Report: Thanasis Antetokounmpo to sign with Westchester Knicks

Keith Schlosser, Lead Writer

After acquiring two second-round draft picks in their offseason trade with the Dallas Mavericks, one would have assumed the Knicks would make selections that could impact the team’s future, especially as Phil Jackson aims to put his own stamp on the roster.

With that in mind, it was a bit surprising to see New York fail to sign Thanasis Antetokounmpo to a contract.

With the team’s roster already maxed out at 15 players, the young gun had an interesting decision to make. Should he venture out overseas for a more lucrative contract, or play in the D-League?

It appears as though Antetokounmpo has opted to remain stateside (RealGM, August 21st).

If the Knicks were to invite the swingman to training camp and ultimately decide to cut him later, there would only be a limited amount of time for the team to sign him before losing out on his draft rights once and after all. With no roster spots to be had at this point and time, such a move wouldn’t make much sense. He doesn’t appear to be in the most immediate of plans.

Instead, Antetokounmpo will sign a contract with the Westchester Knicks and go from there. This allows New York to retain his draft rights while monitoring his progress and ultimately deciding whether or not he should be considered a piece for the future.

Antetokounmpo played for the Delaware 87ers last season, but as per new NBA D-League rules, any minor league player is automatically assigned to the affiliate of the NBA squad that drafts him (aka holds his draft rights), should he choose to sign a D-League contract.

Thad Young is not going to get traded to the wolves now.  I wonder if Phil could put a package together for him...

Couple notes from the charity game at the Barclay's in Brooklyn:

Melo/Durant didn't play...game was decent pretty funny actually.

Melo sat on the bench the whole game.

Kyrie Irving sat next to Melo..who was sitting next to THJr...who was sitting next to JR Smith...who was sitting next to. Cleanthiny Early. Timmy and Early seem to get along great w/Melo.

THJR..was eatin cheeseburger sliders lol.

Terrerl owens really has game.

For all those looking for a move, on the 23rd trade restrictions come off Calderon, Dalembert and Larkin. They can then be dealt in a multi-player trade.

Off topic.

Price of the Knicks tickets are freaking sky high even after our terrible year. It's come to the point in which even nose-bleeds are a splurge.

@barnaby87  I wouldn't take him for nothing.  He makes 9M+ per, with a PO for 2015-2016 - i.e. he would eat up our cap space.

@OLDKNICK3 Some, will go on and on about the money

and certainly, that played a big role. Still, New York City is in Melo's heart and soul.

That's not joke. This is home and The New York Knicks is his team. Period.

Melo chose to stay, build and if he can, win it all here in New York.

I'm good with that. Really good with that!

Let's Go Knicks!

@Knicks_Fanatic I'm expecting another trade before the season. Phil does seem to keep quiet about his moves. We'll see what happens.

I'm pretty sure he smoked more than 50 blunts in a month, never mind a year

@SheSaidSpikeWho  Leader of what?  JR's focus should be on partying less.   Do that and he should be fine.

We need a good Robert Randolph trade rumor.  Has it been 30 days yet?

@SheSaidSpikeWho No one can ever question Amar'e work ethic when it comes to keeping in shape. Hopefully his knees can hold up for 60-70 games. Contract year...

@OLDKNICK3 @brookdon It really hurts the Garden vibe too.  My buddy and I went in on season tickets in the 200 section a few years back.  The year STAT signed with us in 2010.  That year was the best year for tickets bc The Knicks were finally (sort of) relevant again but they hadn't raised prices yet.  We actually snatched up a bunch of extra tickets in the 400s and then when Melo got traded we made BANK on stub hub.  But then they raised prices and raised them again.  The only way we were able to keep the tickets was by selling all of the major games on Stubhub to make profit and basically pay for the games we went to.  So even though we had season tickets we really only went to about 10 or so games a year, which was still awesome.

But now I don't know how regular people ever get to go to the games.  And when they redid the Garden our seats in the 200s were now 100 section seats.  They actually got a little better view wise.  But the crowd in that section SUCKS.  no one wears Knicks gear at all.  Its a bunch of frat boy finance types who look at you weird when you cheer like a fan.

Its sad.  The Garden looks so nice now and it definitely needed an upgrade, but I miss the old days.  Before we got season tickets, when the Knicks really sucked, we could get tickets, good tickets, on stub hub for cheap!  Even though they were bad people still cheered and went crazy.  One of my favorite games was against Denver when Melo still played for them.  The Knicks won the game in a great battle where it was Melo vs. Gallo and people were going nuts.  Even though we were out of the playoffs and had a losing record.

@knicksgirl35 @BigChiefTriangle same same US Open ground tennis is an amazing experience. Look out for the up and comers on the smaller courts, one day they'll be on Arthur Ashe. I got to see Azarenka when she was just starting out, it was cool

@knicksgirl35 @BiggieTKB Obama is in a tough spot with regards to this.  There are of course conspiracy right wing nuts who are saying this is all orchestrated by him.  If he comes out and defends black people, then he's a race hustler.  But if he doesn't, then he's not sticking up for his own people.  I feel so bad for the guy sometimes.  It honestly reminds me of Jackie Robinson and how he endured all those awful things to break the color barrier in baseball.  Hopefully the same thing will happen with Obama.  After he is done being president, maybe in 30 or 40 years after we've had another minority president, people will realize how good of a person he was.  I do think his presidency has been a huge disappointment and I think he definitely hasn't done a lot of what he promised he would try to do, but I do think once he got elected, the opposition and hatred he face is far greater than he could have realized would have been.  This is on top of the usual amount of BS in Washington that makes it hard for stuff to get done even when its a white dude as the president!

Exactly.. Phil is keeping everything close to the vest, yet people are asking why there's no reports of any trade brewing

Blaze NYK

@knicksgirl35 @Blaze NYK Oh yeah, I agree.  I mean at this point what does he have to lose?  He's not running for reelection anyways.  I think he is hoping, though, that at the mid terms the Democrats can pick up more seats and then he can close out the last 2 years of his presidency without as much opposition.

I think this is why he has been more conservative than a lot of people had hoped.  He all ready was being accused of being a communist, black panther terrorist, so he had to appear tough with the military.  He had to water down Obamacare, he had to not roll back all the Patriot Act stuff that he said he would do.  Cause if he had really tried to do all that stuff the right would have gone even more crazy than they have and he probably would have ended up getting impeached or worse.  Right wing nuts went crazy when Clinton was president too.  Thought he murdered people and all sorts of stupid conspiracies.  But its nothing like what Obama has faced.  The dude can't catch a break.  Its so bad that even when he does things that moderates and Republicans would normally support, Republicans still go crazy.  They didn't even give him props when they caught Bin Laden!

Hey, I hated Bush a lot.  But now that I see what BS Obama has gone through, I wish we as a country would just support the president no matter which party he is and just give that person a chance to lead the country.  We can't stop fighting and can't drop the election once its over and let them go to work.  There has always been fighting in Washington but it used to be that once the campaigns were over, the two parties would try to negotiate and work together and you'd only have opposition on stuff that they were super against.  It was called making concessions to try and get stuff done.  Now it doesn't matter at all.  Its all about making sure whichever party is in power isn't able to accomplish anything so that you can then take over at the next election.  We're screwed.
